There is no single fix for a YouTube 24/7 stream that stops after a few hours. Start by noting the exact stop time, then compare what your encoder reports with what appears in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the encoder’s errors and local output, CPU load, and outbound connection quality before changing settings or replacing the stream key. Those checks help distinguish an encoder problem from a network interruption or a YouTube ingest issue.
First, identify what actually stopped
At the next interruption, record the time and check both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s dashboard may report that the stream ended, or it may show that the incoming feed was lost. Those are different observations, and neither alone identifies the underlying cause.
- Save the encoder log and any visible error message. Keep your stream key private; do not include it in screenshots or logs you share publicly.
- Note whether the encoder is still running and producing audio and video locally.
- Check whether YouTube shows an encoder error or a change in stream status at the same time.
The encoder version, its logs, YouTube’s status, and the network path are needed to isolate a specific failure. Without them, the title alone cannot establish a cause.
Check the encoder, local output, and computer load
YouTube recommends using up-to-date encoder software, inspecting the live output, checking errors and CPU load, and reviewing the local recording or archive when diagnosing picture or sound problems. If the local output is already failing, focus on the source, encoder, or computer rather than assuming YouTube ended a healthy stream. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

- Update the encoder to its latest available version, then note the version you are using.
- While the stream runs, check the encoder’s status and logs for errors near the interruption time.
- Check CPU load and listen to or watch the local output or recording, if available. Look for freezes, missing audio, or other problems that also appear locally.
- If the local output is healthy but YouTube loses the feed, move on to connection testing and the dashboard status.
If you try a different encoder, capture the original errors first. A second encoder can help isolate a software-specific issue, but switching by itself does not prove the original encoder caused the stop.
Investigate dropped frames and connection quality
Dropped frames are a useful connection clue, not proof of a single fault. OBS explains that they can indicate an unstable connection to the remote streaming server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; if enough frames are dropped, the program may disconnect. Check OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

- Test outbound connectivity while the stream is running or near the time the problem occurs. A speed result from a different time may not reflect conditions under streaming load.
- Check the encoder’s dropped-frame or connection statistics and compare their timestamps with the failure.
- If the selected bitrate cannot be sustained or the connection is unstable, adjust the setup to fit the available connection and monitor whether the symptoms change.
- If connection testing identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection is a reasonable diagnostic change when wireless instability is plausible. It is not a universal fix: Ethernet will not resolve an ISP outage, routing or ingest problems, an encoder crash, or a power interruption.
Change the stream key only when the error calls for it
YouTube recommends refreshing a stream key for certain third-party encoder startup errors. That advice does not establish that changing the key fixes a stream that ran successfully for hours before stopping. Check the exact error first; do not rotate keys as a guess or expose the current key while troubleshooting.

Do not mistake YouTube’s archive behavior for a time limit
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That describes archiving, not a 12-hour streaming limit and not a cause of a stream stopping after a few hours. YouTube also states, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder”; this describes normal ending behavior, not the cause of an unexpected interruption. Match error messages to evidence
YouTube’s live-stream error guidance includes categories such as codec and keyframe configuration. These are worth investigating when the corresponding error appears, but their existence does not show that they caused a delayed stop. Use the message and timestamp in Live Control Room and the encoder log to decide which configuration, if any, needs attention.

Troubleshooting checklist by symptom
