You can’t turn a YouTube playlist’s Loop control into a livestream: it repeats playback for someone watching the playlist. To broadcast prerecorded videos continuously, play media you’re authorized to use through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder’s output to YouTube Live. Your computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection must remain available for a local setup. A cloud service is an alternative if you don’t want your own computer to run the broadcast.
Why a YouTube playlist does not itself create a livestream
The Loop control on a YouTube watch page repeats videos for the viewer. It does not transmit those videos as a live feed. A livestream requires a separate output from an encoder, configured with the stream URL and key for a YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains that workflow; the playlist’s watch-page playback controls are a different function.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
This local method uses OBS Studio to play authorized media and send its output to YouTube Live. It depends on your computer and connection staying available while you broadcast.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, but VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Create a scene and add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene and select the media files you have the rights to broadcast. The source accepts video and audio items.
- Set playback behavior. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback after the files finish. OBS documentation lists it as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; confirm the actual settings in your version. Choose shuffle only if you want playback order randomized.
- Prepare the scene. Add any graphics or titles you need, set audio levels, and check the scene and sound locally before going live.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can send an encoder feed to your stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps and stream settings guidance.
- Preview, start, and verify. Check the Live Control Room preview, start streaming from OBS, and verify the intended watch page. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of scheduled events, checking preview and access on the channel, watch page, and mobile, and monitoring audio and video quality. - Keep the local setup running. Leave the computer, OBS, playlist files, and internet connection available for as long as the local stream should run. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

The comparison describes the documented workflows, not a reliability test. YouTube lists Gyre as a tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams in its encoder documentation; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent reliability assessment. Check rights and YouTube policy before looping
Use content you are authorized to broadcast
YouTube requires creators to hold the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. Use only videos, audio, images, and other material your channel is authorized to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can lead to a placeholder, warning, temporary interruption, or termination if the material remains. A license may not prevent a Content ID interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its live-stream terms.
Playlist contents still have to follow Community Guidelines
YouTube says it may treat a playlist as if its videos were combined into one video when assessing whether the collection violates Community Guidelines. Check the playlists policy as well as the rules for each individual video.

Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Channel-level reused-content rules address material repurposed from YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not promise that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete item, so a 24/7 broadcast should not be assumed to produce a single uninterrupted replay. Decide how you need to handle replay and continuity before selecting stream duration; see YouTube’s encoder guidance.

During a broadcast, check picture and sound from the channel page, watch page, and a mobile device. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review options such as auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR in the stream settings.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video Source is missing in OBS: install VLC, then check the source list again; OBS requires VLC for the source to appear.
- The playlist stops at the end: open the VLC Video Source settings and verify Loop Playlist is enabled and that the media files are present.
- The stream does not appear in YouTube: confirm OBS uses the stream URL and key for the intended Live Control Room stream, then check the Live Control Room preview. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the live video: check for a third-party content match or warning in Live Control Room. Confirm your broadcast rights and, where a license is in place, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The local broadcast goes offline: check that the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection are still running. A local encoder cannot continue if one of those dependencies becomes unavailable.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: check the stream duration and archive expectations. YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours; its cited encoder help does not promise one complete archive for a longer stream.
