What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, a PC playing or encoding a YouTube stream uses more electricity than the same PC sitting awake and idle—but there is no reliable universal wattage or cost. Playback and encoding are different workloads, and the result depends on your computer, stream settings, display and peripherals. Measure the same setup at the wall to find the difference.
First, distinguish watching a stream from broadcasting one
If you are watching YouTube, the computer is decoding and displaying video. If you are broadcasting to YouTube from your PC, streaming software is also encoding and sending video. Those are different workloads and should be measured separately.
YouTube documents streaming by mobile device, webcam and encoder; its livestream dashboards track figures such as duration, concurrent viewers and watch time, not your computer’s watts or kilowatt-hours. YouTube’s streaming overview and live analytics guidance describe those stream and audience measures.
What “idle” means changes the answer
For a fair comparison, define idle as the computer awake with its usual background services running but not playing or encoding the stream. Keep the same monitor and peripherals connected and use them in both measurements if you want a whole-desk comparison. Measuring the PC alone answers a different question.

Sleep and power-off are separate states, not idle. An awake, unused desktop compared with a sleeping computer is not an apples-to-apples test. ENERGY STAR materials distinguish these operating states and explain that power-management settings affect consumption. ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance provides context for power management and measurement.
Why published streaming figures do not give your PC’s extra draw
The International Energy Agency gives a broad estimate of about 0.08 kWh per hour for video streaming, while noting that actual energy use depends on the device, network connection and resolution. That estimate is not specific to YouTube Live, and it does not tell you how much more a particular PC draws during playback than it does while awake and idle. The IEA’s streaming analysis explains the scope of that estimate.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
ENERGY STAR says a computer uses 11 times as much energy as a digital media player in its cited category comparison, and that certified products that enable streaming use 25% less energy on average. These comparisons cover product categories; they are not measurements of the same computer at idle and during a stream. ENERGY STAR also says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models through efficient components and better idle management. Its estimate that enabling power management on a certified desktop can save an office or home office $15 per year is a program estimate, not a guaranteed saving for every computer or electricity tariff. ENERGY STAR computer guidance gives these figures and their context.
System boundaries matter too. Google’s Display & Video 360 carbon-footprint report excludes data transmission, media production and end-user devices. Its documentation discusses allocating data-center machine energy between workload (“dynamic power”) and “idle power”; that is not the same as measuring a viewer’s PC at the wall. Google’s carbon-footprint report guidance describes the report boundary. As Google notes, “Energy usage of machines outside of the datacenter, although monitored, isn’t as comprehensive as machines within the data center.”

Measure the difference on your own computer
- Choose the boundary. Decide whether you want PC-only consumption or PC plus monitor and peripherals. Keep that equipment unchanged throughout the comparison.
- Record awake-idle power. Let your computer settle into its ordinary awake, unused state, then use a plug-in watt meter at the AC outlet to record a representative average. ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement material describes measurement at the AC source with an approved meter. See the ENERGY STAR computer test method.
- Record the stream state separately. For viewing, play the YouTube stream at the resolution and display configuration you normally use. For broadcasting, run the encoder with the settings and content you would actually use. Let each state run long enough to capture a representative average rather than relying on a brief moment.
- Compare average watts. Subtract the awake-idle average from the playback or encoding average. The result is the measured increase for that setup and boundary; it is not a universal figure for YouTube.
- Convert to energy for the time you care about. Use kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000. For a 24/7 scenario, multiply the measured average watts by 24 hours per day and the number of days, then divide by 1,000. To estimate cost, multiply the resulting kWh by your electricity rate.
If you want to compare sleep or power-off, measure those states separately. Do not label either one idle. Power-management settings can reduce consumption when a computer is not actively in use.
What to account for in a 24/7 setup
- Playback versus encoding: watching and broadcasting are not equivalent tasks. Measure the activity you mean.
- Resolution and display: playback resolution and display configuration can affect the setup’s draw. Keep them consistent when comparing runs.
- Peripherals: a monitor and accessories add to a whole-setup reading; exclude them only if your question is specifically about the PC.
- Equivalent duration: compare average watts under each state, then calculate kWh across the same number of hours or days.
- Audience metrics are not power readings: YouTube’s duration, viewer and watch-time analytics do not measure electricity use.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your question is about keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your home computer does not have to stay on for the stream to continue. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
