To run multiple always-on YouTube channels with OBS, configure each channel as a separate output with its own YouTube stream key, OBS Profile and Scene Collection, then run and monitor each output independently. For simultaneous streams, you also need enough computer and network capacity for the combined workload. On Windows, OBS Portable Mode can isolate separate configurations; on macOS and Linux, validate the installed version’s profile and launch behavior rather than assuming portable-mode isolation is available.

Plan the channel and stream setup

Start by deciding whether the channels must broadcast at the same time or whether you are switching between channel setups. Simultaneous, distinct feeds need independently configured outputs. Each output should have a clear mapping to its channel, broadcast, OBS Profile, Scene Collection and stream key.

  • Channel: the YouTube destination and its live-stream eligibility.
  • Broadcast: the scheduled or active event shown in that channel’s YouTube Studio Live Control Room.
  • Stream: the ingest resource and key OBS sends to YouTube.
  • OBS Profile: output and account settings, including streaming configuration.
  • Scene Collection: the scenes and sources used to produce the picture and sound.

These are separate configuration layers. OBS Project puts it plainly in its Profiles documentation: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” Give both the Profile and Scene Collection names that identify the channel or show, rather than relying on names such as “Profile 1.”

Check YouTube eligibility and create a broadcast for each channel

  1. In YouTube Studio, check each channel’s current live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to enable live streaming.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast in that channel’s Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the server URL and the stream key for that broadcast.
  3. Record which channel, broadcast and OBS instance each key belongs to. Keep the mapping somewhere private; do not put keys in public notes, screenshots or stream titles.
  4. In OBS, select the appropriate service/server and enter the key for that channel’s broadcast. Check the destination before starting the output.

A restriction on one channel is not a reason to send that channel’s content through another channel to evade it. YouTube describes attempts to get around a live-streaming restriction by streaming from another channel as circumvention.

Assign an OBS Profile and Scene Collection to each channel

In OBS, select the channel’s Profile for its streaming account, server and output/video settings, and select the matching Scene Collection for its scenes and sources. The Scene Collections documentation explains how collections organize scenes and sources separately from Profiles.

  • Name each Profile and Scene Collection with the channel or show identity.
  • Check media paths, audio devices, overlays and other sources in each collection; a scene can exist while a file or device it depends on is unavailable.
  • Before going live, confirm that the selected Profile contains the intended server and key and that the selected Scene Collection contains the intended feed.

Run concurrent OBS instances without mixing configurations

OBS documents launch parameters including --multi to suppress the multiple-instance warning, plus --profile and --collection to select configurations at launch. Its Launch Parameters guide also documents --portable. Launch parameters can help choose configurations, but verify the actual Profile, Scene Collection and destination in every running instance.

Windows: use Portable Mode when you need separate configurations

OBS’s Portable Mode guide documents portable configuration alongside the application and describes it as a way to run multiple instances without profile and scene-collection cross-contamination. The guide documents Portable Mode for Windows; it says the mode is not supported on macOS or Linux. Keep separate instances clearly labeled and confirm their settings after launch.

macOS and Linux: validate the installed setup

Do not assume Windows Portable Mode instructions apply. Use the documented launch/profile behavior as appropriate for your installed version, then open each instance and check its selected Profile, Scene Collection, server and key. A test broadcast is safer than trusting a launch command alone.

Configure output and test the full workload

OBS’s Overview Guide covers streaming, output and video settings. Set the service/server and stream key for the intended YouTube destination, then configure the output, resolution and frame rate to suit the content, computer and connection. There is no single safe CPU, GPU or upload-speed figure for every setup: scene complexity, encoder, resolution, frame rate and network conditions all affect capacity.

  • Test every channel output separately before scheduling it as always-on.
  • Then test all intended simultaneous outputs together for long enough to observe resource use and stream health.
  • OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30 fps and recommends checking that the system has enough resources.
  • OBS describes automatic reconnect as an available advanced setting. It can assist with some interruptions, but does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

YouTube’s ingest documentation identifies configuration issues including unsupported video or audio formats, keyframes sent too infrequently and insufficient video reaching YouTube. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and health indicators, along with OBS logs. An OBS status saying it is streaming does not by itself confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy picture and sound.

Understand YouTube’s stream and broadcast limits

YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at the same time. These are platform ceilings, not recommended operating targets, and can change. Check YouTube’s current guidance before relying on them.

Google’s broadcasts-and-streams guide explains that a channel needs its own stream resource. It says a stream can be reused for up to three broadcasts when those broadcasts do not overlap. For broadcasts on the same channel that may run simultaneously and need distinct settings, Google describes creating distinct stream resources. This API explanation clarifies the relationship between broadcasts and streams; it is not a step-by-step OBS interface guide.

Preflight each channel before going live

  1. Identify the channel and broadcast assigned to each OBS instance.
  2. Verify that the instance has the matching Profile, server and stream key.
  3. Verify that its Scene Collection contains the intended scenes, sources and available media.
  4. Check the broadcast’s visibility, title and schedule in the matching YouTube Studio Live Control Room.
  5. Start each output separately and confirm that the matching Live Control Room shows the correct preview.
  6. Start the simultaneous workload and monitor OBS resource use and YouTube ingest/health warnings.
  7. Decide how you will recover from a computer, network or power interruption. A UPS battery backup for a streaming PC and network gear may help with some power interruptions, but neither OBS nor YouTube specifies a model or promises a particular runtime.

Troubleshoot common multi-channel problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check or do
The wrong channel receives a feed A key, server or Profile is mapped to the wrong instance. Stop the affected output. Verify the channel’s Live Control Room broadcast, then check the instance’s selected Profile, service/server and key before restarting.
The picture or scenes are from another channel The wrong Scene Collection is selected, or a source points to unexpected media. Check the collection name and inspect its scenes, sources and media paths in the affected instance.
A second OBS instance will not launch cleanly The instance may be blocked by the multiple-instance warning or share configuration unexpectedly. Review OBS’s documented --multi, --profile and --collection launch parameters. On Windows, consider the documented Portable Mode workflow; do not assume it is supported on macOS or Linux.
YouTube reports ingest or health warnings Possible causes include unsupported video/audio, infrequent keyframes or insufficient incoming video. Use the Live Control Room health details and OBS logs to identify the warning, then check the relevant output settings and connection.
One or more streams become unstable under load The combined workload may exceed tested computer or network capacity. Test the intended simultaneous configuration, inspect resource use and logs, and reduce workload or adjust settings before depending on continuous operation. No universal hardware threshold applies.
A stream cannot start despite the correct OBS settings The channel may not be eligible, or an active-stream limit may have been reached. Check the channel’s current eligibility and active streams in YouTube Studio, including both the per-channel and per-key limits.
