The key connects your encoder’s outgoing feed to YouTube—it does not choose which video plays. In OBS, you can use a VLC Video source to play a media playlist. A switch may not be gap-free, so check the picture and audio in the previews and test your exact setup before relying on it.
Switch the playlist in OBS and keep the existing key
- Check the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and note the stream destination and configured key. Keep the key private: it provides connection information for sending your encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Prepare the media source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and put the media files you want to play in its playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source offers playlist loop and shuffle controls. OBS: Media Sources.
- Keep the YouTube connection configured. Leave the same YouTube stream and key in OBS. Use the VLC source’s playback controls to change the playing item or playlist. OBS describes scenes and sources as the elements that make up the output sent to a stream, so the media source controls the content while the encoder sends the output. OBS: Scenes and Sources.
- Verify the switch. Check the image and sound in OBS and, when available, the Live Control Room preview. Test your actual files, audio routing, source behavior, encoder settings, and network before relying on an uninterrupted transition. The documented workflows do not guarantee that every change will be seamless.
Why you do not need a new stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” You create a key in YouTube and enter it in your encoder so YouTube can accept the feed. The key is connection information, not a playlist selector; changing what the encoder plays does not by itself require changing the key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
YouTube also lets you reuse stream settings when creating a new stream, copying the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and key. That is a separate workflow from changing media during an existing encoder output.
When to reset or replace the key
A playlist change alone is not a documented reason to reset your key. YouTube documents resetting it when you need a new key, such as when the current one may have been compromised. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it. In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Stream, locate Stream key, and select Reset. Then copy the replacement key into the encoder. Resetting changes the connection credential; it does not fix a media-source or playlist issue. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

If you are setting up a new encoder connection
- In Live Control Room, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings.
- Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- When the preview is ready, click Go live in YouTube. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
YouTube documents RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP option for compatible encoders. If you choose it, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and pair it with the key for the correct stream. RTMPS concerns transport security, not playlist selection. YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder.
Common problems and what to check
- The new video does not appear: Confirm the intended VLC source is active and the media item is playing. Check the OBS preview before investigating the YouTube key.
- There is no audio or the wrong audio: Check the selected media, OBS audio routing, and meters or monitoring during a test. Audio behavior can depend on the source and configuration.
- The picture or sound pauses during a change: Test the media format and source reload behavior, then check encoder settings and network stability. The official documentation does not prescribe one transition method that guarantees no interruption.
- YouTube loses the feed or reports an ingest error: Troubleshoot the encoder connection separately, including the configured destination and connection settings. Do not reset the key solely because you changed the playlist.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Reopen or check OBS after installation.
