No—not if the stream is being encoded and sent by software on that PC. When the computer sleeps, its encoder cannot keep sending the video to YouTube. To keep a prerecorded nature ambience stream running with your PC off, move the stream to a cloud service; otherwise, keep the computer running and monitor the connection.
Why sleep stops a PC-originated YouTube stream
For an encoder-based YouTube livestream, the encoder sends the video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. If that encoder is running on your PC, the PC is part of the stream source. Putting it to sleep stops that computer-originated feed; a sleep setting cannot make the encoder continue working.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe starting the encoder to go live and stopping it when ending the stream. YouTube also supports webcam and mobile workflows, but those do not change the answer for a stream whose source and encoder are on the sleeping PC.
Ways to keep the ambience stream running
Keep the PC awake
If your video loop and encoder run on your computer, the straightforward option is to keep the computer awake, the encoder running, and the internet connection available. This keeps the source active but means your local equipment and network must remain operating. Test the setup and monitor stream health rather than assuming a long unattended stream will be uninterrupted.

Move the prerecorded video to a cloud service
If the nature video is prerecorded and you want your PC off, a cloud service can play and send it independently of the computer at home. YouTube’s encoder documentation names Gyre as an example of a cloud-based service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That reference does not establish a provider’s current plans, supported platforms, uptime or support terms, so check those details directly before choosing a service.

Use a standalone hardware encoder only with an independent source
YouTube recognizes hardware encoders as an encoder option, but that does not mean one can keep reading a video from a sleeping PC. A hardware encoder must have access to the video source independently—such as from its own compatible input or storage. It is still powered streaming equipment, not a way to make the sleeping computer keep supplying video.
Set up and check a stream that stays on your PC
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general live-streaming guide also says users must be at least 16. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before setup because platform rules can change.
- Connect the encoder. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the stream and use its stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Choose sustainable video settings. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your target resolution and frame rate. The appropriate bitrate depends on those choices; test that your encoder and upload connection can sustain the selected settings.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total outgoing stream bitrate by 20%. Other devices and users on a shared network can consume bandwidth, and disruptions can break the feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before leaving it running. Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview, and monitor audio, video, and stream health. Confirm that the ambience audio is present and at an appropriate level, and that the picture has no unintended black frames or interruptions. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and checking stream health.
- Prevent sleep for the planned run. Set the PC not to sleep while the stream is running, and make sure the encoder and video loop remain active. If either stops or the network drops, the PC-originated stream can stop; check it periodically and have a recovery plan.
Keep archives and viewer controls separate from stream uptime
YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream; it does not keep an encoder feed alive. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Separately, its encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan around those behaviors if viewers need replay or you need an archive, but neither solves a sleeping-PC interruption.

Common problems and what to check
- The stream ends when the PC sleeps: that is expected for an encoder running on the computer. Keep the PC awake or move the prerecorded video to a cloud service.
- The stream buffers or loses health: check the actual available upload bandwidth, competing network use, and whether your total stream bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test again after changing encoder settings or network conditions.
- The preview has no video or audio: verify the encoder is sending the intended source and that the correct stream URL and key are configured. Check the preview before relying on the stream.
- The encoder cannot connect: confirm the selected stream’s URL and key, and ensure the key has not been mistyped or replaced. If it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The stream works but the archive or rewind does not meet expectations: review YouTube’s separate archive and DVR behavior, especially for streams over 12 hours; these functions do not extend the live feed.
