To run two YouTube livestreams at once with different playlists, create two separate live events and send each one its own video feed. A practical software setup is OBS Studio with a separate VLC Video source and playlist for each feed, connected to the matching YouTube event URL and stream key. YouTube documents limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; both limits apply at the same time.
How two simultaneous YouTube streams work
A YouTube live event is the broadcast viewers watch; a stream is the incoming encoder feed and its settings. To show different playlists at the same time, you need two genuinely different incoming feeds and two separate events. Sending one incoming feed to two broadcasts duplicates its content rather than creating two playlists. Google’s API guide describes separate liveStream resources for simultaneous broadcasts with different content and settings: YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts.
YouTube’s current documented active-stream limits are 10 per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform limits, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can encode and upload that many feeds at a chosen quality. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Check channel and equipment readiness
- Your channel must be verified, live streaming enabled, and free of a current restriction that blocks livestreaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube says users must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s live streaming eligibility requirements.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; it can load a media playlist and loop it. See the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
- Make sure your computer can decode both playlists, encode two outputs, and upload them concurrently. Two feeds demand more processing and outgoing bandwidth than one. The amount required depends on output settings and hardware, so test with the intended configuration rather than assuming your usual single-stream capacity is sufficient.
Set up the two YouTube events and OBS playlists
- Create two events. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and create or schedule two distinct live events. Set each event’s title, visibility, and other details. Ensure each has an appropriate, distinct stream configuration for its feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Get started with live streaming.
- Prepare the first playlist in OBS. Add a VLC Video source to the scene for event one. Load the first event’s media files into its playlist and enable looping if it should repeat. Choose shuffle only if you want the order randomized.
- Prepare the second playlist separately. Add another VLC Video source to a separate scene or an independent output workflow, load the second playlist, and set its loop or shuffle behavior independently. Check that the files and order are the ones intended for event two.
- Map outputs to the right events. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for each event in YouTube Studio into the encoder output that carries its matching playlist. Keep a clear event-to-output mapping; do not send both playlists to the same event or reuse a key where separate configurations are needed.
- Validate each output before going live. Start the outputs and inspect each event’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the right video, audio, playlist order, and destination independently. Use unlisted visibility for a test if appropriate. YouTube recommends testing and checking preview, accessibility, and audio/video quality before a broadcast.
- Monitor the run. Watch both event health indicators and your computer and network capacity. OBS may need separate instances, an output plug-in, or another encoder arrangement for multiple outputs, depending on the installation and chosen output method. Verify the specific arrangement with a private or unlisted test before relying on it.
Choose an encoder approach
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder | You need independent scenes or file playlists and your computer has enough capacity. | Flexible, but the machine must decode, encode, and upload both feeds. OBS’s VLC Video source supports media playlists. |
| Hardware encoder | You already use video production equipment or need a dedicated encoder workflow. | YouTube lists standalone hardware encoders as an option. Confirm the chosen model and workflow can produce two independent feeds. |
| Cloud encoding | Local hardware is constrained or remote operation is important. | YouTube describes cloud encoding as sending a feed to a service that distributes it; setup and a subscription may be required. Confirm the service supports two distinct playlist sources, not merely mirroring one feed. |
Compare the options by whether they can produce two different feeds, supported output quality and bitrate, available computer or service capacity, upload bandwidth, operating complexity, and cost. YouTube notes that local encoding requires processing capacity and that cloud services may involve subscriptions.

Keep this separate from Live Redirect
Live Redirect sends viewers to a Premiere or another livestream after a stream ends; it does not run two playlists simultaneously. YouTube says creators sending redirects need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. See YouTube Help: Live Redirect.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list. The source requires VLC to be installed.
- Both events show the same playlist: Check whether both outputs are using the same source or whether one incoming feed was bound to both broadcasts. Assign a separate playlist feed to each event.
- An event receives no video: Verify that the output’s server URL and stream key match that event in YouTube Studio, then inspect its Live Control Room preview.
- One or both feeds stutter or fail: Reduce the load or test lower output settings, and check whether the computer can encode both feeds and the connection can upload them simultaneously. Capacity depends on the selected settings and hardware; a successful single-feed test does not establish two-feed capacity.
- You cannot start livestreaming: Check verification, live-stream enablement, account restrictions, and first-time activation time. YouTube says enabling a channel for the first time can take up to 24 hours.
- You reach a stream limit: Check both documented limits: 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Ending unused active streams may free capacity.
Protect the channel and the playlists
Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights needed to use every video and audio track in both playlists. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to livestreams as well as uploaded videos; a stream can be interrupted or restricted if it contains material you are not authorized to use. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. Also consider whether a long, repetitive playlist adds original value for viewers: complying with copyright rules does not itself guarantee eligibility for monetization, which is assessed under YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
