There is no single bitrate that suits every Indian broadband connection. For a practical starting point, use 1080p30 H.264 at 14 Mbps only if the encoder can sustain about 17.5 Mbps of available upload under typical network load. That planning figure leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. If that margin is unreliable, step down to 720p30 H.264 at 8 Mbps, which calls for about 10 Mbps of available upload by the same calculation.

These are YouTube live-ingestion targets and planning examples, not guarantees for any Indian broadband plan. Measure upload where the encoder runs, with normal household or office use in progress; a plan’s advertised speed or one brief speed-test peak does not establish that a connection can carry a stream continuously.

YouTube live bitrate targets by quality and codec

YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These figures are for sending a live stream to YouTube; they are not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers.

Live format AV1 or H.265 target H.264 target
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. Choose a codec only if the encoder, playback workflow, and YouTube ingestion path all support it reliably. For many setups, H.264 is the straightforward choice; AV1 or H.265 can use a lower recommended target at the listed formats, but compatibility matters more than selecting a codec on paper. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

How much upload speed to plan for

YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. A simple planning calculation is stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. The results below apply that advice to YouTube’s targets; YouTube does not publish these calculated figures as a separate India-specific threshold.

Target stream Bitrate Approximate available upload to plan for
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 17.5 Mbps
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps 12.5 Mbps
720p30 AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps 7.5 Mbps

These margins are a starting point, not a promise of 24/7 stability. Other devices’ uploads, cloud backups, video calls, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, jitter, and ISP congestion can all reduce or destabilize the bandwidth available to the encoder. YouTube also notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed, so the relevant figure is stable outbound upload at the streaming location—not the download speed highlighted in a broadband plan. Choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain

If upload is stable enough for 1080p30

Use 1080p30 at 14 Mbps with H.264 if realistic tests show roughly 17.5 Mbps or more remains available for the stream after normal network use. With AV1 or H.265, YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendation is 10 Mbps; the corresponding headroom calculation is about 12.5 Mbps. Do not select 1080p60 or 4K just because a speed test briefly reports a high peak: continuous streaming needs sustained capacity and a stable connection.

If upload fluctuates or falls short

Lower the stream target rather than betting on the best speed-test result. H.264 at 720p30 is 8 Mbps, with about 10 Mbps of available upload as a planning margin; AV1 or H.265 at 720p30 is 6 Mbps, with about 7.5 Mbps by the same calculation. A lower setting that stays healthy is preferable to a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.

If the broadband plan advertises 100 Mbps

The plan label alone cannot answer whether a particular stream will be stable. Check the connection’s outbound upload at the encoder’s location and under normal concurrent use. If that measurement is erratic, reserve more room or lower the target; no India-wide ISP tier in the cited YouTube guidance guarantees a particular live bitrate.

Preflight a 24/7 stream before relying on it

  1. Measure at the streaming location. Test outbound upload at different times and while the network is carrying its usual household or office traffic. Prefer a wired connection where practical. A wired link can avoid local Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot fix insufficient upstream service or ISP congestion.
  2. Select the target from YouTube’s live table. Match codec, resolution, and frame rate, then compare the target against sustained upload with headroom—not against a single peak.
  3. Configure the encoder. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 and recommends RTMPS.
  4. Run a realistic private or unlisted test. Use representative audio and motion, then inspect the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring health feedback during a stream.
  5. Re-test after changes. Repeat the preflight if you change the encoder, network equipment, ISP service, codec, resolution, or frame rate.
  6. Write down a recovery procedure. Decide how you will detect a dropped stream and restore it, and test that process. The cited guidance does not establish an India-specific uptime guarantee or a universal power-backup specification for 24/7 streaming.

Why a bitrate alone cannot guarantee 24/7 uptime

Bitrate determines how much data the encoder attempts to send; it does not protect a stream from a power cut, an ISP outage, a failed device, or a dropped YouTube connection. A 24/7 operation needs a way to monitor stream health and a tested response when the stream stops. The right bitrate is therefore the highest target that the actual connection can sustain with a safety margin—not the highest setting the encoder offers.
