How the two revenue sources work
Ads earn from ad delivery
On a monetized live stream with monetization enabled, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-roll ads can be placed automatically or manually. An ad slot may not serve an ad; viewers without an ad continue watching. YouTube’s systems determine which slots receive ads. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance describes the available controls and delivery limits.
Super Chat earns from viewer purchases
Super Chat lets a viewer pay to make a message stand out in live chat. Super Stickers are paid animated stickers. Unlike ad revenue, these features depend on eligible viewers deciding to make a purchase. YouTube says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools, and payments may be treated differently under applicable laws. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies cover eligibility and policy conditions.
What the revenue shares do—and do not—tell you
YouTube’s partner earnings overview states that the Commerce Product Module pays creators 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. It states that the Watch Page Monetization Module pays creators 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on their content Watch Page. Check the modules and terms that apply to your account; these published shares concern different revenue arrangements and do not show which feature will produce more money for your channel. How to compare earnings for your own 24/7 stream
- Choose a matching time window. Compare the same dates or number of days for both sources, and account for changes to the stream schedule or audience that make periods unlike one another.
- Find live ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter to break out ad revenue for live streams and replays. YouTube says Analytics separates estimated ad revenue from estimated revenue across all revenue types; identify the Super Chat revenue for the same window as a separate source.
- Compare attributed revenue, not a proxy. Put the estimated live ad revenue beside Super Chat revenue for the matching period. Overall channel income and RPM are not direct ad-versus-Super-Chat measures.
- Interpret the difference in context. Consider ad-enabled views, monetized playbacks, ad delivery, viewer geography and Premium status for ads; for Super Chat, consider whether your eligible audience buys paid messages or stickers.
CPM is what advertisers pay before YouTube’s share, not your take-home revenue. RPM represents earnings per 1,000 video views and can combine ads, Premium, memberships and Super Chat, so neither multiplying views by CPM nor comparing overall RPM with Super Chat isolates the two sources. Which one is more likely to lead?
Ads may bring in more when many viewers receive monetized playbacks. Super Chat may lead when the stream has a highly engaged community with viewers willing and able to pay. Those are explanations of how each source works, not a universal ranking: YouTube’s official guidance does not provide an across-channel earnings comparison for 24/7 streams or a reliable dollar forecast for an individual channel.

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. The comparison averaged 207 countries in January 2024. It concerns automatic mid-roll ads versus not enabling them—not ads versus Super Chat—and is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Ad settings and viewer experience
Automatic mid-rolls
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and offers low, medium and high frequency settings. YouTube says its automatic system temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats or Stickers, and snoozes them for everyone during high-engagement moments. Ads are not necessarily shown to every viewer at the same time, and no setting guarantees that an ad will serve.

Scheduled and manual breaks
Scheduled breaks can be set at 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30-minute intervals; you can also insert mid-rolls manually. YouTube says earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual settings than with automatic mode. Choose a balance that suits the viewing experience as well as monetization; frequent interruptions can affect a long-running stream’s audience.
Optional control hardware
YouTube notes that creators can insert ads using Elgato’s Stream Deck after downloading the YouTube plugin. This is an optional control method, not a requirement for monetization and not evidence of higher earnings.

Eligibility and availability can change the result
- Ads: The channel must be monetized and monetization enabled for the live stream. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
- Super Chat and Super Stickers: YouTube’s minimum fan-funding requirements include membership in the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available. Individual features can have additional criteria.
- Revenue terms: Check which YouTube monetization modules and agreements apply to your channel rather than assuming a published percentage predicts your net earnings.
