To reduce the data used by a 24/7 YouTube Live playlist, lower the live encoder’s bitrate—usually by choosing a lower resolution or frame rate that still looks acceptable for your content. Then test the real upload connection, leave bandwidth headroom and check the stream’s health. The bitrate setting controls the stream’s data rate; an Ethernet cable can improve connection stability but does not reduce the amount transmitted.
YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations apply here. Its separate upload-encoding recommendations are for finished video files, not a continuous live feed.
Choose a live setting that fits your playlist
Start with the image quality viewers need, rather than automatically selecting the highest resolution or frame rate. A mostly static devotional image, for example, may not need the same setting as fast-moving footage with fine detail. The acceptable result depends on the source and should be checked in a test stream.
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 recommendations:

The resolutions and bitrates are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingest examples, not guaranteed picture-quality outcomes or requirements to stream at those settings. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the exact combination and codec you use; the page also lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingest options.
Set the encoder for a steady stream
- Choose resolution and frame rate. In your encoder’s output settings, select the lowest combination that gives your playlist an acceptable picture.
- Set the bitrate for that combination. Use YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance as a starting point. Lower bitrate generally means less data transferred, but too little can make detail look poor or cause visible compression.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR for live streaming.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends the encrypted transport option where supported by your encoder and ingest setup.
These are live encoder settings—not settings for shrinking a video file before uploading it to YouTube. The latter use a separate set of recommendations.

Check upload capacity before running 24/7
The stream must fit within your actual outbound bandwidth. YouTube Help’s Streaming tips says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. If you send primary and backup feeds, include both in the total. Other people or devices sharing your connection can also reduce the capacity available to the streaming machine.
- Run an upload speed test on the same connection and, if possible, the same computer or device you will use for streaming. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate.
- Compare the measured upload capacity with the total outgoing stream bitrate. Leave roughly 20% unused rather than running at the connection’s limit.
- Repeat the test at the times you expect to stream. A single result may not represent a shared or congested connection throughout the day.
- For a fixed computer-based setup, consider Ethernet if you can connect the computer and router by cable. YouTube recommends a wired connection for a fixed streaming rig; wiring can help stability, but it does not lower the selected bitrate or data use.
India does not have a separate YouTube live bitrate setting in the guidance cited here. Your usable upload speed, data allowance, plan cost and congestion depend on your ISP, plan and location, so check your own connection rather than assuming a particular provider will support a continuous feed.

Estimate how much data a 24/7 stream uses
Bitrate is a transfer rate: the data adds up for every second the stream runs. The daily figures in the table are arithmetic estimates using decimal units: bitrate in megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8. They are not YouTube-published monthly usage figures. Actual transfer can vary with audio, protocol overhead, bitrate behavior and any backup feed; multiply a daily estimate by your planned operating days to estimate a month.
YouTube Help’s Filming tips – Live gives “about 10 MB of data per 1 minute” as a rule of thumb for mobile live streaming. Treat that as mobile guidance, not a precise monthly estimate for an encoder-based 24/7 broadcast.

Test before committing to a continuous stream
- In YouTube Studio, set up a test broadcast and choose an unlisted visibility setting if you do not want the test to be public.
- Start the encoder with the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings.
- Check both the picture and sound, and read YouTube’s stream-health messages for upload or encoding problems.
- Let the test run long enough to reveal instability, then adjust bitrate or connection setup if needed.
- During the actual stream, keep monitoring stream health rather than assuming a successful start means the connection will remain stable.
YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips recommend testing before going live and monitoring the stream. Its live streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; check the current requirements in YouTube Studio before scheduling a broadcast.
Fix common upload and stream problems
- Stream health reports insufficient upload bandwidth: Lower the encoder bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. Also check for competing traffic on the connection and whether a backup feed is using bandwidth.
- The image looks too soft or blocky: Raise the bitrate if the upload connection has headroom, or test a different resolution and frame-rate combination. Judge the result using the actual playlist, since motion and detail affect how a setting looks.
- The stream starts but becomes unstable later: Recheck upload performance during the problem period and account for shared-network use. Keep the 20% bandwidth allowance rather than setting the stream at the measured maximum.
- You are considering a cable to reduce data use: Ethernet may help connection stability in a fixed setup, but it will not reduce the configured bitrate or transferred data. Change encoder output settings to reduce the stream’s data rate.
- You are changing the original video’s file size: That is a different task from reducing live-stream data. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings cover finished video uploads, not the bitrate of a live encoder feed.
