To stream several prerecorded videos in sequence on YouTube with OBS, install VLC, add a VLC Video source to an OBS scene, and load your files into its playlist. Leave Shuffle off to preserve the order; turn Loop on if the playlist should repeat. Then connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, test the feed, and start the broadcast.
Before you set up the playlist
- Confirm YouTube Live access. YouTube’s live-stream overview says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Creators must be at least 16. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned stream. YouTube’s live-streaming overview
- Install OBS and VLC. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source encoder software. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. OBS media sources documentation · YouTube live encoder guidance
- Prepare files you have permission to stream. Prerecorded content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and copyright enforcement during live broadcasts. A matching copyrighted broadcast or a strike can trigger restrictions. YouTube live-streaming restrictions
- Check your upload capacity. The connection must sustain the full outgoing bitrate; YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Test from the same connection and location you will use for the broadcast. YouTube live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance
Build and configure the playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the broadcast. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and matches the OBS architecture.
- Name the source, then add the video files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. The VLC Video source is the documented OBS source for playlists; the built-in Media Source is intended for an individual file.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order. OBS documentation says the VLC source defaults to shuffle off and loop on. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled if playback should start again at the end; turn it off for a one-pass event.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene throughout the playlist, or deliberately change its behavior if your scene layout requires it.
- Preview the scene and check that the video fits the canvas, the audio is audible, and each file advances as expected. If the source is hidden behind another source or the scene changes, it may not behave as intended.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and find its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube or the available custom streaming service option, then enter the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Labels can vary by OBS build.
- Treat the stream key as a password: it directs your encoder feed to your YouTube stream, so do not share it or show it in a screen recording. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion when available. YouTube encoder setup
- Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public or directing viewers to it. Use YouTube’s available visibility and scheduling controls for the event.
Preflight the broadcast
Run a test with representative sections of the playlist before the real event. Confirm both picture and sound in YouTube’s preview, not just in OBS. Check that the playlist advances in the right order, that the ending either stops or loops as intended, and that the watch page works on the devices your audience is likely to use.
- Make sure available upload bandwidth exceeds OBS’s total outgoing bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video during the broadcast. A playlist that plays locally does not prove the upload or YouTube ingest is stable.
- Keep the computer, OBS, network connection, and VLC source running for the full stream. A local OBS broadcast depends on that setup remaining available.
- Use only content you are authorized to broadcast, including music, footage, and any material embedded in the videos.
Single video or playlist? Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play one prerecorded file | Media Source | Designed for an individual media file. |
| Play several files in sequence, with optional repetition | VLC Video | Provides a playlist; keep Shuffle off for sequence order and set Loop Playlist to match the event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
