To turn on live mid-roll ads, open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, open the stream’s Edit > Monetization settings, switch Monetization on, then choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. You need a monetized channel; enabling ads creates opportunities for ads, but does not guarantee that an ad will appear for every viewer or at every break.
Enable monetization and mid-rolls for a live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and click Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or select a scheduled stream under Manage.
- At the top of the stream setup, click Edit, then Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- Choose a mid-roll mode: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual, and save or apply the setting if prompted.
These controls are for monetized channels. To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams viewed on the Watch Page, YouTube says the channel must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. See YouTube’s monetization settings guidance.
Choose the right mid-roll mode

YouTube’s earnings-potential comparison is platform guidance, not a forecast for an individual channel. Pick automatic when you want YouTube to manage timing; scheduled when set intervals suit the program; and manual when you need direct control over each break and can operate Live Control Room during the stream. Delay automatic ads during an important moment
When automatic mid-rolls are enabled, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to postpone mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. This delay does not suppress manual ad breaks: breaks you insert yourself still display while Delay ads is on. The delay control is useful for an announcement, a close contest, or another moment you do not want interrupted, but it is not a blanket pause for manually placed ads.

Insert a manual ad break
Manual ad placement is available from a computer in Live Control Room. During the stream, use the ad insertion control when you reach a suitable break. An optional Elgato Stream Deck can provide a physical control for inserting ads, but it is not required; the documented setup and manual workflow use YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. What viewers see—and what ad settings cannot promise
Turning monetization on or creating an ad slot does not mean every slot will serve an ad, or that every viewer will see one. YouTube’s systems decide whether to serve an ad. Viewers who are not served one continue watching the stream; viewers who do see an ad rejoin the live stream when it ends or when they skip it. YouTube Help puts it this way: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Our ad systems decide which ad slots may get an ad based on a number of factors to best balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.”

YouTube says automatic mode includes measures intended to limit disruption to channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. These are platform behaviors, not a guarantee that interruptions will be eliminated. If the live player is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads will be turned off for that stream.
Set defaults for future live streams
Monetized channels without rights management can configure channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s help guidance says monetization defaults to On with the recommended Automatic Medium option, and that creators can change the setting. Channels with rights management do not currently have channel-level settings. Check the setting on the individual stream if your channel does not have the defaults option or if you want a different choice for a particular broadcast. See YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.

What YouTube’s published earnings figure means
YouTube reported an over-20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024. It was an average comparison between channels that turned on live automatic mid-rolls and channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. It is a platform-reported group comparison—not a promised result or an estimate of what a specific channel will earn.
Troubleshoot missing or unexpected mid-rolls
- The Monetization section is unavailable or ads cannot be enabled: confirm the channel is monetized and that the required Watch Page Monetization Module has been accepted for Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue.
- No mid-roll appeared in Manual mode: manual mode requires you to insert the break while live from a computer in Live Control Room. Without an insertion, no manual mid-roll is served.
- A break did not show an ad to a viewer: this can be normal. Ad slots are opportunities, and YouTube decides whether to serve an ad to each viewer.
- Ads are absent on an autoplay embed: YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream when its player is embedded on an external site with autoplay.
- A manual ad appeared while Delay ads was enabled: this is expected; Delay ads postpones automatic mid-rolls, but manually inserted breaks still display.
