Those symptoms point to different causes. Check OBS’s performance and dropped-frame indicators before changing settings; a freeze alone does not identify the cause.
Identify what is freezing
Reproduce the problem and check the same moment in OBS, a local recording, and the YouTube stream. Note OBS’s performance indicators and dropped-frame count. Also note how the video enters OBS—such as a browser source, a captured browser window, or another input—plus your operating system and selected encoder. The right source-specific fix cannot be determined without those details.

If OBS preview or recording is freezing
Rendering a scene and encoding its output both consume system resources. A complex scene, demanding sources or filters, high output resolution, and high frame rate can add load. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Simplify the scene for a test. Disable or remove nonessential sources and filters, then check whether preview and recording improve.
- Reduce output workload. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, then reproduce the same loop. Fewer pixels or frames can reduce the work OBS must do.
- On Windows, test administrator mode if GPU overload is indicated. OBS recommends running as administrator as a troubleshooting step for GPU overload. Compare the result rather than assuming this is the cause.
- On Windows, test HAGS only when relevant. If performance problems or hardware-encoder failures suggest a scheduling issue, OBS’s HAGS guide recommends disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling and rebooting. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
OBS’s System Requirements page provides general requirements, but the information available here does not establish a suitable hardware upgrade for your particular setup. Diagnose the bottleneck before buying a GPU or replacing the computer.

If OBS is dropping frames while streaming
Rising dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and the remote stream server, not necessarily to local rendering. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely” that OBS Studio itself causes connection-related dropped frames; that statement applies to this network symptom, not every kind of freeze.
- Check whether the connection can sustain the bitrate you selected, including during the hours you stream.
- For a stability test, use a wired connection if possible; OBS recommends wired networking for streaming stability.
- Investigate Wi-Fi reliability, network drivers, relevant network hardware, and network-optimizing software.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection, changing one factor at a time.
- OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce dropped frames when a connection cannot keep up, but it may lower stream quality and does not fix the underlying network problem.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide to work through the network branch. A stream that freezes only at the viewer end needs a different diagnosis.

If viewers see buffering but OBS does not drop frames
When OBS reports no dropped frames, viewer buffering may still result from differences in viewers’ internet connections or from a stream bitrate or quality that some viewers cannot sustain. Compare reports from multiple viewers and check whether the problem affects a particular device or connection. OBS discusses viewer-side buffering in its buffering guide.
When to change encoders or hardware
Consider an encoder change only after the evidence points to encoding workload. OBS documents hardware encoding as a way to move encoding work off the CPU, but available encoders depend on the computer, operating system, and compatible hardware. Its Hardware Encoding guide covers NVENC, AMF, QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox with those qualifications. A hardware encoder is not proof that you need to buy hardware, and an upgrade will not necessarily solve network drops or viewer buffering.
