A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To make OBS recordings smaller without reducing your YouTube stream quality, change the local recording settings separately from the live stream settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, choose Advanced output mode, and configure the Recording tab independently. Lowering recording quality, bitrate, resolution, or frame rate reduces file size; lowering the streaming bitrate affects the live broadcast instead.
India does not have one special OBS bitrate. Choose live settings for your resolution and frame rate, then check that your actual upload connection can sustain them. The steps below cover both goals: smaller local files and a stable YouTube stream.
First, separate recording size from live-stream quality
OBS can use one set of settings for the live stream and a different set for the recording. In Settings → Output, Simple mode offers recording quality presets. For more control, change Output Mode to Advanced and use the Recording tab to select the recording encoder and quality independently of the Streaming tab. The exact encoder choices depend on your operating system, hardware, and drivers. See the OBS recording guide and OBS Studio overview.
If OBS is set to record Same as stream, the recording follows the stream’s encoded output. An independent recording configuration can produce a smaller file while preserving the live stream settings, but OBS notes that recording with settings other than “Same as stream” may use additional computer resources. Test while doing a representative stream before relying on the setup.

Reduce the recording file size in OBS
Start with recording quality
- Open Settings → Output.
- If using Simple output mode, select a recording quality below Indistinguishable or Lossless. OBS describes High Quality as a medium-file-size option.
- To keep live output settings separate, set Output Mode to Advanced, then configure recording quality or bitrate in the Recording tab.
- Record a short sample of the kind of content you normally make. Check fine text, motion, and dark or detailed scenes before committing to a long recording.
Lower recording bitrate generally means a smaller file, but also gives the encoder less data to preserve detail. A single bitrate cannot be recommended for every recording: the result depends on scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and encoder. OBS’s recording encoder presets guide gives an approximate example of about 7 GB per minute for its Lossless preset and warns that this mode uses the CPU encoder. That is a guide-specific approximate figure, not a typical target for compact recordings.
Lower recording resolution or frame rate if needed
If bitrate or quality adjustments are not enough, reduce the recording output resolution—for example, from 1080p to 720p—or reduce frame rate when the content does not need the same motion smoothness. Keep the aspect ratio correct and inspect a test clip for legibility and detail. Lower resolution removes image detail; lower frame rate makes motion less smooth. These changes need not affect the stream if you configure recording separately.

Pick a recording encoder with compatibility in mind
OBS presents AV1, HEVC, and H.264 as a general preference order for quality and file size in high-quality local recording, but it is not a universal instruction to switch codecs. AV1 may have weaker support in editing software; HEVC has compatibility and licensing considerations; H.264 is widely compatible. Real-time software encoding can demand a high-end CPU. Hardware encoders shift work to GPU hardware, although older hardware generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Confirm your editor and playback devices can handle the chosen codec before using it for important recordings. See OBS’s audio and video formats guide and hardware encoding guide.
Set YouTube streaming bitrate for your connection
Live bitrate affects the data OBS sends to YouTube, not the size of an independently configured recording. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists these figures by resolution and frame rate; use the values for your selected ingest codec, since the table gives different ranges for AV1 and H.265.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a compulsory setting for every Indian connection. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with keyframes not exceeding 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before a broadcast because its guidance can change.
Measure upload capacity, not download speed
Run a speed test under typical household network use and pay attention to upload. YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed, so a fast download result does not establish that a live stream will be stable. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its streaming tips explain the connection considerations.

OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when troubleshooting stream bitrate. Treat that as a diagnostic starting point, not a guaranteed formula: other network use and connection variation can reduce what is available to OBS. If frames are dropping, lower the live bitrate and test again. A wired connection may help; OBS also suggests trying a different server if connection trouble persists. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Use a recording container that can survive interruptions
OBS recommends recording to MKV because an unfinished recording can remain recoverable if OBS or the system stops unexpectedly. If your editor or workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing feature after recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding: it is for recovery and compatibility, not meaningful compression. Container choice by itself does not make the video smaller. Details are in the OBS recording guide and OBS formats guide.

Troubleshoot common size and stream problems
- The recording is still too large: Lower recording quality or bitrate first. If needed, reduce recording resolution or frame rate, then review a test clip for acceptable detail and motion.
- The YouTube stream becomes unstable after a change: Check the live stream bitrate separately from recording settings. Measure upload speed, reduce the live bitrate if frames are dropping, and retest under normal household network use.
- The computer struggles when recording and streaming: An independent recording encoder may add workload. Test the intended combination; consider a hardware encoder if available, while checking its quality and compatibility tradeoffs.
- An MP4 recording is damaged after a crash or power loss: Record to MKV for recovery, then remux to MP4 after a successful recording if your workflow requires it.
- The new codec will not edit or play reliably: Return to a codec supported by your editor and playback devices; H.264 is widely compatible.
Keep copyright and channel eligibility in view
Smaller files and a stable encoder do not grant permission to use the content. Only stream and record material you have the rights to use, including music, footage, and other people’s work. Review YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization policies for your channel and content; repeated or reused material can raise separate policy issues that bitrate settings cannot resolve.
