For one local study video, use OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For a rotating playlist of multiple local videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC first, and enable Loop Playlist. Neither choice by itself keeps a 24/7 broadcast online: OBS still streams from your computer over your internet connection, so playback looping is not stream recovery or an uptime guarantee.

These features and defaults are from the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. Check your installed OBS and VLC versions because interface labels or behavior may change.
Set up one looping video with OBS Media Source
- In OBS, choose the scene where the study video should appear. Under Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select OK. In the source properties, select the local file you want to play.
- Enable Loop if the file should start again when it finishes. OBS documents this option as Off by default.
- Confirm the video and audio appear as intended in the preview, then select OK. Start the YouTube stream using your normal OBS streaming setup.
OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. A listed format does not guarantee every file will work on every system; compatibility can depend on encoding and installed components. See the OBS format and source documentation.
Set up a playlist with OBS VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC; OBS specifies matching 64-bit architecture.
- In OBS, select the target scene. Under Sources, choose +, then VLC Video. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add your local files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list after it finishes. It is On by default in the documented settings.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a fixed sequence. Its documented default is Off.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If you switch scenes, choose the behavior that matches whether playback should stop, pause/resume or continue while hidden.
- Check the preview and audio, then start your YouTube broadcast. OBS lists network caching at 400 ms by default; its documentation does not give a general recommendation to change that setting.
OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support and notes that it allows a playlist, unlike Media Source. Do not assume a particular codec or file will work solely because it is on your playlist; test the exact files and system before relying on them live. See OBS Media Sources.

What looping does—and does not—do for 24/7 uptime
Looping controls playback after a file or playlist ends. It does not keep OBS open, restore an internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube will continue receiving the stream. OBS connects from your computer directly to YouTube or another destination; OBS notes that network instability or inadequate capacity can cause dropped frames. A 24/7 DIY setup therefore depends on a computer and connection that remain available, as well as attention to OBS and YouTube operation. The OBS Help Portal does not promise 24/7 uptime for a looping source.
A VLC playlist also does not automatically end the YouTube stream when the playlist finishes, according to a community reply in the OBS forum discussion. Treat that as community guidance, not a current official feature guarantee. Likewise, a 2023 forum user reported inconsistent results when editing a VLC playlist during a broadcast; the discussion does not establish supported live-update behavior. Test playlist changes in your exact OBS/VLC setup before depending on them (OBS forum thread).
YouTube transport settings are a separate layer
Media Source and VLC Video determine what OBS plays locally; they do not choose the protocol OBS uses to send the broadcast to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup guide describes HLS as an ingestion option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP and lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. The guide specifies 1–4 second segment duration, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. It also says HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than one continuous stream like RTMP. Those are HLS transport requirements, not reasons to prefer VLC Video over Media Source for a local playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Copyright and channel considerations
Being able to play a file in OBS does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it. Confirm that you have permission for the video, music and other included material before streaming. The sources cited here do not establish a YouTube policy specific to 24/7 study streams, a stream-duration limit, channel eligibility requirements or whether particular media rights are cleared; check YouTube’s current rules and your rights for the actual content.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified by OBS.
- A file does not play or has no expected audio: Test that exact file locally and in OBS, check its encoding and source audio settings, and try a compatible file. The OBS-supported format list is not a guarantee for every encoded file.
- A single video stops instead of repeating: Open Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- The VLC playlist ends instead of repeating: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- A playlist changes order unexpectedly: Disable Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence.
- Playback restarts or stops after a scene switch: Review Visibility Behaviour; the documented default stops when hidden and restarts when visible.
- The video loops but the YouTube broadcast drops: Treat it as a stream or connection issue, not a playback-loop issue. Check whether OBS remains connected and whether the computer and network are stable; OBS warns that instability or inadequate capacity can cause dropped frames.
- Playlist edits do not show up during a live broadcast: Live-update behavior is not established by the cited documentation. Test your configuration, and restart OBS/YouTube only if that is an acceptable interruption for your stream.
