If your YouTube live stream disconnects, first determine whether the encoder itself is producing bad audio or video, or whether its output looks healthy while the internet connection to YouTube is failing. Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room, restore the encoder feed using the event’s configured stream URL and key, then watch stream health. Do not reset the key automatically: YouTube’s instructions call for a new key for certain encoder-start errors, not every brief disconnection.
Recover the stream by finding where the failure happened
Use the encoder’s own preview and messages in YouTube Live Control Room to separate a source or encoder problem from an outbound network problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the feed, testing the connection when the encoder output appears healthy, and choosing a stream quality that suits the available connection.
- Inspect the encoder output. Check the video and audio in the encoder preview. If either is already missing, distorted, or otherwise unhealthy there, troubleshoot the source or encoder before treating this as an internet-only failure.
- Check Live Control Room. Review the event preview and stream-health messages. Note whether YouTube is receiving a feed and whether its reported health changes when you restore encoder output.
- If the encoder preview is healthy, test the outbound connection. YouTube identifies the outbound internet connection as a possible cause in this situation. If a connection test reports a problem, contact your internet service provider.
- Restore the configured encoder feed. Start or reconnect the encoder using the stream URL and stream key configured for that event. Confirm that the preview and health indicators respond.
- Keep watching the indicators. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. If the feed drops again, use the preview and messages to reassess whether the encoder or the outbound connection is failing.
If the encoder’s own preview is unhealthy
A poor preview points first to a problem before the signal reaches YouTube. Check the encoder’s error messages, the selected audio and video sources, and whether the computer is under heavy CPU load. If you record locally, inspect the archive too: it can help establish whether the fault is present in the captured output or limited to the live connection.
- Confirm the intended camera, media, audio input, and scene or source are selected and active.
- Check the encoder’s status and error messages for a failed input or encoding problem.
- Look for unusually high CPU load and other work competing with the encoder.
- Use the local recording, if available, to check whether the video and audio were captured correctly.
Fix the source or encoder issue, then send the feed again and inspect the YouTube preview. Replacing a stream key is not a remedy for a bad source or overloaded encoder.

If the encoder looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving a stable feed
When the encoder preview looks and sounds normal, test the outbound internet connection rather than changing video sources at random. A connection test that finds a fault is a reason to contact the ISP. YouTube also advises choosing a stream quality appropriate to the connection and testing upload bitrate before a live event; the available connection needs to support the encoder’s output reliably.
Check encoder settings before the next attempt
YouTube’s published encoder guidance gives a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check that setting in the encoder if the feed is unstable or fails to start. The cited guidance does not establish a universal bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, or internet connection, so use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and a real upload test rather than assuming one bitrate will work for every setup.

When to change the stream key
The stream URL and stream key are the encoder’s destination and credentials for sending video to YouTube. Verify that the encoder is using the values configured for the correct Live Control Room event. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions say to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder for certain errors starting third-party encoder software. They do not direct creators to reset the key simply because a stream briefly lost connectivity.
- Confirm the event and its configured stream URL and key in Live Control Room.
- Check that the encoder is using those values and that no obsolete event configuration is selected.
- If the encoder reports a start error for which YouTube instructs you to obtain a new key, create one in Live Control Room and update the encoder before trying again.
Treat a new key as a targeted fix for a key or encoder-start problem, not as the first response to every dropout.

Will the same YouTube broadcast continue after reconnecting?
Do not assume that restoring encoder output guarantees the same uninterrupted event or watch-page continuity. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to stop sending content to end a stream and, for a scheduled stream, direct the creator to select End Stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its published guidance does not specify exactly how every temporary disconnect, reconnect delay, or event setting affects continuity or archiving, so it cannot support a promise that every reconnect remains one event.
If continuity matters, avoid ending the event unless you intend to end it, and check the event in Live Control Room after reconnecting. The available guidance does not provide a universal reconnect timer or a guaranteed same-event recovery procedure.

Prepare a backup encoder for the next event
A backup encoder is a resilience measure for a future failure, not a substitute for diagnosing the current one. YouTube recommends rehearsing failover: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. This checks that the backup path is configured; it does not guarantee that an actual outage will switch seamlessly or without interruption.
- Configure the backup path before the event and verify that it can send a usable feed.
- Run YouTube’s failover rehearsal and confirm that the player actually rolls over.
- Account for the additional equipment and setup complexity; a backup is useful only if the handoff path has been tested.
