YouTube Studio provides the stream URL and private key; the encoder plays one lecture on repeat or a playlist in sequence. For a local setup, the computer, encoder, files, power, and internet connection must remain available. YouTube also warns that a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay, so continuous streaming and replay preservation need separate plans.
How to stream recorded lectures live on YouTube
YouTube Live does not turn a recorded lecture into a live broadcast by itself. An encoder plays the file or playlist and sends its output to YouTube. The YouTube player’s replay or loop controls do not create a live stream; looping behavior depends on the encoder you choose.
1. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. Encoder streaming is an officially supported method. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
2. Prepare and test your lecture programme
Choose whether to repeat one lecture or play several in sequence. Check that the encoder can restart the file or advance to the next item as intended; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not prescribe a universal looping procedure. Test the full sequence, including transitions, and confirm that picture and audio stay in sync before announcing the stream.

Check that the files, slides, clips, music, and any student or guest contributions are appropriate to broadcast and that you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Third-party content can lead to a warning or an interrupted live stream. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and review Studio if a broadcast stops.
3. Create a stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or schedule one from the Manage tab. Scheduling gives you a watch page to promote and lets viewers set reminders.
- In the Live Control Room, retrieve the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream.

4. Connect the encoder and start the broadcast
- In the encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- Select an output resolution and bitrate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings to choose a supported profile; settings and encoder capabilities can change. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers on different devices and connections.
- Start sending the lecture feed. If the stream is scheduled, wait for the preview in the Live Control Room, inspect it, then select Go live.
5. Verify and monitor
Open the watch page on a second device, preferably including a phone, and check the picture, audio, and stream health. Keep an eye on the encoder’s playlist and connection. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time, checking the preview, and verifying access on mobile; if you are recording a local archive, monitor that file as it grows.

Running the encoder locally
With a local encoder, the host computer, encoder process, source storage, power, and upload connection all need to keep working. A computer already on hand and encoder software may be enough; a hardware encoder is another option for a more advanced production. An external drive can help retain source files and local recordings, but storage is not required just to connect an encoder to YouTube.

Plan what you will do if the computer restarts, the encoder closes, the connection drops, or the lecture playlist ends. Check your encoder’s reconnect and playlist settings, and have a way to inspect the stream remotely if you will not be beside the computer. The specific controls vary by encoder.
Cloud playout as an alternative
Cloud playout can remove the need to keep your own computer online, but providers differ. Before choosing one, verify its current file limits, pricing, monitoring, reconnect behavior, and failure recovery; a provider’s own description is not independent proof of uninterrupted service.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a single 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan distinct shorter broadcasts and transitions, and retain a local recording as a backup. Check YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance when setting up, because platform guidance can change.
A local recording adds storage use and another task to manage, but gives you a fallback if the platform replay is unavailable. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; it does not prescribe a particular storage device or capacity.

GATE stream rights, reused content, and monetization
Permission to broadcast is not the same as approval for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams and identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content; reused content is addressed separately. A rightsholder’s permission alone does not establish that YouTube will consider a channel sufficiently original for monetization. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
If your channel is eligible, live-stream monetization features can include ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Confirm eligibility and feature settings in the Live Control Room rather than assuming a GATE lecture stream will earn revenue; see YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
