To reduce OBS interruptions, enable automatic reconnect, make sure your bitrate fits your stable upload capacity, and troubleshoot the network between your computer and YouTube. Reconnect can recover from some brief interruptions, but it cannot fix an unstable internet connection, a failing computer, or a YouTube-side problem. For an unattended 24/7 channel, test the setup before relying on it and plan around YouTube’s archive limits.
First identify what actually stopped
A broadcast ending does not always mean OBS stopped. During an interruption, check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room so you can distinguish an OBS crash from an encoder disconnect or a YouTube event ending.
- Did OBS close or become unresponsive? Check for an application crash.
- Is OBS still open, with the stream output stopped or a reconnect message visible? The encoder connection may have dropped.
- Does OBS still show an active output while YouTube reports the event ended? Check the event’s status and settings in Live Control Room.
- Save the OBS log covering the interruption. The log can help show whether the output disconnected, OBS stopped, or the problem happened elsewhere.
The OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That is useful guidance, not proof that any particular component in your setup is at fault. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
- In OBS Studio, open Settings and select Advanced.
- Find the Network section and confirm that automatic reconnect is enabled. OBS describes automatic reconnect in its Studio Overview Guide.
- Set the retry options to suit the interruptions you expect. There is no evidence here to support a universal retry count or delay; do not assume the starting delay applies to every attempt.
- Apply the settings and run a test stream. Observe whether OBS reconnects after a brief, controlled interruption before depending on it unattended.
For outputs that support reconnect, OBS’s version 32.2.2 API documentation says the retry wait doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. This is API behavior, not a promise that every output, service, or plugin follows an identical schedule. Reconnect is a recovery mechanism: it cannot restore a failed router, ISP connection, overloaded computer, or unavailable YouTube ingest server. OBS Output API Reference

Make the stream sustainable for your connection
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, but choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently. A speed test and a preflight stream are more useful than relying on a peak upload result alone. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and video settings; the figures below are for H.264 only. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will hold the stream. If you see dropped frames, reduce bitrate and test again. Lowering the bitrate reduces outgoing data demand, but may reduce image quality. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work together; change one at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Check the local network path
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. Ethernet can reduce instability on the local Wi-Fi link, but it does not control problems with your ISP or YouTube. If you already use Ethernet, check the rest of the connection rather than assuming a cable will solve every interruption. OBS network troubleshooting guidance
- If you use Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. Consider replacing a cable only if you have reason to suspect it is faulty.
- Check whether the router or modem is losing connectivity or restarting, and inspect the Ethernet cable, network adapter, and adapter drivers.
- Look for VPN, security, or network-prioritization software that could interfere with traffic. If a security product appears to be the cause, use only a brief diagnostic test, restore protection, and follow OBS guidance to add an exception if appropriate.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. These are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate is a fallback that can reduce quality; it does not repair the underlying connection.
Change one variable at a time. After each change, repeat a test stream and compare OBS’s connection behavior and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Test the full setup before leaving it unattended
- Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
- Monitor both audio and video, and confirm that viewers can access the intended watch page.

- If your production depends on a backup encoder, test the failover in advance. YouTube’s guidance describes testing a backup by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable; do this during a planned test, not during a broadcast you cannot afford to interrupt.
A second encoder can add resilience, but it also adds setup and monitoring work. It is an operational choice, not a requirement for every creator.
Understand YouTube’s event and archive behavior
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether an encoder can start or stop a stream. They are event-lifecycle controls, not network-recovery features, and they do not prevent an encoder from disconnecting. Review them in the stream’s settings if YouTube is ending or starting the event unexpectedly. Manage live stream settings
