Recommended Free Tools
For 4K 60fps YouTube Live, use HEVC when your encoder supports it over your chosen YouTube ingest protocol—especially for HDR or when the lower recommended bitrate is useful. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60. Those are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that HEVC will always look better. If your current setup handles H.264 more reliably, use H.264 and test before the event.
What is the difference at 4K60?
H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) are both accepted video codecs for YouTube Live. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, verified October 3, 2026, recommends different bitrates at 4K/2160p and 60 fps:
| Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate at 2160p60 | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | Plan for more upload capacity than the HEVC recommendation. |
| HEVC (H.265) | 35 Mbps | The recommendation is 15 Mbps lower than H.264’s; it does not establish a universal quality advantage. |
These are recommended encoder settings from YouTube, not measurements of a particular camera, encoder, scene, or internet connection. A codec name by itself cannot predict the result: encoder implementation, settings, motion, source quality, and network stability all matter. YouTube’s live encoder settings list the accepted codecs and bitrate guidance.
Which codec should you choose?
Choose HEVC when compatibility and bandwidth make it practical
- Your encoder supports HEVC over the exact YouTube ingest route you plan to use.
- You are streaming HDR over RTMP(S): YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR.
- The lower recommended 4K60 bitrate helps your available upload capacity, while still leaving enough headroom for a stable stream.
Choose H.264 when it is the reliable compatible option
- Your encoder or production chain supports H.264 over the required route but does not support HEVC there.
- You have adequate, dependable upload capacity for the H.264 recommendation.
- Testing shows your H.264 setup delivers the more dependable result in your actual conditions.
Do not infer that an encoder can send HEVC to YouTube just because its specification mentions HEVC. Codec support can depend on the protocol. For example, Blackmagic Design lists its Streaming Encoder 4K as supporting H.264 over RTMP and H.264/H.265 over SRT; that does not establish RTMP HEVC support for that device. Check the exact model and protocol in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Set up the stream for YouTube
For RTMP or RTMPS
- Confirm the encoder and route. Check that your encoder supports the chosen codec over the YouTube ingest protocol you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Select the video format. Set the output to 2160p (4K) at 60 fps if your source, encoder, and connection can sustain it. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Set the video bitrate. Use YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC. Treat these as starting recommendations, then test the actual connection and stream.
- Use CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoder settings.
- Set the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Match color settings to the stream. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, use HEVC with 10-bit settings and keep the encoder configuration and color metadata aligned with the source.
- Test and monitor. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with motion and audio resembling the event. Check stream health and the received picture and sound before relying on the setup.
At 4K, YouTube does not offer its “improve for low latency” option; the stream is set to normal latency. The platform guidance verified October 3, 2026, is on YouTube Help.
If your workflow uses HLS
Do not copy RTMP(S) settings over without checking HLS requirements. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation specifies a different packaging and audio setup:

- Audio and video must be muxed in M2TS.
- H.264 and HEVC video are supported up to 60 fps.
- Closed GOP is required.
- AAC is the supported audio codec, and only single-track audio is supported.
- HDR with HEVC has additional color-format and metadata requirements.
See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide for the protocol-specific details.
Check upload capacity and test the real chain
The recommended 4K60 video bitrate alone is not a connection-speed target. Leave practical headroom for network variation and the rest of your traffic, and verify the upload connection you will actually use. YouTube advises choosing a quality suitable for the connection and running a speed test; a one-time speed result does not prove that an event-length stream will remain stable.

Troubleshooting common problems
The encoder will not send HEVC to YouTube
Likely cause: HEVC support is limited to another protocol or mode on that encoder. Fix: Verify the exact codec/protocol combination in the model documentation and encoder settings. If HEVC is unavailable over your chosen route, use a supported combination such as H.264 over RTMP(S), or choose a route whose requirements your whole setup meets.
The stream drops frames or reports connection trouble
Likely cause: The connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate consistently, or competing traffic is reducing available upload capacity. Fix: Test the real connection, leave headroom, reduce competing traffic, and retest. If necessary, select a bitrate or video configuration the connection can maintain.

The picture does not look better after switching to HEVC
Likely cause: The codec choice alone does not determine quality; source detail, motion, encoder settings, and implementation affect the result. Fix: Compare the same representative scene under tested configurations, inspect the received stream, and avoid treating the recommended bitrate difference as a quality guarantee.
HDR looks wrong or is not accepted
Likely cause: The codec, bit depth, color configuration, or metadata does not match the HDR source and ingest workflow. Fix: For HDR over RTMP(S), use HEVC as YouTube recommends and check that the encoder uses 10-bit HDR settings and matching color metadata. For HLS, consult its separate HDR requirements.

HLS ingest rejects audio or packaging
Likely cause: The stream does not follow HLS-specific requirements. Fix: Confirm M2TS muxing, AAC audio, a single audio track, and closed GOP; do not assume RTMP(S) settings satisfy HLS.

If your current encoder supports the desired codec and protocol, a codec switch may not require new hardware. If it does not, compare the cost and complexity of replacing or adding an encoder with the value of the change for your workflow. Manufacturer specifications are not independent performance tests. For example, TBS describes its TBS2802 4K60 HDMI encoder as supporting H.264/HEVC and streaming to YouTube Live or RTMP/RTMPS servers; verify current model details and compatibility with your own chain before purchase.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube Live stream, rather than encode a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera input. Start the free StreamNeo day.
