If your OBS YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first check OBS’s dropped frames counter and connection indicator, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Rising dropped frames with a yellow or red indicator usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not automatically a defect in OBS. Lower the bitrate to a stable level, confirm YouTube’s encoder settings, and test network causes one at a time.
1. Check whether the problem is dropped frames or playback buffering
During a test stream, watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames counter alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. OBS says dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. An increasing counter plus a yellow or red indicator points to that connection problem.
OBS connects to the streaming platform, while the platform provides the ingest server. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” In context, that statement concerns dropped frames and the connection between your computer and the remote server; it does not rule out software or configuration contributing to a disconnection.
Viewer reports of buffering are a separate clue. OBS’s Help Portal notes that viewers can experience buffering even when the streamer is not dropping frames. If OBS’s counter remains steady, do not assume the stream-to-YouTube connection is the cause: use YouTube’s stream-health feedback and investigate viewer playback or network conditions separately.

2. Match the bitrate to your upload and YouTube’s recommendations
A speed-test result is not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the same upload throughout a stream. OBS suggests setting video bitrate below total upload speed and gives 75% of that speed as a starting estimate. Treat it as a starting point, not a safe threshold for every connection: other network use and changing conditions can reduce available capacity. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality your connection can reliably maintain.
Use YouTube’s published figures for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. The selected recommendations below are encoder targets, not measurements of typical internet speed or disconnection rates. YouTube’s page does not display a publication date; these values were verified on October 3, 2026.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations; a recommended encoder bitrate is not proof that your upload connection can sustain it. If OBS is dropping frames, lower the bitrate and test again rather than trying to preserve resolution at the expense of a stable connection.

3. Confirm YouTube’s encoder settings
For an RTMP or RTMPS stream, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, up to 60 fps. In OBS, compare the output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance for your intended stream. 4. Run a representative test and read stream health
Before a broadcast, YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the program you intend to stream. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room and read the messages that appear; they can point to bitrate, keyframes, codec, or incoming-video problems. Google’s LiveStream health-status reference, last updated September 14, 2026 UTC, documents warnings including excessive bitrate, long keyframe intervals, unsupported video configuration, and insufficient incoming video.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream using the same OBS output settings and network path planned for the event.
- Include representative movement and audio, then observe OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while checking YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health.
- Change one setting or network condition at a time, such as bitrate or connection type, and note whether the OBS counter or YouTube message changes.
- Once the stream stays connected and YouTube reports healthy settings, use those tested settings for the event.
5. Test OBS network and server options
If bitrate and encoder settings look appropriate but dropped frames continue, isolate the network path. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests trying another server if the streaming service offers one. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. As a diagnostic test, OBS lists IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6.

On Windows, test the available network optimization and TCP pacing options. OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion and reduce dropped frames, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying issue and reduces stream quality. Use it as a mitigation, not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.
6. Isolate VPN, security, and network-prioritization software
Temporarily test with VPN software disabled. Firewall or antivirus software can also interfere with streaming traffic. If a controlled test identifies one of them as the cause, add an OBS exception as appropriate and re-enable protection; do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround.

Some computer or motherboard utilities bundle network-prioritization features that may deprioritize OBS. Check whether such software is installed and test its networking features separately. OBS also suggests checking for network-driver updates from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.

7. Check Wi-Fi and the equipment between your computer and the internet
OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet and compare the OBS counter and YouTube stream health. A cable is relevant only if you suspect Wi-Fi instability or a damaged cable; buying equipment is not a general fix for every disconnect.
Other possible fault points include the modem or router connection, cables, network card, switches, and extenders. Isolate equipment where practical rather than replacing parts without evidence. If intermittent disconnections persist or you are unsure which device is at fault, contact your ISP.

- timestamps for each disconnection;
- whether OBS’s dropped-frames counter rose and how its connection indicator appeared;
- YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test;
- whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet and any network changes tested;
- the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec used.
This information helps the ISP investigate the route and service without treating every disconnect as an OBS setting problem.
