For an FFmpeg stream that loses its RTMP network output, wrap the FLV output in FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer and enable attempt_recovery. Set a recovery interval, then decide whether to drop queued packets if the output queue fills. This lets FFmpeg try to restore the output; it does not guarantee uninterrupted viewing or that YouTube will keep the same live event open.

Configure recovery for the RTMP output

Use the FIFO muxer around the FLV output, as in FFmpeg’s documented network-outage example:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1
  -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  rtmp://INGEST_SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY

Replace INPUT with your source, adjust the stream maps and encoding for that source, and use the RTMP ingest URL and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast. Keep the stream key private. The example’s one-second recovery wait is an example value, not a universal recommendation. Confirm the options available in your installed FFmpeg build before using the command.

What the recovery options do

  • -f fifo -fifo_format flv puts a FIFO muxer around an FLV output, the documented pattern for RTMP output.
  • -attempt_recovery 1 enables attempts to recover the output after a failure.
  • -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the wait before another attempt after an unsuccessful recovery. Choose an interval appropriate to the use case and verify the local build’s option behavior.
  • -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 allows processing to continue by dropping packets if the FIFO queue fills. This favors keeping the encoder moving, but dropped packets mean omitted stream content.

The FIFO documentation also describes restart_with_keyframe, which can make output wait for a keyframe after recovery or queue overflow. Whether it is appropriate depends on the encoding and receiver behavior; check the FIFO muxer documentation and test your setup before enabling it.

Distinguish output recovery from input reconnects

First identify which side failed. If the input ended or stopped providing data, recovering the RTMP output will not repair that source. Inspect FFmpeg’s logs for input errors versus output write or network errors.

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options, including its -reconnect family, concern HTTP protocol reconnection—especially reading HTTP inputs. They do not by themselves recover an RTMP output connection. For a network drop on the RTMP output, configure recovery around the output with the FIFO muxer. See the FFmpeg Protocols documentation for protocol-level options and the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the documented option scope.

Choose what happens when the queue fills

Recovery can leave FFmpeg processing while the output is unavailable, but the FIFO queue has limits. The key trade-off is whether to let backpressure block processing or drop packets to keep it moving.

  • Enable packet dropping when keeping processing live matters more than preserving every packet. Content may be missing around an outage or queue overflow.
  • Do not enable packet dropping if avoiding omitted packets is more important and you can tolerate processing blocking while the muxer catches up. The documented default behavior can block the encoder until the muxer processes packets.

Consider likely outage duration, tolerance for gaps, and whether the source can be buffered or replayed. Neither choice guarantees seamless playback for viewers.

Test recovery and check YouTube

  1. Check the local build. Consult the FIFO muxer help available in your FFmpeg binary and confirm that it supports the options you plan to use. Availability and behavior can vary by version.
  2. Verify the destination. Confirm the RTMP ingest URL, stream key, and FLV output configuration.
  3. Test a controlled interruption. Observe FFmpeg’s logs and confirm that it attempts recovery and resumes output after connectivity returns. Test with the same input, encoder, and network conditions you expect to use.
  4. Inspect YouTube Live Control Room. Check the event and viewer playback after reconnection. The FFmpeg documentation does not establish whether a particular reconnection will preserve the same YouTube event or how quickly playback will resume.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not recover

  • FFmpeg exits when the network drops: Check whether the failure is on the output side, then confirm the FIFO wrapper and attempt_recovery option are applied to that output.
  • The input stops or ends: Diagnose the source separately. Output recovery cannot restore input that has failed or finished.
  • FFmpeg remains active but output stalls: Review the logs, destination, stream key, and recovery interval; verify the installed build’s FIFO options and reproduce the failure in a controlled test.
  • Processing blocks after an outage: The FIFO queue may be full. Decide whether enabling drop_pkts_on_overflow is an acceptable trade-off; it can keep processing moving at the cost of omitted packets.
  • FFmpeg resumes but the YouTube event or viewer playback does not: Check the live event in YouTube Live Control Room. A successful FFmpeg output reconnection does not establish that YouTube preserved the event or restored playback seamlessly.
