If OBS stays on “Connecting” while you try to stream to YouTube, first check the stream’s status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Its error message can distinguish a stream-key or setup problem from an encoder or network issue. Then verify OBS’s YouTube service, server and key, confirm the encoder is producing output, and test the outbound connection. There is no single fix for every “connecting” hang.
1. Check YouTube’s stream status before changing OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- Open the relevant stream in Live Control Room and read its stream status, health and any error message.
- Follow the instruction associated with that specific error. YouTube says stream status includes specific errors and instructions; it is a better starting point than guessing from OBS’s “Connecting” label alone. See YouTube’s guide to live stream metrics and status.
A persistent connecting display does not establish the cause by itself. OBS’s connection guide focuses on dropped frames and intermittent disconnections, which are related network symptoms but not proof that every startup hang has the same cause. Keep separate the encoder’s failure to connect and viewers’ buffering: the latter can occur even if the broadcaster is not dropping frames. OBS explains viewer buffering separately.
2. Verify OBS’s YouTube service, server and stream key
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and check that the service and server or stream URL match the YouTube configuration for the stream you intend to start. Confirm the stream key is the current one from YouTube Live Control Room. The key tells the encoder where to send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it, so treat it like a password: do not post it, send it to someone troubleshooting publicly, or include it in screenshots.
If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the replacement; the old key will not become current automatically. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting recommends getting a key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder for certain third-party encoder startup errors. That instruction is specific to those errors, not a reason to reset a key every time OBS takes a long time to connect. YouTube’s stream-key explanation and encoder troubleshooting steps cover these checks.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance. Use the protocol supported by the selected OBS and YouTube configuration; switching protocols is not a guaranteed fix. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
3. Confirm OBS is actually producing a healthy feed
- Check that OBS’s preview shows the intended scene and that the relevant sources are active.
- Inspect OBS’s output status and log for connection, encoder or network messages rather than relying only on the button or status label.
- Make a short local recording if the output looks or sounds wrong. YouTube recommends checking that the encoder is current and that its feed looks and sounds healthy; unusual output may warrant checking CPU load or a local recording.
If OBS itself is not producing usable video or audio, fix that local problem before diagnosing the route to YouTube. If the local feed is healthy but YouTube does not receive it, continue with the connection tests.

4. Check whether your upload connection can sustain the stream
- Run an upload speed test, preferably more than once under the conditions in which you plan to stream. A brief peak does not show that the connection can sustain the bitrate.
- Compare stable upload capacity with your chosen bitrate and YouTube’s current recommendation for the codec, resolution and frame rate you selected.
- If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower it in OBS and test again. YouTube recommends choosing stream quality appropriate to the internet connection; its encoder settings page provides current bitrate guidance by codec and video mode.
OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for setting bitrate, not a guarantee or universal threshold. Network conditions vary, so leave headroom and judge by stability. A lower bitrate can reduce quality, but may help a connection sustain the feed. OBS connection troubleshooting and YouTube encoder settings explain the relevant checks.
5. Isolate VPN, security software and Wi-Fi as possible causes
- Temporarily test without a VPN or network-prioritization utility, if you use one.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering with OBS’s outbound connection. If a controlled test identifies security software as the cause, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on rather than leaving it disabled.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet where practical. This isolates whether an unstable wireless link is contributing; it will not fix an incorrect key or YouTube setup.
Change one thing at a time and retry, so you can identify which test makes a difference. OBS recommends preferring a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable and considering software interference. If the outbound path remains unstable, contact your ISP before replacing networking hardware; OBS advises speaking with the provider if you are unsure whether hardware needs replacement.

6. Use OBS network options only as targeted tests
OBS documents these options as possible tests for connection trouble, not universal remedies:
- Network optimizations and TCP pacing: These are Windows-only options. Some users report they help with disconnections, but a persistent connecting state alone does not establish that they are relevant.
- Bind to IP: Test Default rather than binding OBS to a particular interface.
- IP family: Try IPv4-only as a diagnostic test; restore IPv4/IPv6 if it does not improve the connection.
- Dynamic bitrate: Consider it as a fallback when dropped frames are the issue. It can reduce video quality to cope with network variation and does not repair the underlying connection fault.
These controls can be found in OBS’s advanced network settings; available options depend on the operating system and OBS version. Make a note of existing values so you can restore them after a test. See the OBS guide for its connection options and cautions.

7. Test before going live, then escalate with evidence
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages while streaming. Once a test feed connects, check the Live Control Room status rather than assuming OBS’s connection alone confirms that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers testing and connection-appropriate quality.
If the issue persists, record the exact YouTube status or error, relevant OBS log messages, whether the local preview or recording is healthy, your connection type, and the changes you tested. That evidence helps narrow the cause. If the outbound connection remains unstable across tests, contact your ISP. A persistent OBS “Connecting” label alone does not establish a platform outage or a particular hardware fault.
