To keep an OBS-to-YouTube stream running through a power cut, put both the streaming computer and the modem/router on battery backup sized for their combined load and the runtime you need. A UPS only bridges the outage for as long as its battery can supply power; it cannot prevent a longer outage or an interruption to your internet service. If power does fail, check OBS and the event in YouTube Studio after power returns—do not assume the same live event resumed automatically.
What a power cut can interrupt
OBS encodes video on your computer and sends it over the network to YouTube. A mains failure can stop the computer, while the modem or router may lose power independently. Even if the computer stays on, a dead router or an ISP connection outage can break the stream. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server.
That means a UPS connected only to the PC may not be enough. The computer and the network equipment needed to reach YouTube both need power, and the internet service itself must remain available.
Choose and size backup power
Measure the load and decide how long you need
List the devices that must stay powered during a cut—at minimum, the streaming PC and modem/router—and find their actual wattage. Add their simultaneous load, then choose a UPS with suitable capacity and headroom. Compare the manufacturer’s runtime information at a load close to yours; a headline capacity or VA rating alone does not establish how long your equipment will run.

Runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition and operating conditions. Schneider Electric India’s UPS buying guide explains that more connected equipment reduces available runtime. There is no responsible universal runtime estimate for an unspecified PC, router and UPS combination.
Make sure both the PC and network gear are backed up
- Plug the PC and modem/router into outlets marked as battery-backed, not outlets that provide surge protection only.
- If the UPS cannot power both, consider a separate compatible backup for the modem/router. Check the device label and manufacturer documentation for output voltage, current, polarity and connector compatibility before buying.
- If you need more runtime than the selected UPS can provide, plan a suitable longer-duration backup source instead of treating a small UPS as unlimited power.
Schneider Electric’s guidance supports sizing by load and runtime, but it does not establish a specific product model or a guaranteed runtime for your setup.

Stabilize the internet connection
Use Ethernet between the streaming computer and router where practical. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; its troubleshooting guidance also points to the modem/router, network cables, network cards and other network devices as possible trouble sources.
A wired connection improves the link inside your home, but it does not keep the ISP connection available during a power cut. If your ISP’s equipment or local network loses power, a home UPS cannot restore that service.

Prepare and test before an outage
- Set up the encoder stream ahead of time. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips for encoder setup and preflight. Keep the relevant Live Control Room event available for monitoring.
- Start OBS early and check the preview. YouTube recommends starting the encoder in advance and confirming the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the event.
- Verify the archive. Check that the local recording or archive file is growing and that the event is accessible. YouTube recommends checking archive integrity during encoder-stream preparation.
- Test backup power safely. Under controlled conditions, confirm that the PC and networking equipment are on battery-backed outlets and that the arrangement behaves as intended. Do not wait for an actual outage to discover that an outlet is surge-only or a device is incompatible.
- Monitor audio and video. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring stream quality. Its guidance also describes testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player rolls to the backup encoder, if you have configured one.
What to do when power returns
- Restore the chain. Confirm that the computer, modem/router and internet service are back. Check OBS’s connection status; if it remains disconnected, inspect the OBS log for connection details.
- Inspect the existing event in YouTube Studio. Open the relevant Live Control Room event and check whether it is still active, whether video and audio are arriving, and what viewers can see. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder output separately from the outbound internet connection.
- Reconnect OBS if needed. If OBS is not sending, restore its configured encoder connection, then verify the event again. Never expose your stream key while troubleshooting; use YouTube’s credential controls if you need to replace it.
- Check the local recording before closing apps. Verify the file and its contents if a local recording was in progress. YouTube recommends checking archive-file integrity and growth during encoder preparation.
- Isolate a network problem. If OBS appears to be producing a healthy output but YouTube receives poor or no video, investigate the outbound connection and contact your ISP if the problem persists.
The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not specify a universal recovery window after complete PC power loss or guarantee that restarting an encoder will resume the same live event under every configuration. Confirm the event’s actual status before telling viewers the stream is back.
