If your YouTube live stream drops on Wi-Fi, first connect the encoder computer to your router with Ethernet and run an unlisted test using the same stream settings. If that stays stable, troubleshoot Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or network contention. If it still drops, check available upload bandwidth, encoder health, and CPU load before escalating to your internet provider.
Start by separating Wi-Fi trouble from other causes
A stream can fail because of the wireless link, insufficient or fluctuating outbound bandwidth, encoder problems, or an issue farther upstream. A controlled wired test is the quickest way to narrow it down. YouTube recommends an Ethernet cable connection for live streaming from a computer.
- Connect the encoder computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Keep the stream location, content, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate unchanged if possible.
- Set up an unlisted YouTube live stream for the test. YouTube recommends an unlisted stream for checking equipment before relying on a broadcast.
- Watch both the encoder preview or logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the test runs under representative conditions.
- Compare the result with a Wi-Fi run using the same setup. If wired is stable but Wi-Fi drops, focus on the wireless segment. If both fail, investigate upload capacity and encoder health.
If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not
Check the encoder’s distance from the access point, obstacles between them, signal strength, and whether the wireless network is busy. Reduce competing network use during a test if practical. These are diagnostic checks, not a guarantee that a particular router change will fix an encoder’s connection.
If the setup permits, keep the encoder wired even if other devices remain on Wi-Fi. Choose an Ethernet cable long enough for a safe, direct connection to the router; no particular brand or model is required by YouTube’s recommendation.

If Ethernet also drops
Measure upload capacity at the encoder’s connection, then inspect the encoder preview, logs, and CPU load. If the feed looks healthy inside the encoder but YouTube reports a problem, the outbound internet connection may be responsible. If tests show a connection issue, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is to contact the ISP.
Size the stream for upload capacity, not download speed
For live streaming, the relevant constraint is sustained outbound bandwidth. A fast download result does not establish that the connection can reliably send a live feed. Measure upload at the encoder’s location, ideally both when the network is quiet and when household or office use is typical.

YouTube recommends allowing bandwidth for the primary stream, backup stream, and an additional 20% of headroom. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of reliability. The total streaming bitrate must remain within available upload capacity, and other users sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the encoder.

When capacity is marginal
- Lower the encoder bitrate first, then test again during typical network demand.
- If the required bitrate still does not fit reliably, reduce resolution or frame rate and repeat the test.
- Pause large uploads and other avoidable traffic during diagnosis, but do not assume a quiet-network speed test represents busy-hour performance.
- If upload capacity remains inadequate or unstable on Ethernet, ask the ISP about outbound performance and service options available at your location.
Check encoder settings and computer load
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance as the reference for protocol and output configuration. Its guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds recommended, not exceeding 4 seconds. Match the settings to your encoder software and the stream setup; do not raise bitrate simply because an encoder offers a higher value.
- Encoder preview looks wrong or freezes: inspect the source, encoder configuration, and computer load. Check CPU usage and the encoder’s own logs.
- Encoder preview looks healthy, but YouTube reports connection trouble: test the outbound connection and available upload capacity.
- Health messages mention buffering or keyframes: compare the output settings with YouTube’s current requirements, including the keyframe interval.
Update the encoder software if an update is available, but change one setting at a time during troubleshooting so you can tell which change affected the result.

Prepare a 24/7 setup for interruptions
A successful short test does not establish that a setup will run unattended for days. Test the full audio and video chain with representative content and movement, preview the live feed, and monitor stream health during a longer trial. If you record a local archive, check that the file continues to grow as expected. Confirm that the stream is reachable from the intended watch page or device.
Test backup encoder failover
If you have a backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the backup takes over. The primary and backup streams should use the same keyframe frequency. A backup helps only if its settings and network path are ready when the primary fails.

Decide who or what will notice an outage and how the encoder will be restarted. YouTube’s guidance describes failover testing, but does not prescribe one universal system for unattended recovery in every 24/7 setup.
Account for content rights
Before leaving a stream running continuously, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you broadcast. A technically stable connection does not resolve copyright or reused-content issues. Review YouTube’s current rules for your content and use a copyright checklist before scheduling a long-running stream.
