If your YouTube live stream bitrate keeps dropping, first check whether the encoder is actually losing frames or whether viewers are only reporting buffering. Compare YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health with your encoder’s statistics, then test stable upload capacity and the connection path. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the configured bitrate, lower it; changing encoder settings will not fix an unstable network.
First identify what is dropping
Check two places while the stream is affected: YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and your encoder’s statistics. In OBS, “dropped frames” means the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, according to OBS’s official troubleshooting guide. Viewer buffering by itself does not prove that your outgoing bitrate is falling; playback can fail downstream of your encoder.
- If the encoder reports dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health, investigate the outbound connection and bitrate first.
- If the encoder preview and local recording look normal but the live stream does not, that points toward the connection between the encoder and YouTube rather than the video source.
- If the encoder itself reports errors, or the preview and local recording also stutter, inspect encoding load, source quality, and software as well as the network.
Check whether upload capacity is sufficient and stable
A fast download result does not establish that your connection can send a live stream reliably. Run a speed test and look at upload performance. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom; shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare the encoder’s total configured bitrate with upload performance under realistic conditions—not just a headline speed from an otherwise idle connection. Other people streaming video, uploading files, or using cloud backups on the same network can consume capacity or make it fluctuate. YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its current live encoder table recommends the following video bitrates; they are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your available upload capacity.
| Video setting | H.264 recommended video bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
These selected values are from YouTube’s encoder settings table. Consult its current table for other resolutions, frame rates, minimum settings, and the correct codec row; platform recommendations can change. Choose a setting your outbound connection can sustain with headroom rather than treating a recommended video bitrate as a connection requirement.

Use CBR and check the stream settings
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Check the current instructions in YouTube’s encoder settings table and confirm that your encoder is using the matching settings. If the stream still drops, lower the bitrate enough to leave capacity for network variation and other traffic.
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate in its connection troubleshooting guidance (dated September 30, 2024). Treat this as OBS’s starting-point guidance, not as a YouTube requirement or a substitute for testing stable upload under actual conditions. Reconcile it with YouTube’s headroom advice and the recommended bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and hardware causes
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you are on Wi-Fi, test the same stream over a wired Ethernet connection if available. A wired test can help identify wireless instability, but it will not repair an ISP, routing, or other network fault. An Ethernet cable is a reasonable troubleshooting accessory if you need one for that comparison; the cited guidance does not establish a required cable category or brand.
Check software and competing network tools
- Update your encoder and check its error messages, dropped-frame indicators, CPU load, and local recording.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, network-priority utility, or outdated network driver is interfering with the connection. Change security settings cautiously; do not leave essential protection disabled.
- OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce frame drops during congestion, but it does not repair the connection and may reduce video quality. Consider it a mitigation, not a fix.
Investigate network equipment only when evidence points to it
If there are signs of a local connectivity or equipment problem, restart or investigate the modem and router. Cables, network cards, routers, and modems can be fault points, but a bitrate drop alone is not evidence that a device needs replacing. Change or replace hardware only when troubleshooting supports that diagnosis.

Use the symptom to choose the next action
| What you observe | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Encoder reports dropped frames; upload is inconsistent or shared by busy devices | Reduce competing traffic, test upload again under realistic use, and lower the stream bitrate if stable capacity is insufficient. |
| Encoder reports dropped frames on Wi-Fi | Test over Ethernet to isolate wireless instability. |
| Encoder and local recording look healthy, but YouTube stream health is poor | Focus on outbound upload performance and the connection path to the ingest server. |
| Preview or local recording also stutters, or the encoder reports errors | Check encoder software, CPU load, source quality, and encoder settings along with the network. |
| Persistent outbound connection problems remain after local checks | Contact your internet service provider (ISP) with the test results and stream symptoms. |
