You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from India with FFmpeg by creating a stream in YouTube Studio, then sending the file to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key. The basic command below loops the input indefinitely, reads it in real time, and encodes H.264 video and AAC audio. You still need an eligible YouTube channel, a reliable upload connection, and a check of the Live Control Room preview before you publish.
Before you start
- Check livestream eligibility. YouTube’s general guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. Confirm your account’s status in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements; eligibility is specific to your channel.
- Install an FFmpeg build with the needed encoders. The example uses
libx264and AAC. Available encoders depend on the FFmpeg build you installed; check withffmpeg -encodersif an encoder is reported as unknown. - Have a local video file with audio if you intend to stream audio. Check its dimensions, frame rate, and audio stream before choosing output settings. The example assumes a 30 fps source and is not a tested command for every file or system.
- Test your actual outbound connection. YouTube recommends upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. Conditions in India vary by provider, location, time, and network load; the official guidance does not establish a country-wide upload-speed guarantee. A wired Ethernet connection can help with reliability where available, but does not replace sufficient bandwidth.
For a live stream, YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding; AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. For a broadly compatible starting point, this guide uses H.264 and AAC. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- In Live Control Room, choose the Stream tab and create a stream or select one you already set up.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the URL exactly as provided; the active ingest address can vary. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s credential for sending a feed it can accept. The URL and key are available through YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
- Keep the key private. Do not post it in a public command, screenshot, script, or shared terminal history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream settings.
Build and run the FFmpeg loop command
Replace the file path and ingest placeholder with your actual values. The placeholder is deliberately not a URL: paste the complete RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL supplied by YouTube, followed by the stream key in the format YouTube specifies for your stream.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YOUTUBE_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re reads a file at its native frame rate, which is useful when feeding a live output. The command uses an FLV output with H.264 video and AAC audio, consistent with the RTMP example in the FFmpeg Formats Documentation. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the input options.

Choose bitrate and keyframes for your source
The video bitrate shown, 4500 kb/s, is only an illustrative starting point—not a universal prescription. Select an output resolution and frame rate that suit the source and your sustained upload capacity, then choose a bitrate from YouTube’s settings table for that resolution, frame rate, and codec. Keep the total stream bitrate below your available outbound capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
The example sets -g 60 -keyint_min 60, which corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval for a 30 fps source. If your source or output frame rate differs, adjust the GOP/keyframe values to maintain the interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. The command encodes rather than copies the source because compatibility cannot be assumed for an arbitrary file.

Start the encoder, then publish from YouTube
- Run the command in a terminal on the computer holding the video file.
- Wait for the input preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, and stream health before publishing.
- If the stream is scheduled, click Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not necessarily publish a scheduled stream to viewers by itself.
- Open the watch page and verify playback. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled stream, and setting up at least two hours ahead. These are operational recommendations, not FFmpeg requirements. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Run time, ending, copyright, and reused content
An input loop can continue as long as FFmpeg, the computer, the connection, and YouTube ingest remain available; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted or perpetual YouTube broadcast. Plan for computer, network, and service interruptions. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, so consider the length and archive behavior when planning a long-running loop.
Use only video and audio you have the rights or permissions to stream. A looped or prerecorded format does not make copyrighted material permissible, nor does it guarantee that a channel will meet YouTube’s monetization rules for reused content. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your content before going live; this setup guide cannot determine rights or monetization eligibility for a particular video.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg says the encoder is unknown | Your FFmpeg build may not include libx264 or the requested encoder. |
Run ffmpeg -encoders. Install a build that includes the needed encoder, or select an encoder available in your build and verify its YouTube compatibility. |
| YouTube receives no feed | Wrong ingest URL or key, a typo, or an inactive stream selection. | Copy the URL and key again from the active stream in Live Control Room. Check the output address and ensure the stream key has not been reset. |
| Preview appears, but video or audio is missing | The file may lack that stream, or the selected output mapping/encoding may not match the input. | Inspect the file’s streams with ffmpeg -i "/path/to/video.mp4". Confirm the expected video and audio streams are present and that FFmpeg reports no mapping or encoding errors. |
| Stream health is unstable or playback buffers | Available upload capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent, particularly on a shared or congested connection. | Check sustained outbound capacity at the actual streaming location and time. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, retain 20% headroom, and use a more reliable connection where possible. |
| Keyframe or format warnings appear | Output settings may not match YouTube’s current recommendations. | Use a supported video/audio codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); check the relevant resolution-and-frame-rate bitrate row in YouTube’s encoder settings. |
| FFmpeg stops when the laptop sleeps or shuts down | This method runs on your own computer, so the process depends on the device remaining powered and online. | Keep the machine awake, powered, and connected for the entire broadcast, or use a cloud streaming service designed to run the loop remotely. |
Or let it run in the cloud
