If OBS says the YouTube server is disconnected, first check OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames counter. Rising dropped frames or a yellow/red indicator points toward an unstable route to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Then lower the bitrate, test another ingest server if available, check your local network and interfering software, and verify the YouTube stream key and server URL. The exact cause depends on your OBS log, YouTube stream-health messages, settings, and network.
What “YouTube server disconnected” means in OBS
“Server” refers to the streaming service’s ingest server—the endpoint receiving your stream—not an OBS Project server. OBS says the stream travels directly from your computer to the service; it does not pass through OBS Project servers. A disconnect therefore does not, by itself, mean OBS is down. OBS Help
Several layers can interrupt that connection: upload capacity or network stability, the route to a selected ingest server, local network or ISP conditions, VPN or security software, or YouTube stream configuration. Without an OBS log and YouTube’s stream-health details, the message alone cannot identify which one is responsible.
Fix the connection in a controlled order
Change one variable at a time and watch whether OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames count improve. This makes it easier to tell which check mattered.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Check the OBS connection indicators. During the failure, note whether the dropped-frames counter is rising and whether the connection indicator turns yellow or red. Those signs support a network-path or unsustainable-bitrate diagnosis; they do not identify the exact fault. OBS says dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. - Lower the video bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS’s general troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for diagnosis, not a guaranteed stable rate. Upload speed can vary, and YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare your encoder settings with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. For H.264, YouTube lists 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; these are recommendations, not proof that bitrate caused a particular disconnect. OBS troubleshooting
- Try a different ingest server, if OBS exposes the option. Open Settings → Stream and select another server if one is available. A better result can point to a route-specific issue; it does not prove the original server was globally down. OBS troubleshooting
- Isolate local network and software interference. If you are on Wi-Fi and can test Ethernet with equipment already available, try a wired connection. OBS also identifies VPN and security software as possible sources of interference. Temporarily test the suspected software only when it is safe to do so; if the test supports that diagnosis, restore protection and add a narrow OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled. A wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but will not necessarily fix an ISP or routing fault. OBS troubleshooting
- Verify the YouTube stream and credentials. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that you are using the intended stream and copy its current stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password. If it may have been exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it and update the encoder. Check that the configured server URL is correct; for RTMPS problems, confirm that the URL uses an RTMPS endpoint and that the encoder supports it. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also describes port 443 for some SSL errors. YouTube stream settings · YouTube RTMPS guidance
- Test the full setup and check stream health. Before the real broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and event. If the issue remains after checking OBS, the encoder setup, and your local network, OBS recommends contacting your internet service provider. YouTube encoder recommendations · OBS troubleshooting
Match the encoder settings to the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance checked on October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its bitrate table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the row for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. These settings help you configure a compatible stream; they cannot guarantee that your internet route will remain stable. YouTube encoder settings
OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, also discusses bind-to-IP, IPv4-only testing where appropriate, and dynamic bitrate adjustment as a beta option. Those options may depend on platform and OBS version, so do not assume every menu or label applies to your system. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality when conditions change; it does not repair the underlying network problem. Check the current OBS guide before changing platform-specific settings. Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise as the indicator turns yellow or red | An unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Lower the bitrate, then test the route and local network |
| The connection drops with no clear improvement after lowering bitrate | The cause may be server route, local software/network, ISP, or stream configuration | Change one variable at a time: try another available server, isolate VPN/security software, and verify the stream key and URL |
| YouTube reports an SSL or RTMPS issue | The configured endpoint or RTMPS connection may need checking | Confirm the RTMPS URL and encoder support; consult YouTube’s guidance on port 443 for some SSL errors |
| The problem continues after encoder and local checks | The remaining issue may be outside OBS or your local setup | Review YouTube stream health and contact your ISP with the timing and symptoms |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube around the clock, rather than broadcast a live camera or event from OBS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically tries to recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Start the free day.
