To set the resolution YouTube receives from OBS, open Settings > Video and enter your dimensions in Output (Scaled) Resolution. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution suited to your sources and scene layout. YouTube usually detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically; manual selection in YouTube is optional.

Change the stream resolution in OBS

In OBS Studio, the usual control for the dimensions sent to YouTube is Output (Scaled) Resolution. The exact labels or available controls may vary by OBS version and output mode.

  1. Open OBS and select Settings > Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to fit the space you need to arrange your sources. This is the scene workspace, not necessarily the resolution YouTube receives.
  3. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the width and height you want to stream, such as 1920×1080 for 1080p or 1280×720 for 720p.
  4. Choose a value under Common FPS Values. Match the motion and source you are capturing where practical; 60 fps can require substantially more computer resources than 30 fps.
  5. If output is smaller than the canvas, choose a downscale filter. Keep the intended aspect ratio; stretching an image to fill a mismatched frame distorts it.
  6. Apply the changes, then test a representative scene, including motion and audio, before the event.

OBS describes the canvas as the space available to fit sources and the scaled output as the resolution used for stream or recording output. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Base resolution, output resolution, and rescaling are different controls

Base (Canvas) Resolution

This is the workspace where you place and size camera, capture, image, and other scene sources. Changing it can alter how the scene is composed and may mean repositioning or resizing sources. It is not usually the setting to change just to send a smaller stream.

Output (Scaled) Resolution

This sets the general output dimensions for the stream or recording. For a standard custom stream size, this is the control to use in Settings > Video.

Output > Streaming > Rescale Output

Some advanced output setups offer an encoder-level Rescale Output option for a separate streaming resolution. It can be useful when stream and recording outputs need different sizes, but adds another scaling control to manage. Its exact location and availability depend on the installed OBS version and output mode; do not enable it unless you need separate output dimensions. OBS discusses independent streaming and recording configuration in its overview and the related encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Choose dimensions and frame rate for the source and connection

For many landscape computer streams, 16:9 is practical. Common examples include 1280×720, 1920×1080, and 3840×2160. Other aspect ratios can suit a particular presentation. If the source, canvas, and output ratios do not match, the result may include bars or cropping. Avoid stretching to fill the frame. See OBS’s aspect ratio guide.

Resolution is only one part of a stable stream. Consider the source detail and motion, the computer’s rendering and encoding capacity, and stable upload bandwidth. YouTube’s current published live encoder recommendations include these examples:

Incoming video Codec YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations for incoming live video, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or computer can deliver reliably. YouTube recommends using an upload speed test, leaving bandwidth headroom, using CBR, and setting a two-second keyframe interval (with a maximum of four seconds). Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance for your codec and output combination, and its streaming tips.

Does YouTube need a separate resolution setting?

Usually, no. YouTube Help says that by default it automatically detects incoming resolution and frame rate. If you want to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. This is optional; first confirm OBS is sending the dimensions and frame rate you intended. The available Live Control Room controls can depend on the stream setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings instructions.

Test and troubleshoot before going live

Test with movement similar to the actual broadcast and include audio. Check YouTube’s stream health during the test and while live; YouTube explicitly recommends testing before starting a stream.

Picture is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bars

  • Likely cause: Source, canvas, and output use different aspect ratios, or a source has been stretched.
  • Fix: Check the dimensions in Settings > Video and the source’s fit and crop in the scene. Preserve the intended ratio; use bars or deliberate cropping rather than distortion where appropriate.

OBS reports encoding overload or the video looks choppy

  • Likely cause: The computer cannot render or encode the selected output reliably, particularly at a demanding resolution or frame rate, or the scene uses costly sources or filters.
  • Fix: Reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution or frame rate first, then simplify the scene or reduce expensive sources and filters if needed. Lowering the canvas is generally a less desirable first fix because it can require rearranging sources. OBS explains these trade-offs in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

YouTube receives a different size or frame rate than expected

  • Likely cause: The output dimensions or FPS in OBS do not match the intended values, or a separate rescale option is active.
  • Fix: Recheck Settings > Video and, if using Advanced output, the streaming rescale setting. YouTube normally detects the incoming format; use its manual stream-resolution option only if you specifically need to set it there.

Stream health shows delivery problems

  • Likely cause: The selected bitrate is too demanding for the stable upload bandwidth available, or encoding performance is inconsistent.
  • Fix: Compare the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, leave upload headroom, and test a lower output or frame rate if delivery remains unstable.

Keep the live content eligible and rights-cleared

A correctly configured resolution does not establish that a broadcast is permitted or eligible for monetization. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and content. A resolution change does not make reused material original or resolve a rights issue. StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist as a planning aid; it is not a substitute for YouTube’s rules or legal advice.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video running as a YouTube livestream 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving an OBS computer on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.

  • Nothing at home has to stay on: the stream runs in the cloud, not on your computer or home connection.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.
  • Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing are also available; cancel any time. UPI and cards work in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; only billing length changes. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.

For planning a local upload, the upload-time calculator can help estimate transfer time; the cloud vs PC cost calculator helps compare operating approaches.
