First check OBS’s Stats window: network dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag have different causes and need different fixes. If the network-drop count is rising, focus on the connection to YouTube and the bitrate. If rendering or encoding lag is rising, reduce the work OBS and your computer have to do. A playlist can affect local playback or system load, but it does not by itself prove that the upload connection is failing.

Identify which kind of frame loss you have

Start a representative part of the playlist, then open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running. Watch which counter increases. A stream can look choppy for more than one reason, so do not treat every counter as a network problem.

  • Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote server at the configured bitrate. OBS Project describes dropped frames as a connection that “isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
  • Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames on time. Scene compositing uses GPU resources; OBS Project notes that “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene.” See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
  • Encoding lag: Your encoder is not keeping up with the output workload. This is a system-performance issue, not evidence by itself that your internet connection is unstable.

Record which counter rises, and whether the other counters stay low. If multiple counters climb, work through both the relevant network and performance sections below.

If the network dropped-frames counter rises

OBS attributes network drops to an unstable route to the streaming server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Lowering bitrate can help, but first check whether the connection is stable. A speed test’s peak result does not guarantee that upload capacity will remain steady during a live stream.

Reduce bitrate to fit reliable upload capacity

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and find the streaming bitrate control for your selected output mode. Lower the video bitrate in measured steps, then stream a representative section and watch the network dropped-frames counter.
  2. Choose a target that fits the connection’s dependable upload capacity, not just its best moment. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in the table below as a platform target, then constrain it to what your connection can reliably send.
  3. If reducing bitrate stops network drops but the picture becomes visibly less detailed, treat that as a trade-off while you investigate the connection rather than assuming the lower setting is ideal.

For streaming over H.264, H.265, or AV1, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). It recommends RTMPS. YouTube’s Live Control Room detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the incoming stream for viewer formats. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The table reflects that page as accessed October 3, 2026; its visible version had no publication date, so check it for updates before changing a production setup.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265: recommended (minimum) H.264: recommended (minimum)
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps (10 Mbps) 50 Mbps (14 Mbps)
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps (8 Mbps) 42 Mbps (11 Mbps)
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps (6 Mbps) 34 Mbps (8 Mbps)
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps (5 Mbps) 21 Mbps (7 Mbps)
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps (4 Mbps) 17 Mbps (6 Mbps)
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps (4 Mbps) 14 Mbps (5 Mbps)

These are YouTube’s published recommendations and minimums for the listed codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a guarantee that a connection can sustain the recommended rate. YouTube’s table also covers 720p and lower; consult its current page for those modes.

Test the network path

  • If you are on Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. Keep the test setup otherwise as similar as possible so you can tell whether the connection change helped.
  • Temporarily check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, or manufacturer network-priority tool is interfering with the stream. Do not leave security protections disabled as a permanent fix; use a controlled test and restore protections afterward.
  • Check for current network-driver issues and restart or inspect the router and modem. If drops continue, congestion or routing between your ISP and YouTube may be involved; contact your ISP with the times and symptoms.
  • As a diagnostic comparison, test a different streaming service if available. If that behaves differently, it may help narrow down where the route problem lies, but it does not repair the path to YouTube.

OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing options for Windows only. If you try them, use the instructions in OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and change one setting at a time.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate automatically during congestion to reduce interruptions. The trade-off is reduced picture quality while it adapts; it can help maintain continuity, but does not fix an unstable route or insufficient upload capacity. Treat it as a fallback, not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.

If rendering lag or encoding lag rises

When OBS’s network counter is low but rendering or encoding lag increases, reduce the workload on your system. OBS’s performance guidance recommends lowering output demands and reducing costly scene work.

  1. Lower output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, check Settings > Video and select a less demanding output mode. If 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
  2. Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary sources, reduce resource-heavy filters, and close other applications that are using substantial GPU resources. Recheck Stats after each change.
  3. Check oversized media. If a source’s dimensions greatly exceed the output, use an appropriately sized version of the file where practical. This may reduce work, but results depend on the source and system.
  4. Test supported hardware decoding where available. OBS Media Source has a hardware-decoding option when the GPU supports it. Whether it helps depends on the media file and computer; compare Stats with the option on and off rather than assuming it will improve performance.

Changing resolution or frame rate can reduce detail or smoothness. Test the result against the quality your audience needs and the YouTube guidance for the selected mode.

Check the playlist source and media files

OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. The source provides loop, shuffle, visibility, and network-caching controls. For setup details, see OBS Media Sources.

  • Confirm that the VLC Video source is present, visible, and configured with the intended playlist. Check loop and shuffle only if they match the behavior you want.
  • If the source is missing or will not load, verify that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. A regular Media Source is for an individual supported media file, not the VLC playlist workflow.
  • If playlist items are remote URLs rather than local files, distinguish their playback connection from the OBS-to-YouTube upload connection. A remote media source may fail or stall even while OBS’s upload path is healthy.
  • VLC Video exposes network caching, but OBS’s documentation does not prescribe one universal cache value for local-file playlists. Do not apply a guessed cache number as a general fix.

A local playlist can contribute to decoding, rendering, or playback issues. If OBS’s network dropped-frames counter is rising, however, investigate the send path rather than assuming the playlist is the cause.

Test with YouTube’s stream health in view

After changing settings, run a test using a representative section of the playlist, including similar motion and audio to the planned stream. Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during the same test. YouTube recommends testing under similar conditions and matching quality to reliable upload capacity; the relevant settings and bitrate table are on its encoder settings page.

Separate broadcaster-side symptoms from viewer-side buffering. OBS’s network counter describes the sender’s connection; viewer playback can also be affected by the viewer’s own connection or congestion. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide for streaming and video issues on a computer covers playback problems. A viewer reporting buffering does not, by itself, establish that OBS is dropping frames.

Common symptoms and what to try

What you see Likely area to investigate Next action
OBS network dropped frames rise; rendering and encoding lag stay low Connection to YouTube or bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity Lower bitrate, test Ethernet, and check VPN, security or network-management software, drivers, router/modem, and ISP conditions.
