To prevent audio drift in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, test the complete setup under a representative workload, match capture devices to the frame rate they actually output, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. First determine whether the audio is always delayed by roughly the same amount or falls further out of sync as the stream runs: a measured, fixed offset may be corrected with a sync adjustment, but a growing gap calls for investigating timing and device configuration.

Identify whether the problem is a fixed offset or progressive drift

Compare clear audio-and-picture events at the start of the received stream with the same kind of events later on. A clap visible on camera, for example, can help you judge whether sound is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows over time. Review the stream received by YouTube, not just OBS’s local preview; this helps locate where the desynchronization first appears.

  • Roughly the same offset throughout: After measuring it, a source sync offset may help.
  • The gap grows during the stream: A fixed offset is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Check capture timing, device clocks, sample rates, source frame rates, and the chain feeding OBS.

There is no single universal cause established for progressive drift. The right diagnosis depends on the devices, settings, signal path, and stream behavior.

Test the complete 4K60 setup before going live

Use a private or otherwise controlled test with the resolution, frame rate, scenes, video sources, and audio sources you intend to use. Include movement and sound similar to the actual broadcast, and make sharp audiovisual events near the beginning and later in the test so you can distinguish a stable offset from accumulating drift.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. Its encoder guidance also says that 2160p (4K) streams do not offer the low-latency option: they are optimized for quality and set to normal latency. That latency setting is context, not evidence that normal latency causes audio drift. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance

  1. Start a controlled stream using the intended production setup.
  2. Check the received stream at multiple points, including near the beginning and later in the test.
  3. Note whether the mismatch is constant or grows, and whether it is already present in OBS’s preview.
  4. Review YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics and address any relevant messages.
  5. After each material change, repeat the test with the same representative workload.

Check 4K60 encoder and audio settings

Use YouTube’s current guidance as a configuration check, not as a guaranteed cure for clock drift. A suitable setting still depends on the encoder, connection, and signal chain.

Setting YouTube guidance
2160p (4K) at 60 fps video bitrate Recommended: 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 50 Mbps for H.264. Minimums: 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 14 Mbps for H.264.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio sample rate 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound.
Audio format AAC or MP3. 5.1 surround sound is supported only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not proof that a particular bitrate, codec, or keyframe interval prevents audio clock drift. Consult the YouTube encoder settings page for the current guidance.

Match capture devices to their actual source timing

If an HDMI capture device is in the signal path, set its resolution and frame rate to match the source it receives. AVerMedia’s GC553 setup instructions give examples including 60, 59.94, 30, and 29.97 fps; do not assume 59.94 and 60 are interchangeable when configuring a source. These instructions apply to that device and setup, rather than every capture device. AVerMedia GC553 OBS setup instructions

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Check the source output, capture-device settings, and OBS source configuration together. A capture card is relevant only when capturing an external HDMI source; buying one is not a general fix for drift.

Use a sync offset only for a measured, stable delay

When the mismatch stays approximately constant, adjust the affected source’s sync offset in small, measured increments, then repeat the test. AVerMedia’s GC553 guide shows the control in OBS under Advanced Audio Properties and gives a range of -50 to -200 ms for its documented scenario. That range is setup-specific, not a universal recommended setting.

Read YouTube health messages and OBS dropped-frame symptoms correctly

YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists configuration or health issues that include audio sample-rate errors, sample-rate mismatch between primary and backup streams, frame-rate mismatch between primary and backup streams, video ingestion starvation, and long keyframe intervals. Read the actual warning and investigate the setting it identifies; a warning is not automatically proof that it caused the sync problem. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams

Dropped frames are a separate clue. OBS says they indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Lowering the bitrate to a sustainable level may help; dynamic bitrate can also help avoid drops, but it is a fallback rather than a root-cause fix and may reduce video quality. Check network stability and delivery separately from audio sync. OBS stream connection troubleshooting

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom What to check Next step
Audio is delayed by about the same amount throughout Compare audiovisual events in the received stream at more than one point. If the offset is stable, adjust the affected source’s sync offset in small measured increments and retest.
Audio and video separate progressively Capture timing, device clocks, capture routes, sample rates, source frame rates, and OBS logs. Investigate the signal chain; do not treat a fixed sync offset as a drift correction.
Sync differs between OBS preview and the received stream Compare the local preview with the stream received by YouTube. Use the received stream and YouTube health messages to help locate where the issue enters the chain.
YouTube reports an audio or video configuration issue The specific health message, including sample-rate or frame-rate mismatch, keyframe interval, or ingestion starvation. Correct the setting named by the message and retest; do not assume every warning explains drift.
OBS reports dropped frames Connection stability and whether the upload can sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the connection and, if needed, reduce bitrate to a sustainable level. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback with a quality tradeoff.
Problem appears with an HDMI capture source Whether capture resolution and frame rate match the actual source output. Verify the device and OBS settings against the source; use device-specific instructions where applicable.
