To remove a copyright strike from a YouTube live stream, first confirm that YouTube actually applied a strike. If it did, your options are to complete Copyright School and wait 90 days, ask the claimant to retract the removal request, or submit a counter notification if the takedown was mistaken or misidentified. Deleting the stream after a strike is applied will not clear it.

First confirm whether you have a copyright strike

Open YouTube Studio and check the Dashboard for active copyright strikes, then inspect the affected stream’s copyright details. YouTube’s official notices come from no-reply@youtube.com. Read the notice carefully: a copyright strike, a Content ID claim, and another account or policy restriction are different issues and do not have the same resolution process.

A strike follows a legal copyright removal request. A Content ID claim on an archived live stream is handled through a separate process and may be made after the broadcast ends if you chose to archive it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, including another live broadcast. It may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A strike can also end the stream and restrict your ability to live stream for seven days.

Check whether the removal is scheduled or the strike is already active

Some removal requests are scheduled, giving you seven days before the content is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, deleting the affected content or getting the claimant to retract the request can avoid the strike. You cannot submit a counter notification until the removal takes effect and the strike is applied.

#1 Best Overall

If the strike is already active, deleting the stream or video does not remove it. Use one of the resolution routes below instead.

Choose the right way to resolve an applied strike

Option When it fits What happens Key limitation
Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days You accept the strike and do not pursue a dispute. The strike expires after the 90-day period under YouTube’s stated conditions. The channel must have fewer than three copyright strikes for this expiration route. The removed content is not restored just because the strike expires.
Ask the claimant to retract the request You think the claimant may have made a mistake, or they agree to withdraw the request. A retraction clears the associated strike, subject to other videos remaining associated with it. It can restore the removed content unless you deleted it. The claimant must act. YouTube says it does not mediate copyright ownership disputes.
Submit a counter notification You have a good-faith basis to believe the removal was mistaken or misidentified, including because of a copyright exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. You ask YouTube to reinstate the content through a legal process. It requires prescribed information and shares your contact details with the claimant. The claimant may take legal action to prevent reinstatement.

Option 1: Complete Copyright School and wait

Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire, provided your channel has fewer than three copyright strikes. Expiration clears the strike under YouTube’s stated route; it does not put the removed stream or video back online.

Option 2: Request a retraction

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the active strike and locate the claimant’s contact details.
  2. Contact the person or organization that filed the removal request. Explain why you believe the request should be withdrawn and ask them to retract it.
  3. Check Studio for the strike’s status after the claimant acts.

YouTube does not negotiate ownership disputes between creators and claimants. A retraction clears the strike associated with the request unless other videos remain associated with it. It can restore the removed content unless you deleted it.

Option 3: Submit a counter notification only with a valid basis

A counter notification is a legal request for reinstatement, not a general appeal for a second opinion. Use it only if you believe the removal resulted from a mistake or misidentification and can explain that basis honestly. The original uploader or an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit it.

YouTube’s Studio process asks for contact information, a concise explanation, required legal statements, and your full legal name as a signature. YouTube says a full legal name and physical address are required; a channel or company name cannot replace your legal name. YouTube forwards a valid counter notification to the claimant, so consider the personal-information disclosure before filing.

After receiving a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action taken to prevent reinstatement. If they do not, YouTube says the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. YouTube may remove it again if it later receives evidence of legal action. You can check the counter-notification status in Studio.

  • Do not submit false information or fraudulent documents. YouTube warns that misuse may result in account termination or other legal consequences.
  • Keep records of relevant communications and evidence.
  • If the case is complex or you are concerned about disclosing personal information, consider getting legal advice. YouTube permits an authorized representative, such as an attorney, to submit on your behalf.

Prevent another interruption on a future live stream

  • Before streaming, make sure you have permission for music, video clips, broadcasts, and other third-party material for the specific use you intend.
  • If you have licensed third-party content, ask its owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube advises this because a stream may still be interrupted even when you have a license if your channel is not allowlisted.
  • If you archive the live stream, remember that Content ID claims for archived live streams can be made after the broadcast ends. A later claim is not automatically the same as an active strike.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos; it does not remove or resolve copyright strikes, and it does not stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
