YouTube supports 4K bitrate streaming for horizontal live broadcasts, but not for the vertical live feed in the YouTube app. The YouTube Help pages cited here do not identify an India-specific restriction, so a missing 4K option should not be blamed on location alone. First identify whether 4K is missing from your encoder, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or a viewer’s playback menu: each points to a different part of the stream.
Where is 4K missing?
“Not showing 4K” can describe three separate problems. Check which one applies before changing settings:
- Your encoder cannot select 2160p: check the encoder’s output options and whether your source is actually 4K.
- The Live Control Room preview is below 2160p: check the resolution and frame rate your encoder is sending, then review stream health.
- A viewer cannot select 2160p: compare playback on another device or network and check whether the broadcast is horizontal or vertical.
YouTube’s format guidance distinguishes horizontal live broadcasts, which support 4K bitrate streaming, from the vertical live feed in the YouTube app, which does not. That is a format and app caveat, not evidence of an India-only ban. YouTube’s live streaming overview explains the format distinction.
Check the encoder’s actual output
Choosing a 4K source file or camera does not by itself establish that the encoder is sending 2160p. Verify the output resolution and frame rate in the encoder, and compare them with the Live Control Room preview. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder resolution and frame rate automatically by default.

Use a custom stream key for manual resolution settings
If you need to set resolution manually, create a custom stream key in Live Control Room and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. The exact labels in third-party encoder software vary, so confirm the encoder’s outgoing resolution as well as the setting you intended to use. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Use bitrate recommendations for the codec and frame rate
YouTube’s current recommendations for 2160p are:
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain the stream. The figure depends on the codec and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the selected codec and the associated minimum values. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For 2160p, low-latency optimization is unavailable; YouTube sets the stream to normal latency.

Check upload capacity and stream health
The encoder needs stable outbound bandwidth—not just a fast download connection. YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom over the total streaming bitrate and counting primary and backup streams in that total. As YouTube puts it, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Measure available upload capacity while the network is being used as it normally would be.
- Compare that upload capacity with the combined bitrate of the primary stream and any backup stream.
- Preview the broadcast in Live Control Room before going live, then monitor stream health and any reported messages.
- If the encoder output is healthy but the stream has problems, investigate outbound connectivity and competing traffic on the network.
YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for different devices and networks. That means a viewer’s playback options are not a direct readout of the encoder’s local menu; use the preview, stream-health information, and reports from viewers to locate where the problem occurs. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes this transcoding process.

Separate an encoder problem from a viewer problem
Use the pattern of reports to narrow down the fault:
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| One viewer cannot select or play 4K | Test another device and connection; the issue may be specific to that viewer’s device or network. |
| Several viewers on the same network report trouble | Check that shared network’s capacity and connection. |
| Viewers on separate networks report the same problem | Recheck the encoder output and Live Control Room stream health. |
| The preview itself is not 2160p or shows health errors | Inspect the encoder’s outgoing resolution, bitrate, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. |
This is a troubleshooting path, not a definitive diagnosis: the stream URL, encoder output, preview and affected playback devices are needed to identify an individual fault. YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips provide the relevant checks.

Is India the reason?
The cited YouTube Help material describes general 4K live support and the vertical-feed limitation, but it does not establish a current India-specific restriction or guarantee availability for every device or app version in India. If 4K is missing, first check orientation, encoder output, stream health, and viewer playback conditions rather than assuming the country is the cause.
To narrow down a specific case, note the viewer’s device and whether they use the YouTube app or a browser; whether the stream is horizontal or vertical; the encoder’s resolution, codec, frame rate and bitrate; and what the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages show.
