For a typical recorded class with slides and a mostly stationary instructor, start at 1080p, 30 fps, with a 14 Mbps H.264 video bitrate if your encoder and internet connection can sustain it. If the stream is unstable, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest video bitrates, not guaranteed upload-speed requirements or promises about what viewers will see.

First, distinguish a continuous broadcast from a 24/7 YouTube live event: looping prerecorded classes through a continuous stream is not a reliable way to create one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording or use a workflow designed to continuously stream prerecorded video.

Choose the right 24/7 streaming setup

Looping recorded classes

If the goal is to play prerecorded lessons continuously, use a workflow that loops uploaded video files into a YouTube live stream. A single live event left running for 24 hours is not a dependable archive strategy: YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says a stream beyond 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep your original class files and, when you need a live-event recording, a local archive as well.

A live class or single event

For a class encoded live as it happens, set the video quality in your encoder and monitor the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For either setup, the quality you send must remain stable on the actual encoder and connection; a higher setting is not useful if it causes interruptions.

Recommended quality settings for a recorded class

YouTube’s live encoder table lists the following recommended H.264 ingest bitrates. The help page does not state a publication year; figures below reflect the guidance accessed on October 3, 2026. They are encoder video-bitrate recommendations, not total connection-speed requirements.

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 video bitrate When to use it
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps A good starting point for readable slides and a mostly stationary instructor when the encoder and connection handle it reliably.
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps Try this if 1080p30 is unstable or puts too much load on the encoder or connection.
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps Use only if the class includes motion that benefits from 60 fps and the system can sustain the higher rate.
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps A lower-resolution 60 fps option when motion warrants it; test stability with your actual setup.

For most lectures, 30 fps is sufficient: slides and a lecturer typically have limited movement, so 60 fps may add encoding and network demand without a clear benefit. These are practical recommendations, not a YouTube rule for classes. YouTube automatically transcodes an accepted live feed into multiple output formats for different devices and connection conditions. Its guidance is to choose a quality your internet connection can deliver reliably: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The precise control labels in your encoder can differ by software. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also specifies constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS transport, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the keyframe interval above four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its live video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but use a codec supported by both your encoder and chosen workflow.

Set latency and DVR for learners

  • Latency: Choose normal latency unless learners need real-time interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering and matters less when the creator is not interacting with the audience. See live-stream latency.
  • DVR: Enable DVR if viewers should be able to pause or rewind while the stream is live. This is a separate viewer-control decision from resolution and bitrate.

Test before students rely on the stream

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the connection that will carry the stream. Leave headroom for normal fluctuations and other network use; a connection that tests at exactly the recommended video bitrate is not guaranteed to remain stable.

  2. Send a test using the actual class material, including representative slide changes, instructor movement, and audio. Confirm the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval.

  3. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health status, and any warnings or messages. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend monitoring stream health and messages in Studio: YouTube live-streaming tips.

  4. Check playback on the devices and networks your learners are likely to use. Confirm that slides remain readable and that audio stays synchronized.

  5. If you need an archive, verify that the local recording is being written and growing before relying on it. For a single event, stop the encoder after YouTube has stopped the event. If you use a failover setup, test that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.

Troubleshooting unstable or poor-quality video

  • Stream health reports instability: Lower the resolution or bitrate—try 720p30 at 8 Mbps if you were sending 1080p30. Retest on the actual connection and account for other network use rather than assuming the nominal upload test will hold continuously.
  • Slides or text look soft: Check that your encoder is sending the intended resolution and that manual resolution settings are configured correctly. If a stable 1080p30 feed is possible, it may make text and instructor detail clearer than 720p; YouTube transcodes the accepted feed for viewer playback.
  • Video stutters or the encoder struggles: Reduce frame rate to 30 fps for a lecture with little motion, or lower resolution and bitrate. Change one setting at a time and check stream health again.
  • Viewers report buffering: Lower latency settings can contribute to buffering. If real-time interaction is unnecessary, use normal latency; also confirm that the incoming stream itself is healthy.
  • Learners cannot rewind: Check whether DVR is enabled for the live stream. DVR controls pausing and rewinding during the live broadcast; it does not guarantee that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived.
  • The 24-hour broadcast has no complete YouTube archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or use a streaming workflow intended for prerecorded files rather than depending on a single event archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded classes that need to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
