Find the first place the picture turns black: OBS preview, YouTube Live Control Room, or the public player. If it is already black in OBS, troubleshoot the video source and scene before changing YouTube bitrate settings. If OBS looks right, check YouTube’s stream-health warnings and the encoder-to-YouTube settings.
1. Find where the picture disappears
Follow the video along the whole path: file or playlist, encoder preview, YouTube’s incoming stream, then the public player. The earliest black image points to the layer to investigate.
- Black in OBS preview: Start with the selected file, Media Source playback, and scene visibility and order.
- Visible in OBS but black in Live Control Room: Check the session’s stream-health messages and confirm the encoder’s output settings.
- Visible in Live Control Room but black in the public player: Check the live session and player state, and read any warnings YouTube displays. The available official guidance does not establish one universal cause for this symptom.
There is no established single cause for every RTMP-loop black screen. Without knowing where it occurs, the encoder, file, scene, and any health warnings, it would be premature to blame a particular codec, GPU, file defect, or YouTube outage.
2. If the OBS preview is black
Work through the source and scene before changing delivery settings. OBS Media Source controls and scene layering can determine whether the file is visible and playing. OBS Media Sources

- Confirm the file. Open the Media Source properties and verify that the intended video is selected and can be played.
- Check the active scene and source visibility. Make sure the Media Source is present and visible in the scene currently being sent to YouTube. Check whether another source above it in the scene is covering it.
- Start playback. Confirm that the media has begun playing rather than waiting at the start or sitting at its end.
- Set the loop behavior. In the Media Source properties, check Loop if the video should repeat.
- Check activation and end-of-playback controls. Review Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Close file when inactive. If the file is closed while the source is inactive, OBS documentation notes there may be a short delay while it reloads when shown again.
These controls help distinguish a file that never started, a source hidden by the scene, and a source that stopped or is reloading. Adjust the setting that matches the observed behavior rather than changing unrelated encoder settings.
3. If OBS looks right but YouTube is black
Open the live session in YouTube Live Control Room and read its stream-health messages. YouTube’s health documentation covers configuration issues such as video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, audio, and a mismatch between primary and backup streams. A warning is more useful than guessing at a generic “black screen” fix. YouTube Live stream health

Then compare the encoder’s actual output mode with YouTube’s recommendations for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec and output mode, so use the matching row rather than a bitrate copied from a different resolution or frame rate. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec and output mode: Check the selected video codec, resolution, and frame rate against the applicable YouTube recommendation.
- Audio: Confirm the encoder is sending a supported audio codec if the stream is expected to include audio.
- Primary and backup: If using both streams, check that their configuration matches the session requirements.
Make one relevant change at a time and check whether the warning or image changes. That makes it easier to identify the cause than changing several settings together.

4. Check whether the problem is network-related
In OBS, inspect the dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reducing bitrate may help when the connection cannot keep up; it will not make a file or scene visible if the local preview is already black. OBS dropped frames and network issues
- Preview is black and there are no delivery symptoms: Return to file selection, scene layering, and media playback.
- Preview is good but frames are dropping: Investigate the network path to the ingest server and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable.
- Preview is good and YouTube shows a health warning: Address the specific warning and verify the matching encoder settings.
5. Test before relying on the loop
Use a test with audio and video motion similar to the planned stream, then watch the preview and stream-health messages while it runs. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

6. Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| OBS preview is black | Selected file, Media Source playback, active-scene visibility and source order, and loop and end-of-playback controls. |
| OBS preview works; YouTube reports a configuration warning | The warning’s named setting, then YouTube’s recommendation for the stream’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| OBS preview works; OBS reports dropped frames | Connection stability to the ingest server and whether the bitrate is sustainable; consider reducing bitrate if the connection cannot keep up. |
| Live Control Room looks right; public player is black | The session and player state, plus any YouTube messages. The symptom alone does not establish a specific cause. |
