For a repeating store promo, OBS is the tool that plays your video or playlist and sends it to YouTube Live; YouTube Live is the destination, not a playlist encoder that loops your source files. Use OBS if you want local control and can keep the computer, power and internet connection available. If you want a YouTube stream to keep playing from the cloud instead, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded videos without a computer running, at one price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps, and the first day is free.
What “YouTube Live playlist vs. OBS” actually means
These are different parts of the workflow, not two equivalent ways to loop a video. YouTube Live receives an encoder feed; OBS can supply that feed from a local media file or playlist. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key to connect the encoder to the live stream. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
A regular YouTube playlist is not, by itself, a live encoder that repeatedly plays source files into a live broadcast. If your goal is a live channel showing promos in sequence, you need a source that plays the media and a live encoder path—or a cloud service that does the playout for you.
| Option | What it does | Computer dependency | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS on a local computer | Plays one local file or cycles through a VLC playlist in an OBS scene, then sends the live feed to YouTube. | The computer running OBS, power and network connection must remain available for the feed to continue. | You want local control and can operate and monitor the equipment. |
| StreamNeo cloud playout | Plays uploaded videos or a playlist from the cloud to a YouTube channel. | Your computer does not need to stay online for the stream to continue. | You want an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining a local encoder. |
| YouTube Live alone | Receives and broadcasts an encoder feed; it does not independently loop the source files in this workflow. | It still needs an encoder feed. | You need the destination for the live broadcast, not the media player. |
Check YouTube access before scheduling a store stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days to live stream. The first activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable access and test before the date you plan to use the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

How to loop a store promo through OBS
- Enable and confirm YouTube Live access. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Add the media in OBS. For one repeating video, add a Media Source to a scene and enable its Loop control. For several files, install VLC and add a VLC Video source; arrange the playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and choose whether to shuffle. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Check the scene. Confirm the promo is framed correctly and that its audio behaves as intended. Preview the scene before going live; OBS’s media documentation does not prescribe a store-specific layout or audio level.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder setup. Keep the key private. Start streaming in OBS to send the feed to YouTube. Follow the current YouTube encoder workflow for the Studio controls.
- Monitor the setup. A local stream depends on the OBS computer and its power and network connection. Plan how someone will notice and recover from a computer, power or network interruption; the setup instructions do not guarantee unattended uptime.
- Use media you have the necessary rights to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; details are below.
What to verify for a public store display
The platform guidance cited here explains how to send a live feed, but it does not establish whether your particular use of a public YouTube Live stream is permitted or suitable as an in-store commercial display. Check YouTube’s current terms and make sure your store’s playback and display arrangement is allowed. A cloud provider’s ability to broadcast continuously also does not, by itself, establish permission for commercial display.
Do not choose a computer based on an assumed minimum specification: the sources cited here do not establish CPU, memory or other requirements for a particular resolution, media format or continuous-uptime target. Test the intended media and setup, and confirm it can sustain the workload you need.

Copyright, archives and ads: limits that affect the plan
Live copyright checks
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content continues, the broadcast can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party material may be interrupted unless the rights holder has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and secure the rights needed for the video and any music before you broadcast.
Automatic archiving
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or more; see the encoder guidance.

Monetization is not guaranteed
For monetized channels with stream monetization enabled, YouTube may serve pre-roll, display or mid-roll ads, but an ad is not guaranteed for every slot. If the live player is embedded on an external site with auto-start, ads are turned off. A store operator should not assume an in-store stream will earn ad revenue or that monetization suits the display. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a YouTube live stream. | Live access has not been enabled, the channel is not verified, or it has a restriction. | Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The video stops at the end instead of repeating. | The source’s loop control is not enabled. | For one Media Source, enable Loop. For a VLC Video playlist, enable Loop Playlist and confirm the files are arranged as intended. |
| The playlist does not appear in OBS. | VLC may not be installed, or the source may not be configured with the intended files. | Install VLC, review the VLC Video source’s playlist, and preview the scene. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. | The encoder may not be connected with the correct server URL and stream key, or OBS may not be sending. | In YouTube Studio, check the selected stream’s URL and key, enter them in the encoder setup, then start streaming in OBS. Treat the stream key as private. |
| The live feed is interrupted or replaced. | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the local computer, power or network may have stopped sending. | Check the copyright notice and rights-holder allowlisting if applicable; otherwise inspect the OBS computer, power and connection before restarting the encoder. |
