Yes, but only if the specific VPS can sustain both the encoding workload and the outbound bandwidth. For YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p60 bitrate, plan for at least 42 Mbps of available upload capacity with AV1 or H.265, or 60 Mbps with H.264, before other traffic or backup feeds. These are network calculations based on YouTube’s guidance—not proof that any particular VPS is capable of running the stream continuously.

What a VPS must handle

A 24/7 stream has two separate demands: producing the video feed and delivering it reliably to YouTube. A VPS that can send a stream is not necessarily powerful enough to encode one, and a large advertised port speed does not establish that the server can sustain the required throughput.

Encoding the live source

If the VPS encodes live camera or other source footage, its CPU or GPU must process the real source at the target resolution and frame rate without falling behind. YouTube’s encoder settings specify the format of the incoming feed, not a minimum VPS processor or graphics card. There is no universal vCPU or GPU threshold supported by YouTube’s guidance.

Relaying an already encoded feed or file

If the VPS relays an already encoded stream or plays a prepared video file, the compute work differs from live encoding. Outbound network capacity still matters: the server must continuously deliver the stream to YouTube at the chosen bitrate, with headroom and a route that remains stable. This distinction is an engineering consideration, not a provider benchmark.

Set the 4K60 feed to YouTube’s recommended values

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists these bitrate values for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate Upload capacity with 20% headroom at recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps At least 42 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps At least 60 Mbps

The headroom calculation applies YouTube’s recommendation to leave 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat the minimum figures as lower bounds, not the recommended 4K60 quality target. Allow additional capacity for other server traffic, a backup stream, or any other use of the VPS connection. YouTube explains that the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth in its streaming tips.

Other encoder settings

  • Protocol: RTMPS is recommended; YouTube also lists RTMP.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: Every two seconds is recommended; the interval must not exceed four seconds.

Configure the encoder to match the selected codec’s bitrate target, then confirm YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate in its preview and stream-health indicators. A 4K60 source alone does not establish that the delivered feed is actually reaching YouTube at 4K60.

How to check whether a VPS plan is suitable

Evaluate the actual plan and workload rather than relying on a provider’s headline vCPU count or network-port speed. YouTube’s guidance does not specify server hardware requirements, and no provider can be judged sufficient without sustained tests of the relevant plan.

Check these plan-specific factors

  • Sustained outbound throughput: Can the server maintain the selected bitrate plus the required headroom for long periods?
  • Egress rules and cost: Does the plan impose transfer caps, throttling, or charges that affect continuous delivery?
  • Encoding performance: For live encoding, does the actual server keep up with the source at 4K60 using the intended codec and settings without missed frames or throttling?
  • Network route and interruptions: Does the connection to YouTube’s ingest remain stable, and what happens during interruptions?
  • Operations and recovery: What are the provider’s reboot and maintenance behavior, and can the encoder or stream recover after a process or server failure?
  • Storage and preservation: Is there enough storage for any local recording you need, and does the plan allow the required sustained writes?
  • Total cost: Include compute, storage, backups, network egress, monitoring, and any redundancy required by your design.

When comparing VPS plans, use the same target source and settings on each candidate. A short successful connection does not show that the plan will keep encoding, sending, and recovering the stream continuously.

Preflight the stream before relying on it

  1. Set the real workload. Use the actual source, 4K60 output, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval intended for production.
  2. Measure encoding behavior. For a live encode, observe encoder load, missed or delayed frames, and any performance throttling under sustained operation. For a relay or prepared file, verify the VPS handles that exact workflow reliably.
  3. Sustain the outbound test. Confirm that the server can upload at the target bitrate with YouTube’s 20% headroom, plus allowance for other traffic. Check the provider’s egress limits as well as the observed connection.
  4. Connect to YouTube and inspect health. Check the preview and stream-health status through your YouTube Live workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers configuring an encoder and verifying the connection.
  5. Test recovery and failover. Simulate a connection interruption and an encoder-process failure in a controlled test. Confirm what restarts automatically and what needs manual intervention; YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring the stream.
  6. Verify viewing and recording. Check that the watch page is accessible to the intended audience and that any local recording is being written and growing as expected.
  7. Monitor continuously. Keep an eye on stream health, audio, video, server load, available storage, and outbound traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips advise testing, monitoring, and leaving bandwidth headroom.

Plan separately for a 24/7 archive

A continuous broadcast and a continuous replay archive are not the same thing. YouTube warns that a live stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR for live streams.

If viewers need a reliable replay, keep a local recording and verify it is growing during the stream. If you plan to divide the broadcast into segments or restart it to manage archives, test that workflow in advance; do not assume a single uninterrupted stream will become a complete VOD.

Common VPS streaming problems and fixes

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops: Check sustained outbound throughput, packet or connection interruptions, route stability, and competing traffic. Ensure available capacity exceeds the stream bitrate by the recommended 20% margin, with extra room for other uses.
  • The encoder cannot maintain 4K60: Check for missed frames, sustained CPU/GPU load, and throttling while encoding the real source. Reduce workload or change the VPS plan only after retesting the intended codec and output settings; YouTube does not publish a universal VPS hardware threshold.
  • The stream connects but the output is not 4K60: Verify the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health. A successful connection by itself does not confirm the output settings.
  • The stream fails to resume after an interruption: Check whether the encoder process or server recovered, test the configured failover path, and verify the YouTube connection again. Recovery behavior needs an operational test; do not assume a VPS provider or encoder restarts every component automatically.
  • The broadcast is available but its replay is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited. Use a verified local recording when preservation matters and test any segmentation plan.
