The Copyright check can identify potential matches, but it is not clearance: YouTube says, “Copyright check results aren’t final.” YouTube also scans active livestreams, so a clean upload check cannot guarantee the stream will stay uninterrupted.
How to check a video for copyright before you stream it
- Upload the final video to YouTube Studio. Start early enough to give the upload checks time to run. Use the file you intend to stream; checking a different edit will not screen changes made afterward.
- Open the upload’s Checks page. Review the Copyright result and any issue or claimed segment shown. YouTube’s upload check searches for copyrighted content submitted to its system.
- Review any match before deciding what to do. Inspect the claim details and the identified material. Depending on your rights and circumstances, you may remove or replace the material, confirm that you have permission, or dispute the claim where appropriate. A match alone does not establish that your use is unlawful.
- Wait for the check to finish if you want its result before publishing. YouTube says checks can take time and may continue in the background. You can publish while they are running, but then the screening is unfinished.
- Use the reviewed file as your stream source. Treat the completed check as a useful screening step, not a guarantee against a later claim or live interruption.
- After the stream, inspect the archive if one was created. YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived livestream are made after the stream is complete.
The upload-check steps are YouTube’s documented workflow; uploading the final stream file early is a practical precaution because checks may take time.
What the upload check does—and does not—tell you
The Checks page screens a prerecorded upload for potential copyright issues before publication. Its result is not final. Future manual claims or changes to video settings can affect the outcome, and the check does not promise that the later livestream or its archive will be free of claims.
Keep the two processes separate: an upload check concerns the video file in the upload flow; live-stream scanning happens while you are broadcasting. A completed, clean upload check is not advance approval for every use of the material.

What happens if YouTube finds copyrighted content during a livestream?
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If it identifies a match, YouTube may display a placeholder image and warn the streamer. If the content continues, the stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. This live scan is separate from the prerecorded upload’s Checks page.
If YouTube archives the stream, a Content ID claim may be made after the stream ends. That is why checking the source file first cannot establish that the eventual archive will have no claim.

How to interpret a Content ID claim
A claim can block a video, monetize it (sometimes sharing revenue with the uploader), or track its viewership. Its effect may differ by country or region. A Content ID claim is distinct from a copyright removal request and a copyright strike.
To inspect a claim on an existing upload, go to YouTube Studio > Content, use the filter bar and choose Claims, then find the video and check the Restrictions column. Select See details to review information such as the claimant and the content identified.

Do not assume a match automatically means infringement. Permission or an applicable copyright exception may be relevant, but whether either applies depends on the specific use and circumstances. Review the claim and your rights before choosing whether to remove material or dispute it.
Upload Checks, live scanning, and partner matching are different
| Workflow | When it runs | Who it is for | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio upload Checks | During the prerecorded video’s upload, before publication if you wait for completion | Regular upload workflow | Screens for potential copyright issues; results are not final. |
| YouTube live-stream scanning | While a stream is live | All live streams | May warn the streamer, show a placeholder, or interrupt or terminate a stream when third-party content is identified. |
| Live Content ID matching | In real time | Eligible partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, subject to eligibility and rights conditions | Matches copies of live streams; it is not the ordinary creator’s pre-stream file-check workflow. |
Should you use an unlisted or private upload as a test?
Changing visibility to private or unlisted does not replace the Checks page or exempt a video from YouTube review. YouTube says private and unlisted videos may still be reviewed for copyright and other mechanisms. An unlisted video can also be viewed and reshared by anyone who has its link.
