If your YouTube live stream keeps disconnecting from a VPS in India, first check the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and match its timestamp to your encoder and VPS logs. Then verify the YouTube stream URL and key, confirm your encoder settings, and measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS. The available evidence does not show that India, a particular data center, or RTMP is inherently the cause; diagnose the failing link before changing providers or lowering quality.
Find out what is disconnecting before changing settings
A stream can fail because of an incorrect destination or key, incompatible encoder settings, insufficient outbound capacity, or an interruption in the network path. These causes need different fixes. YouTube’s Live Control Room reports stream status and specific error messages; compare those messages with encoder reconnect errors and VPS network events at the same time. YouTube’s stream metrics guidance explains how to inspect live-stream metrics.
- Write down the disconnect time and copy the complete stream-health message.
- Check the encoder log for errors or reconnect attempts at that time.
- Check VPS system and network logs for interface resets, route changes, or other outbound-connectivity interruptions.
- Keep the evidence together before making one change at a time. A matching network interruption points toward the path; a key or encoder error points toward configuration or authentication. These clues narrow the diagnosis but do not, by themselves, prove which company or network segment caused it.
Do not infer that an India-based VPS is at fault just because it is in India. The relevant question is whether the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest destination remains reliable during the failure window.
Verify the YouTube destination and stream key
The stream URL is the destination for the feed; the stream key identifies and authorizes the stream. Confirm that the encoder is using the URL and corresponding key shown in the relevant YouTube live-stream settings. YouTube describes how to manage these values in its live stream settings guidance.

- Check for a stale or mismatched stream key, especially if the live-stream setup was changed.
- If the encoder reports an error starting the stream, YouTube recommends generating a new stream key and updating the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.
- Treat the key like a password: do not post it in a forum, screenshot, or publicly shared log. Redact it before sharing diagnostics.
Match RTMP or RTMPS settings to the encoder and stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video encoding, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Make sure the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate configured in the encoder agree with the stream you intend to send. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current requirements.
H.264 bitrate reference values
The following are YouTube’s published recommended H.264 bitrates for these formats. They are recommendations for the selected format, not proof that a VPS can sustain the rate.

| Ingest format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube publishes different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. Check the official settings page for the codec and format actually selected; settings can change over time.
Check whether the VPS can sustain the stream bitrate
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom, and recommends a reliable network. It warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Identify the encoder’s configured total bitrate, including video and audio.
- Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS itself, preferably toward the relevant YouTube ingest destination and during the times the stream tends to fail.
- Compare the measured capacity with the configured bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. A brief peak or a speed test from your home computer does not establish what the VPS can continuously send.
- Look for packet loss or interruptions in the VPS-side connection evidence and correlate them with the stream-health and encoder logs.
- If the path is stable but capacity is too close to the stream rate, lower the encoder bitrate or select a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. If capacity is adequate on average but the connection drops, investigate interruptions rather than lowering quality automatically.
The official guidance does not specify a packet-loss threshold or identify a particular India-region routing fix. A local desktop speed test also cannot establish the capacity of a remote VPS’s outbound route.
Preflight the stream and test recovery
Before relying on a long broadcast, test the actual encoder, media, settings, and VPS route. YouTube recommends a test with movement and audio similar to the intended event, monitoring stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover in advance. Its instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Streaming tips.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Start a test stream with representative video motion and audio, then verify that Live Control Room reports healthy delivery.
- Watch stream health and note whether any warning coincides with encoder or VPS events.
- Test the backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, as YouTube advises, and confirm the backup can take over using its own tested configuration.
- Consider whether the backup shares the same VPS provider, host, or network route. A second encoder on the same failing path may not protect against a provider or route outage.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder cannot start the stream or reports a key-related error | Stream URL and matching key; whether the key was changed | Generate a new key in YouTube live settings, update the encoder, and keep the key private. |
| Stream health reports delivery or connection trouble | Encoder and VPS logs at the same timestamp; sustained VPS outbound capacity | Measure from the VPS, check for interruptions, and ensure the target bitrate leaves the recommended headroom. |
| Disconnects occur at a high bitrate or only at a demanding format | Configured total bitrate versus sustained outbound capacity; codec-specific recommendation | Correct the codec/format settings or reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then repeat the test. |
| Settings appear valid, but disconnects recur at irregular times | VPS network/interface events and route behavior during each failure | Collect timestamps and route/capacity observations for the VPS host; avoid attributing the issue to India without path evidence. |
| Primary encoder fails and backup does not recover the stream | Whether failover was tested and whether backup shares the primary’s network path | Run a controlled failover test before the next broadcast and use an independent source or network path where possible. |
