For YouTube live ingest, 1440p needs more bitrate than 1080p at the same frame rate and codec. At 60 fps, YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1440p and 12 Mbps at 1080p; with H.264, the recommendations are 34 Mbps and 17 Mbps. At 30 fps, the corresponding recommendations are 15 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265, or 21 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Choose the resolution your connection can sustain reliably: 1440p is not guaranteed to look better for every source or viewer.

1440p vs. 1080p: YouTube’s recommended live bitrates

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended settings for live-stream ingest, checked October 3, 2026. They depend on both frame rate and codec, so a resolution alone is not enough to choose a bitrate.

Live ingest setting AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate Minimum: AV1 or H.265 Minimum: H.264
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps 5 Mbps 7 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 5 Mbps

Minimums are not the recommended targets. YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives the figures above; use the column matching the codec your encoder actually outputs. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Which resolution should you choose?

Choose 1440p when the source and connection support it

1440p provides a higher-resolution input, but it also calls for more upload bandwidth at a comparable frame rate and codec. It can be a reasonable choice when your original content is detailed enough to benefit and your connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate without interruptions. The bitrate table is an ingest guide, not evidence that every viewer will see a perceptible improvement.

Choose 1080p when reliability or bandwidth matters more

1080p has lower recommended bitrate requirements at the same frame rate and codec. If your upload connection fluctuates or cannot reliably sustain the 1440p target, choosing 1080p is preferable to pursuing a higher resolution that produces an unstable stream. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions.

Match frame rate to the content

At either resolution, 60 fps has a higher recommended bitrate than 30 fps for the same codec. Compare settings with frame rate held constant; 1440p60 versus 1080p30 changes two variables, not just resolution.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live

  1. Check the outgoing codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live encoding. Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec the encoder actually sends.
  2. Set resolution and frame rate. Select the intended 1440p or 1080p output and 30 or 60 fps. YouTube’s cited guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
  3. Use constant bitrate (CBR). This is YouTube’s recommended rate-control setting for the live encoder.
  4. Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  5. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection to its ingest server.
  6. For SDR, use square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 as specified in YouTube’s advanced guidance. For HDR, YouTube identifies H.265 as the recommended codec in these settings and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Exact control names and where they appear vary by encoder. YouTube’s guidance does not require a particular encoder, webcam, capture card, or network device. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide for its current specifications.

Check whether your connection can sustain the setting

YouTube advises choosing a quality that will result in a reliable stream on your internet connection and recommends running an upload speed test. Its cited guidance does not specify one universal upload-speed safety margin for every connection. A speed-test result alone also cannot establish that the connection will stay consistent throughout a stream.

Live bitrate is different from upload bitrate

Do not use YouTube’s uploaded-video encoding table to configure a live encoder. For example, the upload guidance lists 1440p at 16 Mbps for standard frame rates and 24 Mbps for high frame rates, and 1080p at 8 and 12 Mbps. Those are upload encoding recommendations, not the codec-specific live-ingest recommendations above. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

Latency and playback tradeoffs

Resolution and bitrate do not determine the whole viewing experience. YouTube explains that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. If live interaction is important, consider that tradeoff when choosing the stream’s latency setting; prioritize a stable viewing experience when immediate interaction is not essential. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Troubleshoot common quality problems

The stream buffers, drops frames, or loses health

Likely issue: The connection or encoder cannot sustain the chosen settings consistently. What to do: Check stream-health messages, verify the outgoing bitrate and codec, and test at a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Select a setting that remains reliable during representative motion and audio.

The picture looks soft despite a high resolution setting

Likely issue: A high resolution label does not guarantee that the source contains more detail or that every viewer receives a visibly sharper version. YouTube transcodes for different playback devices and networks. What to do: Check the source quality and confirm that the encoder is actually sending the intended resolution, codec, and bitrate.

The configured bitrate does not match the recommendation

Likely issue: The encoder is using a different codec or frame rate than assumed, or a minimum value has been mistaken for the recommended value. What to do: Confirm the actual output codec and frame rate, then refer to the matching row and column in the table.

Viewers report buffering even though the stream is live

Likely issue: Playback conditions and latency settings affect the audience experience as well as the ingest configuration. What to do: Review the latency tradeoff in YouTube’s stream settings and avoid choosing lower latency without considering its potential for more buffering.
