For a YouTube Live stream at 720p and 60 frames per second using H.264 in OBS, set the output to 1280×720 at 60 FPS, use CBR at 8,000 Kbps, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube lists 3,000 Kbps as the minimum for this format, but 8,000 Kbps is its recommended target. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the combined video and audio bitrate, then test the stream before going live.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 720p60

Setting Recommended value Where to set it in OBS
Output resolution 1280×720 Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution
Frame rate 60 FPS Settings → Video → Common FPS Value
Video encoder H.264 Settings → Output → Streaming
Rate control CBR Settings → Output → Streaming
Video bitrate 8,000 Kbps recommended; 3,000 Kbps minimum Settings → Output → Streaming
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Settings → Output → Streaming
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Encoder or audio settings, depending on your OBS setup
Stereo audio 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz Audio settings, depending on your OBS setup
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended Set or select the protocol in your YouTube/OBS stream connection configuration

The bitrate figures apply to H.264 at 720p60 in YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The 3,000 Kbps minimum is a lower bound, not the target for recommended quality. YouTube also supports H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 ingest, but bitrate recommendations depend on the codec; use the guidance for the codec you select rather than applying the H.264 figure automatically. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists the supported codecs, CBR, keyframe interval, audio guidance, and RTMPS recommendation.

Set the video output and frame rate

  1. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube.
  2. Choose the frame rate. Set Common FPS Value to 60. OBS recommends matching this value to the intended output frame rate.
  3. Leave the canvas resolution appropriate for your sources. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange scenes and sources; it does not have to be 1280×720 just because the stream output is 720p. OBS scales the canvas to the output resolution.
  4. Apply the changes and check the preview. Confirm the scene is framed correctly at the scaled output size; text and fine detail can look different after scaling.

Streaming at 60 FPS can put more load on a computer than 30 FPS. OBS advises testing whether the system can keep up. If you see rendering or encoding strain, 30 FPS is a reasonable alternative to test; it changes motion smoothness and is not the same output target as 720p60. OBS Studio’s overview guide explains the canvas/output distinction, frame-rate setting, and system-load consideration.

Set bitrate, rate control, and keyframes

  1. Open Settings → Output → Streaming. Select the stream encoder that supports H.264 on your system. There is no universally best hardware or software encoder, so choose based on your hardware’s compatibility and performance.
  2. Set Rate Control to CBR. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate for live streaming.
  3. Set Video Bitrate to 8000 Kbps. That is YouTube’s recommended H.264 target for 720p60. If your upload capacity cannot sustain it, YouTube lists 3000 Kbps as the minimum; lowering bitrate may reduce image quality.
  4. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  5. Set audio encoding and bitrate. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.

Menu labels or encoder choices can vary with OBS version and platform, but the target values above follow YouTube’s guidance. Do not select NVENC, Quick Sync, AMD AMF, or x264 solely on a generic recommendation: the right option depends on the available hardware and whether encoding competes with your other workload.

Check upload bandwidth and stream health

Your connection must carry the total outgoing bitrate, including audio—not just the video bitrate. YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run a speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, and leave headroom for normal network variation rather than treating the result as a guaranteed sustained rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips for bandwidth preparation.

  • Use a stable connection and check that its available upload capacity exceeds your combined video and audio bitrate.
  • During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health messages instead of relying only on OBS’s local preview.
  • If the stream stutters or drops, check both system load and upload stability before concluding that resolution alone is the problem.

Configure YouTube Live and test before the event

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and connect OBS using the stream key and ingest configuration shown for your stream. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or expose it in a public recording or screenshot.
  2. Use automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to select resolution manually in YouTube, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution, as YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies.
  3. Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
  4. Run a test stream before the real event. Include movement and audio similar to what you expect during the broadcast, then verify the picture, sound, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
  5. Review YouTube’s stream health during the test. Resolve warnings before the event rather than assuming OBS’s configured values guarantee a stable stream.

Troubleshoot common 720p60 problems

Symptom Likely areas to check What to do
Stream stutters or drops frames Computer load, encoder load, or unstable upload capacity Check OBS performance and YouTube stream health; test the system at 60 FPS; verify sustained upload capacity. If needed, test 30 FPS or a lower bitrate, understanding that bitrate reduction can reduce image quality.
YouTube reports connection or stream-health warnings Upload bandwidth, network stability, or stream configuration Compare available upload capacity with the total video-plus-audio bitrate, verify the YouTube/OBS connection settings, and run a representative test.
Video looks soft or blocky Bitrate may be below the recommended target, or scaling may affect detail For H.264 720p60, confirm the bitrate is 8,000 Kbps if the connection can sustain it; check that Output (Scaled) Resolution is 1280×720 and inspect the scene at that size.
Stream fails to match intended resolution or frame rate OBS output values or YouTube’s manual stream settings Confirm OBS Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value; use automatic detection in YouTube by default. For manual selection, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
Audio is missing or sounds wrong Audio routing, encoder, or audio format settings Check that the intended audio source reaches OBS and that the stream uses an accepted AAC or MP3 codec; YouTube’s advanced stereo guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than operate OBS on a computer, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live feed.
