YouTube recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. Its recommendations are global, not India-specific: the sustained upload connection at your streaming location determines what will work reliably.
A sensible H.264 starting profile is CBR, RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval and 1080p30 at 14 Mbps—or 1080p60 at 17 Mbps if you have the upload capacity. If your connection fluctuates or is shared, step down to a profile it can sustain rather than using all of its measured upload speed.
Recommended YouTube live bitrates by resolution and codec
Use YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations below, not bitrate figures intended for uploading finished videos. Mbps means megabits per second. YouTube labels its figures as minimum and recommended rates; the recommended rate is the practical target for the selected profile, while a minimum is not a quality target.

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. The same page lists higher targets: for H.264, 21 Mbps at 1440p30, 34 Mbps at 1440p60, 42 Mbps at 2160p30 and 50 Mbps at 2160p60; for AV1 or H.265, 15 Mbps, 24 Mbps, 30 Mbps and 35 Mbps respectively. Use those higher-resolution profiles only if the source, encoder and sustained upload connection can support them.

Choosing between 1080p and 720p
At H.264, moving from 1080p30 to 1080p60 raises YouTube’s recommended bitrate from 14 to 17 Mbps and increases temporal detail. A 720p30 or 720p60 H.264 stream has an 8 Mbps recommended target. Choose the clearest profile your connection can sustain consistently; a lower stable stream is preferable to a higher one that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.
Choosing a codec
H.264 is a broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1, with different recommended rates. Select either newer codec only if your encoder and full workflow support it. The bitrate table depends on the codec actually being sent.

Encoder settings for a stable stream
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data as it travels to and through Google’s servers.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to encoder and workflow compatibility.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, use AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

How much upload speed to reserve
YouTube says the total outbound bitrate of your stream must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. It also advises accounting for the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams where applicable. Measure upload—not download—capacity: download speed is often higher, and other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what remains for the broadcast.

Calculate a practical target
For a 14 Mbps stream with no separate backup feed, applying YouTube’s 20% margin means planning for about 17.5 Mbps of consistently available upload capacity (14 ÷ 0.8). That is a calculation from YouTube’s recommended margin, not a guaranteed ISP speed or an India-wide requirement. If you send a backup feed, add its bitrate to the primary stream before allowing for headroom.
Test where the stream will run
- Measure outbound capacity at the actual venue and connection the stream will use, rather than relying on a household plan’s advertised speed or a download test.
- Repeat tests at representative busy times and with the normal devices and network activity present.
- Test the encoder with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube Help advises that tests should include audio and movement like the planned stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test. A brief speed-test peak does not show whether an always-on connection will remain steady.
- If upload varies, lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate until the stream has room to absorb normal fluctuations.

What changes—and does not change—in India
YouTube’s cited bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, not the country of origin. The official guidance does not specify a separate India bitrate, minimum broadband plan, preferred ISP or regional RTMP server choice. For an Indian channel, measure sustained upload at the actual location and account for the provider, local congestion, time of day and shared network use. There is no single nationwide upload-speed figure established by these recommendations.

Protect the stream key
When connecting an encoder, use the stream key in YouTube’s live-stream setup and enter it only in the intended encoder or service. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before resuming.

Plan for the long run
A 24/7 stream depends on more than bitrate: the encoder, power and network connection must keep sending the feed. Test the whole setup for an extended period and monitor stream health instead of assuming a short test proves it will stay stable indefinitely. If YouTube or the network interrupts the feed, confirm the encoder reconnects and the stream is live again.
Do not assume one complete 24-hour archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete archive. If a complete recording matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and maintain an independent local or cloud recording workflow that suits your needs. Troubleshooting bitrate and stream health
- Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth or dropped frames: Check sustained outbound capacity and competing network use. Lower the stream bitrate or resolution, or use a more reliable connection; do not set bitrate at the connection’s full measured peak.
- The selected rate is below the recommended target: A minimum rate is not the quality target. If the connection cannot support the recommended rate with headroom, use a lower-resolution profile with a suitable recommended rate.
- The stream will not connect: Confirm the stream key is current and entered correctly, the selected protocol is supported by the encoder, and the stream is configured in YouTube. Use RTMPS where supported.
- The feed looks poor despite a high bitrate: Check that the encoder’s actual resolution and frame rate match the chosen YouTube table row and that the source itself contains the detail you expect. A bitrate alone does not create detail absent from the source.
- The feed disconnects intermittently: Check upload variation, congestion and shared usage at the time of failure, then retest under those conditions. For a 24/7 service, also check how the encoder handles reconnection.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: Do not rely on automatic archiving to produce one complete 24-hour file; YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior covers streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording workflow if a full record is essential.
