Find both in YouTube Studio: select Create → Go Live, open the Stream tab in Live Control Room, then copy the Stream URL and Stream key from Stream settings. Paste the URL into your encoder’s server or RTMP server field and the key into its separate stream-key field. YouTube displays the standard RTMP URL by default; click the lock icon beside Stream URL to reveal the RTMPS address.
Where to find your YouTube RTMP server URL and stream key
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- At the top right, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you plan to use. If this is your first live stream, edit the stream and create it; if you have streamed before, previous stream settings may load.
- In Stream settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key.
The Stream URL is the destination address (also called the server or ingestion URL); the stream key identifies the stream to YouTube. Use the exact URL and key shown for your stream rather than an example address.
Which value goes in each encoder field?

If your encoder has a built-in YouTube preset, select it and enter the key when prompted. Otherwise, paste the URL and key into the corresponding fields. Names differ between encoders, so look for their server/URL and key fields rather than expecting identical labels.
RTMP or RTMPS: which URL should you use?
YouTube shows ordinary RTMP by default. To reveal the secure RTMPS address, select the lock icon beside the Stream URL field. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; use it only if your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and RTMPS connection help cover the setup and protocol details.

- Use RTMP if that is the protocol your encoder supports.
- Use RTMPS when you want the secure transport and the encoder supports it.
Start a scheduled stream
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder and start sending the stream.
- Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Select Go live there to make the scheduled stream live.
- When finished, end the stream using Live Control Room controls and stop sending from the encoder as directed by YouTube.

Keep your stream key private
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, public support post, or message to someone who does not need it. YouTube’s wording is: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; then replace the old key in your encoder. Troubleshoot a missing preview or failed connection
- No preview or connection: Check that the complete Stream URL is in the encoder’s server field and the key is in the separate key field. Confirm you selected the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- SSL certificate error: Make sure you are using the RTMPS URL revealed by the lock icon, not the ordinary RTMP URL. If the URL is correct and the SSL error persists, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
- Connection timeout: Recheck the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS if you selected the secure URL.
- Bad-key error: Generate or select a valid key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it; only channel owners or managers can do this.
Use the URL displayed in your own Live Control Room rather than substituting an illustrative address from a help page. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance has additional connection checks.
