If YouTube Live Control Room’s health check stays on “Checking,” start by reading the full stream status and any error text, then verify that your encoder is sending a healthy stream and test your outbound connection. YouTube’s help pages explain stream health and general troubleshooting, but do not document “stuck on checking” as a distinct error or prescribe a guaranteed fix. Treat it as a symptom to investigate—not proof that a particular device, key, or setting is at fault.
1. Read the full status before changing anything
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and inspect the complete stream status and any displayed error message. YouTube says stream status includes specific errors and instructions; Health Indicator messages include timestamps and distinguish critical from moderate errors. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream metrics and status.
The reviewed YouTube help pages do not say how long a normal health check should take or explain what it means when the display remains on “Checking.” They also do not establish that refreshing the page, restarting the stream, changing the key, or buying equipment will resolve that exact display. Record the wording and timestamp before troubleshooting so you can tell whether anything changes.
2. Check the encoder and its local output
If you are streaming through an encoder, check whether it is running and actively sending to YouTube. Look at the encoder’s preview or local output, its dashboard for errors, and CPU load. If you record a local archive, inspect it for missing audio, frozen video, or other faults. Confirm that the encoder software is current. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks and suggests trying another encoder if the output still has unexplained problems. They are general troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix for a stuck indicator.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
3. Test the outbound connection
If the encoder’s output appears healthy, test the internet connection from the streaming location, especially its ability to send data outward. YouTube identifies connection problems as one possible source of live-stream issues. If a connection test shows trouble, contact your internet service provider. A successful test does not prove that the “Checking” display itself is fixed; continue monitoring the Live Control Room status and any timestamps or errors.
4. Use viewer reports to narrow down where the problem is
Ask affected viewers what they see, what device and connection they are using, and whether you see the same problem in Live Control Room. The pattern can help separate a viewer-side issue from a stream-wide one:

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- One viewer reports an error: YouTube says the cause may be that viewer’s device or internet connection.
- Several viewers on the same network report it: investigate that shared network.
- Viewers on different networks report it: check the encoder and outgoing stream more closely.
These patterns are clues, not definitive diagnoses. YouTube recommends asking affected viewers about their steps and checking whether the creator sees the same error. See its troubleshooting guidance.
5. Verify the stream’s actual settings
Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and rate-control mode with YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health and messages while it runs. Its published guidance calls for a two-second keyframe frequency and constant bitrate encoding. Confirm the current values on YouTube’s page before making changes, since supported recommendations can change.

| Output mode | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not a diagnosis of a health check that remains on “Checking.” YouTube’s settings guidance also covers RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion codecs.
6. Reset a stream key only for a separate key problem
A stuck “Checking” display alone is not a documented reason to reset your stream key. YouTube recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder when the encoder reports an error starting. If you do reset it, update the encoder with the replacement key in Live Control Room; otherwise, the encoder may keep trying to use the old one. YouTube describes key management in its encoder settings guidance. Treat a suspected compromised key as a separate security issue.

7. Report a persistent problem to YouTube
If the status remains stuck after the checks, report the continuing live-stream problem to YouTube. Include the exact status or error text, when it began, whether the encoder is sending, the encoder and connection checks you completed, and whether viewers on different networks reproduce the issue. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance supports reporting continuing problems, but the reviewed help pages do not describe a special escalation path for this exact interface state.
