Short answer: 60 fps captures more frames each second, which can make fast movement look smoother, but it generally calls for more upload bitrate at 1080p and above. For mostly static scenes or a limited upload connection, 30 fps can be a sensible choice. The right setting depends on resolution and codec as well as frame rate: YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, retrieved in 2026, show that 60 fps does not always require more bitrate.
What changes when you choose 30 fps or 60 fps?
Frame rate is the number of frames sent each second. At the same resolution and codec, 60 fps provides twice as many temporal samples as 30 fps. That can make rapid gameplay, sports, and camera pans appear smoother. A talking head, presentation, or largely static screen share may not benefit as much from the extra frames.
Frame rate alone does not guarantee a particular image quality. Resolution, codec, bitrate, encoder performance, and connection stability all matter. YouTube’s published bitrate table gives recommended ingest settings, not a controlled comparison proving how much better one frame rate looks at a fixed bitrate.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations by resolution and codec
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion settings in Mbps, retrieved in 2026. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube’s labels; the recommendations are starting points, not universal quality thresholds. Choose the row for your resolution and frame rate, then the column for the codec you will send.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
At 1080p, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps; at 60 fps, the recommendations rise to 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps, respectively. At 720p, the recommended values are unchanged between 30 and 60 fps: 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. So “60 fps always needs more bitrate” is too broad: the recommendation depends on the resolution and codec.
These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest settings, not a promise about the bitrate each viewer will receive. YouTube says it transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions.

How to choose a frame rate and bitrate
Choose based on motion
- Consider 60 fps for fast gameplay, sports, or frequent camera movement when a smoother presentation matters to you and your upload connection can sustain the selected setting.
- Consider 30 fps for talking heads, screen shares, presentations, or other relatively static scenes, especially if reducing the recommended bitrate helps you use a more reliable setting.
This is a practical motion-based choice, not a YouTube guarantee of a visible quality improvement. The published recommendations do not quantify how 30 fps and 60 fps compare at the same bitrate.
Match resolution, codec, and frame rate
- Decide on your target resolution and frame rate first.
- Check which codec your encoder will send: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding.
- Use the matching recommended bitrate in the table as your starting point. Do not substitute upload-video guidance: live ingestion has its own table.
- Run an upload speed test and select a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube does not specify a universal extra upload-margin percentage.
- Before an important event, test with representative movement and audio, then check stream health and messages while live.
Encoder settings that matter beyond frame rate
- Protocol and codecs: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS streaming and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 encoder options.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame-rate ceiling: The listed live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
For an uploaded video rather than a live stream, use YouTube’s separate upload encoding guidance. It groups 24/25/30 fps as standard frame rates and 48/50/60 fps as high frame rates; for example, its SDR 1080p upload recommendations are 8 Mbps for standard rates and 12 Mbps for high rates. Those upload figures are not live-ingestion recommendations. YouTube also recommends encoding an upload at the frame rate at which it was recorded.

Test before you rely on the stream
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate planned for the event, and include the sort of motion and sound viewers will encounter. During the event, YouTube says to monitor stream health and review messages. If the connection struggles, reduce the setting to one it can sustain reliably rather than treating the recommended figure as a requirement at any cost.
Common 30 fps and 60 fps streaming problems
- The stream buffers or becomes unstable: The selected bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain consistently. Run an upload speed test and try a lower, reliable setting; retest using the actual stream configuration.
- You used an upload bitrate table for a live stream: Upload encoding recommendations and live-ingestion recommendations are separate. Use YouTube’s live table for a broadcast.
- The table’s value does not match your encoder: Check that you selected the correct resolution, frame rate, and codec column. A 1080p H.264 stream and a 1080p AV1 stream have different recommendations.
- Keyframes are too far apart: Set the interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- You expect every viewer to receive your ingest bitrate: YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for playback. The encoder bitrate is not a guaranteed viewer playback bitrate.
- The test looks unlike the event: Repeat the test with representative movement and audio; a static test image may not reflect the actual stream conditions.
