To stream a file to YouTube Live at 4K 60fps with FFmpeg, encode it at 3840×2160 and 60 frames per second, use a constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and send the output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps video for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1 at 2160p60. These are recommendations—not a guarantee your computer can encode that fast or your connection can sustain it.
Recommended settings for 4K 60fps
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies the following for a 2160p60 stream. The video bitrate does not include audio or network overhead, so leave upload headroom and test your connection rather than provisioning it to exactly the video bitrate. YouTube’s encoder settings also recommend choosing settings your connection can sustain.
| Setting | Recommended target or guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840×2160 at up to 60 fps |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps; H.265/HEVC or AV1: 35 Mbps |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest | RTMPS recommended |
| SDR picture settings | Progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps |
For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. YouTube’s 4K live stream is optimized for normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable. Codec availability and real-time encoding performance depend on your FFmpeg build and hardware.
Stream a local video file with FFmpeg
This is an illustrative H.264 template for a file—not a universal drop-in command. Replace the input filename and both ingest placeholders with your own values. It assumes your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and that the file has a video track. The optional audio mapping permits a file with no audio; add an audio source or remove the optional mapping if you need audio and the input lacks it.

What to change and why
input.mp4is the local media file.-remakes FFmpeg read a file at its native rate to simulate live playback. FFmpeg warns against using a reduced read rate on actual capture or live inputs because it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream;-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if present. Explicit mapping avoids relying on automatic stream selection. Check the file’s tracks if the result has no sound.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 software encoder.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding demand; it does not guarantee that your machine can encode 4K60 in real time.-b:v 50Msets the video target to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 2160p60.-maxrateand-bufsizeconfigure rate-control limits and buffering for this example. Encoder behavior varies; verify the actual output and YouTube’s health indicators rather than assuming flags guarantee a precise network bitrate.-r 60requests 60 fps.-g 120and-keyint_min 120correspond to a 120-frame, two-second GOP at 60 fps;-sc_threshold 0disables scene-change keyframes that could disrupt a fixed cadence. Match frame-rate conversion and keyframe settings to your intended output cadence.-pix_fmt yuv420prequests a common 8-bit pixel format for SDR. Keep color and scan settings consistent with your source and the intended Rec. 709 progressive output.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100selects AAC audio at YouTube’s recommended stereo bitrate and sample rate. The mapping does not force stereo; confirm the source’s channel layout if stereo is required.-f flvpackages the output for RTMP(S). The destination must be the ingest URL and key supplied for your stream; the placeholders above are not a working endpoint.
Find and protect your ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Use the RTMPS ingest details YouTube provides. The protocol is RTMP carried over an SSL connection; see the FFmpeg protocol documentation. YouTube documents primary and backup ingestion addresses and stream health in its LiveStreams API reference.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, shared logs, and articles. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; see YouTube’s live stream settings help.
Choose a codec that fits your setup
| Codec | YouTube’s 2160p60 video recommendation | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | The example command uses H.264 with libx264. Confirm the encoder is present and can keep up with real-time 4K60. |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | Use an FFmpeg build with a suitable HEVC encoder. Hardware encoder names and options vary by build and system; inspect the encoders available on your installation before adapting the command. |
| AV1 | 35 Mbps | Use only if your installed encoder and receiving setup support it. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
The lower recommended bitrate for H.265/HEVC and AV1 does not mean those codecs are automatically the right choice. Consider whether your encoder can produce 4K60 in real time, whether your playback and delivery requirements support the codec, and whether you need HDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265.
Validate the stream before broadcasting
- Confirm the outgoing picture is 3840×2160 at 60 fps and uses the codec you chose. Verify the keyframe interval is two seconds or less than four seconds.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static or silent clip. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check that your sustained upload capacity has headroom above the video bitrate for audio and transport overhead. If it is unstable, lower the stream target or choose settings your connection can reliably maintain.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health while testing. YouTube documents diagnostics including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and keyframe/GOP problems. Its guidance also says, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: The installed build may not include
libx264or the chosen alternative. Check the encoders available in that build, then select an encoder it actually provides. - The stream starts but YouTube reports low bitrate: Check upload stability and actual output bitrate; leave room for audio and protocol overhead. A configured target is not proof the connection can sustain it.
- YouTube reports a frame-rate mismatch: Confirm that the file, output settings, and actual encoded output agree on cadence. Change
-rand keyframe interval together if you change the output frame rate. - YouTube reports keyframe or GOP issues: At 60 fps, set a two-second interval to 120 frames and make sure the encoder is not producing intervals longer than YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- The stream has no audio: Check that the input contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg mapped it. The
?makes audio selection optional; it does not create an audio track. - Frames drop or encoding falls behind: Your system may not encode this source at 4K60 in real time with the selected encoder and preset. Try an available hardware encoder after checking its supported options, or reduce the output demands.
- The broadcast does not connect: Recheck the account-specific RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and ensure the key has not been reset or exposed.
When HLS is a better fit
HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion workflow, not a one-flag replacement for the FLV/RTMPS command above. YouTube specifies M2TS multiplexing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and up to 60 fps for HLS. It recommends segments between one and four seconds, with a maximum duration of five seconds. Because HLS is segment-based, it usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Follow the distinct YouTube HLS ingestion guide if your encoder or workflow requires HLS.
