You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream of science lessons by using OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play local lesson files in a loop, then sending the feed to a YouTube encoder stream. You’ll need to enable live streaming for your channel, install VLC, clear the rights to every lesson and audio track, and plan how to monitor the computer, power, and internet connection. OBS’s documented playlist workflow uses media files; it does not establish direct playback of a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. See YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Science lesson files stored locally and arranged in the order you want them to play. Check that your OBS source can open each file before launch.
- Permission to stream every video, image, music track, and other included material. Owning a copy or having a license does not always prevent a live interruption; YouTube says licensed third-party material may still require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- A reliable computer, power supply, and internet connection, plus a plan to monitor them. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a universal computer configuration or promise uninterrupted operation.
How do I loop a playlist on a YouTube live stream?
Use a media-file playlist in OBS rather than assuming YouTube’s hosted playlist URL can be passed into the VLC Video source. The OBS instructions cover a list of media files and a Loop Playlist control, not direct ingestion of a YouTube playlist.
1. Create the encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s prompts for the stream’s title, visibility, and other details.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as a combination of the stream’s address and password: keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed. The steps are documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
2. Build the lesson playlist in OBS
- Install VLC before configuring the source. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the local lesson media files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order. Verify that each item is a file you are entitled to broadcast.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final item.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the lesson video displays correctly and that its audio is audible at an appropriate level. If a lesson should be silent or use separate audio, check that arrangement in the preview rather than assuming the source will behave as intended.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube and test
- In OBS’s stream settings, select the YouTube service if available, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. If the service configuration asks for a server and key separately, paste each into its corresponding field.
- Start streaming from OBS and inspect the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or beginning the scheduled stream.
- Check that both picture and sound are working, the intended lesson is playing, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate; shared network use and connection disruptions can still affect delivery. See Streaming tips.
- Once the test is satisfactory, start or schedule the public broadcast in YouTube as appropriate. Keep Live Control Room available for stream-health checks.
Can I stream a YouTube playlist 24/7?
The documented OBS approach described here loops local media files. It does not establish that OBS’s VLC Video source can ingest a YouTube-hosted playlist URL. If your lessons exist only as a hosted playlist, obtain the original files and the rights needed to broadcast them, then add those files to OBS; do not treat a public YouTube playlist link as a supported input based on these instructions.
Rights, live interruptions, and lesson content
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream, interrupt it, or terminate it. This can apply even when you have a license if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Clear rights for all lesson visuals, recordings, music, and other included material, including material embedded in slides or video clips.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Review Copyright issues with live streams and Livestream terms and conditions. Educational subject matter alone does not establish permission to rebroadcast third-party material.
Plan for a genuinely continuous broadcast
A looping playlist can continue only while the playback and streaming setup remains operational. With OBS running locally, the computer, power, VLC/OBS playback, and network all need to remain available. Assign someone to monitor stream health and respond to outages, or establish an operational monitoring plan that accounts for those failure points. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the bitrate total, but that recommendation is not a guarantee against congestion or connection failures.

Decide how you will handle the recording as well as the live feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous 24-hour stream will yield one complete archive. If complete replays matter, verify YouTube’s current archive limits and plan stream boundaries accordingly; test and verify any local recording you intend to keep.
OBS software or a hardware encoder?
A hardware encoder is optional, not a prerequisite. YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders and maintains a verified encoder list. That list describes the CamStreamer App as supporting continuous 24/7 and scheduled streams, but it does not by itself establish whether a particular device suits your lesson files, workflow, or operating conditions. OBS is a reasonable software starting point for a local media playlist.

Before buying hardware, check compatibility with your chosen files and YouTube, whether the setup supports unattended continuous operation, what monitoring it requires, and the total cost. YouTube’s cited material does not establish a specific encoder model or computer specification for every resolution and duration. A dedicated device can change the operational setup; it does not remove the need to check channel eligibility, content rights, or stream health.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
OBS does not show the VLC Video source
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC and try adding the source again.
The playlist will not advance or repeat
Confirm that the files are present in the VLC Video source playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. Test with a short sequence before relying on the setup for an extended broadcast.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Check that you copied the current server URL and stream key for the intended stream and entered them in the correct OBS fields. A stream key is sensitive; if it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Confirm that the stream is started in OBS and inspect Live Control Room.
The preview has no picture or sound
Verify the selected scene and source, test that the media files play locally, and inspect the audio meter and output in OBS. Confirm the same feed in YouTube’s preview before starting the public broadcast.
The stream health is poor or the broadcast disconnects
Check the available upload bandwidth against the stream’s total bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use where possible, and check the computer, power, and connection. A network interruption can still break the feed; restore the encoder connection and confirm YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on it again.
YouTube interrupts the lesson feed
Review YouTube’s copyright notice and identify the matching material. Remove or replace content you lack rights to stream, or work with the rights holder on the required authorization and Content ID allowlisting. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.

How do I set up OBS to stream a repeating playlist?
In brief: enable live streaming in YouTube Studio, create an encoder stream, install VLC, add your local lesson files to OBS’s VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, connect OBS with the YouTube server URL and stream key, then test the preview and monitor the broadcast. The detailed sequence and checks above cover the parts most likely to stop a 24/7 setup from working as intended.
