What NU7 is expected to change
Shorter target block spacing, with issuance adjustments
The Zcash Foundation says NU7 is planned to reduce target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Faster blocks do not, by themselves, mean three times as much ZEC is issued each day: the Foundation says the block subsidy and remaining halving intervals are adjusted so daily issuance remains unchanged. A reserve for transaction fees
The Foundation describes a Network Sustainability Mechanism under which 60% of transaction fees are removed from circulation into a reserve, while miners retain 40%. A small, predictable portion of the reserve is reissued per block. These are the mechanism’s described allocations, not a claim that block rewards or daily issuance rise with the faster schedule. Shielded transaction limits
The release candidate implements limits of 330 Orchard or Ironwood actions, 300 Sapling inputs and outputs, and a shared pool budget of 330; it includes no new Sprout JoinSplits. The Foundation says these limits more than double Orchard protocol throughput and reduce worst-case light-wallet sync load by about 37%. Transaction and infrastructure compatibility
The community timeline says NU7 disables v4 transactions but introduces no new transaction format. It expects no significant effect on wallets in ordinary use, while noting potential effects on full nodes, indexers, and block explorers. Developers should validate compatibility in testnet, where the release announcement flags changes to databases, library APIs, RPC, block templates, and coinbase behavior. Public-testnet operators
Upgrade before the expected testnet activation height, 4,465,026, if you need to remain on the NU7 testnet chain. Report issues through the project’s current testing channels so they can inform the later mainnet decision.

Mainnet operators
The Foundation’s October 2 announcement says: “Mainnet operators do not need to do anything yet: no Mainnet activation height has been set, and this is a release candidate, not a stable release.” Do not treat Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 as a mainnet upgrade instruction. Zcash Foundation announcement
Miners, pools, and infrastructure developers
Miners and pools should consult the release notes before testing integrations affected by block-template or coinbase changes. Wallet, indexer, and explorer developers should use testnet to check the announced API, RPC, and database changes before any mainnet decision.

Everyday Zcash users
The timeline does not describe an immediate wallet migration requirement. It says no new transaction format is introduced and expects ordinary wallet use not to be significantly affected; the larger compatibility burden is on infrastructure. NU7 timeline
Zebra release-candidate database warning
For Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 specifically, the state database changes to format v29. A compatible v28 database is migrated on first start, and downgrading is not supported. Zebra operators who want a recovery path are instructed to back up the v28 state before starting the candidate. These details apply to this Zebra release candidate, not necessarily to other Zcash clients; follow the current official release instructions for installation and recovery. What the dates do not establish
The October 20 milestone is a decision point, not a promise that mainnet activation will happen on November 5. The mainnet height and final go/no-go decision remain outstanding as of October 3, 2026. Exchange confirmation policies are set by individual exchanges; the official sources cited here do not establish a universal change in confirmation requirements.
