For a prerecorded event replay, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and Normal latency. Use that setup only if your upload connection can sustain the bitrate: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, but a stable, lower-bitrate stream is better than one that repeatedly drops frames. Most importantly, a single broadcast lasting 24 hours is not a safe way to preserve a complete YouTube archive: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter broadcasts and keep a local recording if the replay matters.

Recommended OBS settings at a glance

Setting Starting choice When to change it
Output resolution 1920×1080 Use a lower output if the source or stable upload cannot support 1080p reliably. Do not upscale a lower-resolution source to create detail.
Frame rate 30 fps Use 60 fps when the replay has motion that benefits from it and the connection can sustain the higher bitrate.
Rate control CBR Keep the bitrate constant for a live ingest.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video codec H.264 AV1 or H.265/HEVC are options when your encoder and hardware support them. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265 and does not support AV1 for HDR.
Protocol RTMPS Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it because stream data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps Check that sound remains audible and continuous, including at loop joins.
YouTube latency Normal Choose lower latency only when real-time interaction justifies the potential trade-off in buffering or features.

These are a starting point, not a guarantee of quality or reliability. YouTube’s encoder guidance and available codec support can change; confirm the current settings in YouTube Help and your OBS encoder before going live.

Set OBS video resolution and frame rate

Choose an output that matches the replay

In OBS, the Base (Canvas) Resolution is the working area where you arrange sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution sent to YouTube. Keep the source’s aspect ratio intact, then preview the scene to catch cropping, stretching, or black bars. OBS explains the distinction in its OBS Studio overview.

For a typical event recording, 1920×1080 at 30 fps is a sensible first target if the source contains that detail and your internet connection can reliably carry the required bitrate. A static stage, lecture, or worship service replay often gains little from 60 fps. Choose 60 fps for fast movement only when the original footage supports it and the connection has enough sustained upload capacity.

Use the bitrate YouTube recommends for your codec

YouTube’s published recommended ingestion bitrates are below. They are platform recommendations, not a promise of a particular visual result. Treat the recommended value as a target only if your tested, stable upload can sustain it.

Output AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

YouTube’s table also lists minimums for these output modes: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. A minimum is not a recommended quality target. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance because platform recommendations may change.

Configure OBS output and encoder

Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval

Set the encoder’s rate control to CBR (Constant Bitrate) and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The exact fields and available encoder options vary with your OBS version, operating system, and selected hardware or software encoder, so confirm them in the output settings you actually use.

Select a supported codec and protocol

H.264 is a broadly compatible choice. YouTube also documents AV1 and H.265/HEVC, but whether you can select them depends on your encoder and hardware. For HDR streaming over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Choose RTMPS when available; it encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers, according to YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Check the audio and loop boundary

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. Its stereo guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Listen to the complete replay and pay particular attention to the transition from the end back to the beginning: a gap, abrupt silence, or click can be distracting even when the video stream itself is healthy.

Choose YouTube broadcast controls for unattended playback

Use Normal latency unless interaction requires less delay

Normal latency is the safer default for an unattended replay, where viewers are not relying on near-real-time chat or interaction. Lower latency can increase buffering or affect smoothness. Ultra-low latency also excludes resolutions above 1080p and closed captions. Review YouTube’s current live stream latency and broadcast controls before selecting a mode.

Decide how viewers can pause or rewind

Enable DVR if viewers should pause or rewind while the event is live. DVR does not ensure unlimited rewind or a permanent archive: YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The archive and DVR limits are separate concerns, so check the archive caveat below even if DVR is enabled.

Set auto-start and auto-stop deliberately

Auto-start can begin the broadcast when the encoder connects; auto-stop can end it after the source stops. For a continuous loop, a brief interruption may trigger an automatic stop depending on the broadcast workflow. Test how your event behaves after a disconnect and reconnection, and decide whether you want an automatic handoff or a manual review before ending the broadcast. YouTube’s live broadcast API documentation describes these controls, but not every channel or Studio interface necessarily exposes every API control.

Test visibility and audience settings before the event

Run an unlisted test first. Before the public event, confirm visibility and the audience declaration in YouTube Studio against the actual content and current channel settings. Interface options can vary by account, so do not assume a setting from an older walkthrough is still in the same place.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit

A single 24-hour YouTube live event is not a reliable way to produce a complete replay archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Separately, rewind through DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Enabling recording-from-start or other broadcast settings does not remove that Help Center warning.

If a complete replay is important, divide the event into broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. Verify current YouTube behavior for your channel before relying on the platform archive; no long-stream archive should be treated as guaranteed.

Preflight the full loop before going public

  1. Make an unlisted test. Use representative motion, the actual audio track, the intended resolution and bitrate, and the real looping sequence.
  2. Watch from another device and network. Check framing, sound, buffering, playback quality, and the transition at the loop boundary.
  3. Check stream health. Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream-health indicators and diagnostic messages. YouTube’s stream health troubleshooting guidance explains its diagnostics.
  4. Test unattended failure cases. Confirm what happens when the source loops, the encoder briefly disconnects, the connection returns, or the computer restarts. Pay particular attention to whether auto-stop ends the event.
  5. Keep a local copy if preservation matters. A local recording provides a fallback if the live archive is incomplete or unavailable.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and playback problems

OBS reports dropped frames

Dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate. OBS describes the causes in its stream connection troubleshooting guide. Reduce the bitrate to a level your stable upload can sustain, and consider testing another ingest server or network path. OBS gives 75% of total upload as a starting point in its troubleshooting guidance; treat that as a rough diagnostic starting point, not a universal guarantee or a substitute for testing.

The stream buffers even though OBS connects

Lower the output resolution or frame rate, or reduce bitrate until the connection remains stable. Re-test while using the network conditions expected during the actual event. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and selecting quality your connection can support; its encoder settings guidance is the reference for its current codec-specific targets.

The archive is missing or viewers cannot rewind far enough

Check the broadcast duration first. YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours, while DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. For the next event, use shorter broadcasts and make a local recording instead of relying on a single uninterrupted event to preserve the full replay.

The stream ends after a short interruption

Review the event’s auto-stop behavior and test the actual disconnect-and-reconnect sequence before launch. If the broadcast ends when the encoder stops, use a workflow that allows you to review and restart the event as needed rather than assuming a brief interruption will be harmless.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the uploaded replay to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud rather than streaming from a live camera. StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; this is a vendor-described feature, not an uptime guarantee.
