For a typical 24/7 YouTube live stream, use RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR), a YouTube-supported video codec, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube does not prescribe a special format for 24/7 streams; reliability matters more than selecting the highest available quality.

Recommended settings for a continuous YouTube stream

YouTube’s published live-encoder recommendations are general settings, not a separate 24/7 preset. The encoder sends one incoming feed; YouTube transcodes it into output formats for viewers, so you do not need to create separate versions for different devices. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips are the relevant references.

Setting YouTube guidance Practical starting point
Ingestion protocol RTMP/RTMPS are supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use RTMPS for a typical non-HDR stream.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Choose a stable codec supported by your encoder and workflow. H.264 is a conservative compatibility choice.
Rate control CBR is recommended. Set the encoder to CBR rather than a variable bitrate mode.
Keyframes A 2-second interval is recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set keyframes to every 2 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps. Use 30 fps for ordinary low-motion scenes. Consider 60 fps when motion or detail benefits enough to justify the higher bitrate.
Audio AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; stereo recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz is a conventional choice.
Upload capacity YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and notes that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Allow headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, including any backup stream, and test at the times you expect to broadcast.

These recommendations come from YouTube Help; the accessed guidance does not state a publication year. They are published settings, not independently measured benchmarks.

Choose resolution and bitrate

YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are in Mbps and represent YouTube’s recommendations, not guaranteed minimum connection speeds.

Input resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
4K/2160p, 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
4K/2160p, 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps

720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For a typical stream, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point if the encoder and sustained upload can support it: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at that setting. For 1080p60, the respective recommendations rise to 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps. If a lower bitrate is necessary to keep the stream stable, reduce resolution or frame rate rather than running an unreliable feed at a setting your connection cannot maintain. YouTube’s table also includes minimum rates for 720p and below; consult the official settings page for the minimum corresponding to your selected codec.

RTMPS or HLS?

RTMPS is the straightforward choice for most non-HDR streams. YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it. HLS is not an automatic quality upgrade: it is useful for certain HDR workflows and codecs that RTMP does not support, but it has higher latency and more restrictive ingestion requirements.

When HLS may be appropriate

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) where the encoder supports that workflow. HLS may be an option when the needed HDR setup or codec is not supported over RTMP. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions require TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. HLS also disables YouTube’s “Ultra low-latency” option. Use it to meet a specific technical requirement, not merely because the stream is continuous.

Plan for 24/7 reliability

A continuous stream depends on more than its file or codec settings. YouTube’s guidance is to select a quality that can produce a reliable stream on the available internet connection, test under representative conditions, and monitor stream health.

  • Measure sustained upload, not just a brief peak. Test when the network is likely to be shared or busy. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom beyond the stream bandwidth; include a backup bitrate if you use a backup encoder.
  • Test the actual content. Run representative audio and motion through the chosen settings. Check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream health indicators before relying on it for a long broadcast.
  • Prepare recovery. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover. Confirm that you can recover from an encoder or network interruption instead of assuming a continuous feed will never disconnect.
  • Check what viewers receive. Verify the event on the channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and monitor audio and video quality. Check local archive files if you are recording a copy.
  • Protect against brief power interruptions. A UPS for dedicated streaming and network equipment can help during short power cuts. It does not prevent an internet outage, and runtime depends on the connected equipment and battery.

YouTube does not publish a special codec, container, or encoder profile specifically for streams lasting 24 hours or longer. The right choice is the stable quality your complete setup can sustain.

DIY encoder workflow and common fixes

  1. Set up the YouTube live event and obtain its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use the provided stream key and server URL in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event.
  2. Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS, a supported codec, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to your available upload. Set audio to a supported format such as AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  3. Start a test before committing to continuous operation. Check YouTube’s stream health, playback on the watch page, and audio/video quality. Test backup-encoder failover if available.
  4. Monitor and adjust. If the feed drops or quality degrades, reduce the bitrate or resolution until the connection has enough sustained capacity and headroom. Confirm the encoder is still sending and that the correct event and key are in use.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Upload capacity may be insufficient, shared, or interrupted. Test sustained capacity, reserve 20% headroom, reduce bitrate if needed, and test the network and encoder recovery path.
  • Video looks poor despite a high resolution: A high resolution cannot compensate for an unsuitable bitrate or unstable connection. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s guidance and your actual upload, and reduce resolution or frame rate if reliability suffers.
  • Encoder reports keyframe or rate-control problems: Check that rate control is CBR and the keyframe interval is 2 seconds, within YouTube’s 4-second maximum recommendation.
  • No audio or incorrect audio quality: Check that the encoder is sending an RTMP/RTMPS-compatible audio codec and that the intended input is selected; AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz is a common baseline.
  • HLS has excess latency or fails to ingest: HLS inherently has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. Verify the segment, playlist, HTTPS method, and byte-range requirements against YouTube’s HLS instructions, or use RTMPS if HLS is not needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

Copyright and monetization considerations

Format compliance does not establish that you have the rights to stream the content. Use videos and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s rules and the permissions attached to any third-party material. A technically stable stream does not itself guarantee monetization; eligibility and policy compliance are separate questions.
