OBS network-dropped frames usually mean your computer cannot deliver the encoded stream reliably to the platform’s ingest server at the bitrate you selected. First confirm that the OBS counter rising is Dropped Frames (Network); rendering lag and encoder overload have different causes and fixes. Then test the ingest route, reduce bitrate to a sustainable level with upload headroom, and eliminate local network variables. There is no single India-wide connection issue to assume: the relevant factors are your ISP’s route, Wi-Fi conditions, shared upload use, and the server you select.
Confirm which OBS counter is increasing
Check the OBS status bar or open View → Stats while the stream is running. OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Its connection troubleshooting guide says this is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Dropped Frames (Network): encoded video is not reaching the streaming server consistently. Follow the network steps below.
- Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to compose scenes, often because the GPU is overloaded. Simplify scenes or reduce output resolution or frame rate.
- Encoding Overload: the encoder cannot process frames fast enough. Reduce the work demanded by the output settings or scene sources.
A choppy stream is not automatically a network-dropped-frames problem. OBS documents rendering and encoding overload as separate performance issues: OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting. Also distinguish broadcaster delivery from viewer playback: OBS notes that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping network frames.
Save an OBS log before changing settings
A log captures the configuration and events around a session, making it more useful than a speed-test result alone when diagnosing intermittent failures.

- Reproduce the problem for a few minutes if practical, noting the time and whether the network-dropped-frames counter rises.
- In OBS, select Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File (or Upload Last Log File after a finished session). Keep the resulting link for comparison or support.
- Record the selected ingest server, bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any concurrent uploads on the connection.
Use a matched test when comparing changes: keep the content and settings stable, change one variable, then compare network-dropped frames over a similar period. A short test cannot rule out congestion that appears only at a particular hour.
Test a different ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and choose another available server for the platform, then run a comparable test. A geographically nearer server is not necessarily the most stable: different ingest servers may use different routes from your ISP. Compare sustained dropped-frame behavior, not just ping or the server’s map location. OBS recommends testing another server as part of its connection troubleshooting.
If you stream to a platform other than YouTube, use that platform’s current ingest-server and bitrate guidance; the YouTube-specific figures below are not universal.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
A speed test measures capacity under its own conditions. It does not prove that the same upload rate will remain stable to your selected ingest server throughout a long stream. OBS Project’s 2024 connection guide suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed; YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused as headroom. These are starting guidance figures, not guarantees. Shared uploads by other people or devices need to fit within that headroom too. OBS guidance · YouTube: Streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor YouTube, select a value from its current table for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are the published recommended H.264 video bitrates; they are examples, not mandatory settings. YouTube’s minimum and recommended ranges and its AV1 and H.265 values differ, so check the current table before applying a number.
| YouTube H.264 output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video figures; audio also uses bandwidth. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for live streaming for the current codec-specific table. Its guidance specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

- In OBS, open Settings → Output. If using Output Mode: Simple, adjust the video bitrate there; in Advanced, check the streaming encoder’s rate-control and bitrate fields.
- Lower bitrate in measured steps if network-dropped frames continue. If stability improves, keep the lower value or test a lower resolution or frame rate that preserves acceptable detail in your meditation visuals.
- For YouTube, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as recommended by its current encoder guidance. Keep the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings in your test notes.
Do not assume a nominally fast connection can sustain a high bitrate all day. Leave margin for variation and shared use; then judge the setting by actual stream behavior.
Remove Wi-Fi, VPN, and local network variables
Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi
If OBS is on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection without changing other settings. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi instability is suspected. A suitable Ethernet cable can help make this comparison, but it cannot fix ISP congestion, an ingest-route issue, or an overloaded encoder.

Inspect hardware, drivers, and IP settings
- Restart and check the modem and router if there are signs of local instability.
- Inspect the Ethernet cable, network adapter, and any switch or extender in the path when the problem changes with wired connectivity or hardware.
- Check that the network adapter driver is current, especially if failures began after a system or driver change.
- OBS documents TCP pacing and network optimizations as Windows-only options. Treat optional network controls as experiments, not guaranteed fixes; change one setting at a time and revert changes that do not help.
- If forcing IPv4 made no difference, return the IP-family setting to its default rather than keeping an unsupported workaround.
OBS also describes dynamic bitrate as a way to mitigate congestion by lowering video quality; it does not repair the underlying connection. Use it only if its quality trade-off is acceptable for your stream. The options and caveats are in OBS Project’s connection guide.
If network frames are fine, troubleshoot rendering or encoding
When the network-dropped-frames counter is not rising but rendering lag or encoder overload is, lowering the network bitrate may not address the cause. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance suggests reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes and sources. A 30 fps output generally requires less work than 60 fps, and a 4K source may be unnecessary when the output is smaller. Use the log and OBS statistics to establish a host-performance bottleneck before considering hardware changes.

A meditation stream usually does not need low latency for interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering, so choose a latency mode according to whether real-time interaction matters and observe the result rather than selecting the lowest-latency option by default. YouTube latency settings.
When to contact your ISP
If the problem persists after testing another ingest server, a sustainable bitrate, and a wired connection, ask your ISP to investigate possible congestion or routing instability. Send the support team specific evidence rather than only a speed-test screenshot:
- OBS log link and timestamps of the failures;
- the platform and ingest server selected;
- bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame rate during the tests;
- whether Ethernet improved the result compared with Wi-Fi;
- whether another ingest server changed the dropped-frame rate.
These checks can help distinguish a local Wi-Fi or equipment problem from an issue beyond your home network. They do not establish a nationwide Indian ISP problem; routing and congestion must be diagnosed at the affected location.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded meditation videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
